25.01.2022 We understand this is a very worrying time for some in our communities. We want to reassure you that Fire and Emergency NZ are continuing to respond to all emergencies. We have taken steps to reduce the exposure to our staff and added in some personal protective equipment for our crews to wear at an incident, both for their safety and yours. We have been and will continue to follow advice from the Ministry of Health - Manat Hauora. ... In the meantime folks look after yourselves and keep in touch with your neighbours or family members, especially if they are vulnerable. Keep washing your hands and dial 111 if you need us!

22.01.2022 It is International Firefighters' Day - how did you go on the quiz? I reckon I can answer this one no worries. https://www.stuff.co.nz//trivia-quiz-international-firefig

20.01.2022 Please avoid lighting any rubbish and garden waste fires during lockdown. Whilst this isolation period might be a good time to get odd jobs done, we ask that you please don’t light fires. It is likely to generate a 111 call from the public whether they are out of control or not. Hold off applying for a permit for an outdoor fire until the lockdown is over,

19.01.2022 Very disappointing,

19.01.2022 (Not from here, but well worth the read, and to take note while it's so cold,) We have some good news about yet another win for smoke alarms and a warning about power multi-boxes. We were turned out just before daybreak today with Titirangi brigade to a report of a house fire in Fawcett Road off Laingholm Drive. The occupants were awakened by one of their smoke alarms sounding with another detector joining in the chorus shortly afterwards. There was foul-smelling smoke in the... house so very wisely they evacuated and called us. The smoke had largely cleared when we arrived but the acrid smell was still very obvious. After quite a bit of searching, including using a heat-detecting thermal imagining camera, we found that a power multi box had shorted and starting burning. At this stage we don't know what caused it to fail in that way. but here are some general rules for using multi-boxes: Don’t overload the powerpoints. Purchase a multibox with a Spike or Surge cut-off protection if you can. Only one plug per powerpoint on the multibox, no double plugs. Don’t join one multibox to another multi box, to then to the powerpoint on the wall. (in series if you will) Ensure that furniture is not sitting on your powercords Switch off or unplug power cords when they are not in use We are pleased to report that there was no damage to the home.

17.01.2022 Wooohooooo we are at 500 likes, come on everyone, invite your friends,

17.01.2022 The Rangitikei, Manawatu and Palmerston North rural districts move to a restricted fire season as of 8am Wednesday 24 February. A restricted fire season means you may need to apply for a permit for an outdoor fire and follow the conditions listed on your fire permit. Go to www.checkitsalright.nz to apply. You can use your gas or charcoal barbecue, and have a hangi or umu, during a restricted fire season, but make sure to follow our safety tips on www.checkitsalright.nz.... Principal Rural Fire Officer Bradley Shanks says, ground conditions in the districts have changed enough now for us to need to move to restricted. Horowhenua rural district and all towns in the region remain in open fire season. A total fire ban remains for all beaches across all districts. Find out which fire season your area is in and to apply for a fire permit if required at www.checkitsalright.nz

16.01.2022 My father was fireman. He drove a big red truck. And when he'd go to work each day he'd say, "Mother wish me luck."... Then Dad would not come home again 'til sometime the next day. But what bothered me the most was the things some folks would say; "A fireman's life is easy, He eats and sleeps and plays. And sometimes he won’t fight a fire for days and days." When I first heard these words I was too young to understand. But I knew when people had trouble Dad was there to lend a hand. Then my father went to work one day and kissed us all goodbye. But little did we realizes that night we all would cry. My father lost his life that night when the floor gave way below. I'd wondered why he'd risk his life for someone he did not know. But now I truly realize the greatest gift a man can give is to lay his life upon the line so that someone else might live. So as we go from day to day and we pray to God above say a prayer for your local fireman. He may save the one's you love. Author: Jim Martinez Boise Fire, Retired Brotherhood of Fire

15.01.2022 Are you guilty of leaving doors open at night? The photo below shows the outward-facing door after a kitchen fire. The inward-facing door was completely destroyed. The level of protection your doors give you in a fire depends on their quality, age and fire-protection qualities, however even the lowest quality door will give you vital time in a fire, but ONLY if they are SHUT. Also make sure you have a Smoke Alarm in your room! Add closing doors to your nighttime routine - it could save your life!

11.01.2022 With the blessing of the family, we are now in a position to release the name of the Police officer who was fatally shot during an incident in Massey yesterday morning. He was Constable Matthew Dennis Hunt, aged 28 of Auckland. Constable Hunt started with Police as a member of Wing 312 on 30 October 2017. He spent the majority of his career working frontline at Orewa and Helensville Stations before recently moving to work in our Waitemata Road Policing Team based at Harbour... Bridge Station. Our Police family across New Zealand are mourning the tragic and senseless death of Constable Hunt and our priority remains on supporting his family at this tragic time. Along with this, we are also ensuring the welfare of all other Police staff who attended the incident as well as the other injured officer and injured member of the public. --- Statement from the Family of Constable Hunt: Matthew was raised on the Hibiscus Coast by his mother Diane, with his sister Eleanor. He attended Orewa College and it was his life-long dream to be a Police Officer. Before joining the New Zealand Police, he completed a BA in Criminology and worked at Auckland Prison as a Case Manager. He also spent time living in the United Kingdom before he returned to New Zealand to join Police. Matthew was a person of great integrity. His closest friends were like his brothers and sisters and they along with his family are absolutely heartbroken by what has happened. He was passionate about sport and his physical fitness and was thrilled to enjoy the recent Blues game at Eden Park with his mates. We ask that media please respect our privacy at this time and allow us the space to grieve the sudden loss of our son, brother and friend.

09.01.2022 Today we stand and remember the 185 lives lost. Some didn't call Christchurch home, that didn't matter to us. We took them in to our hearts and grieved for their loss. We lost family, friends and complete strangers that day and collectively as a region our hearts were broken. The nation and the world stood beside and grieved with us. ... Our fire fighters worked day and night to rescue those they could and recover those who had passed. They gave their everything to protect the people of Christchurch who needed their help. Many weren't sure how their own families had faired. The synchronized working of all Canterbury Emergency Services was a sight to behold, blue, green, black, red, the colour of uniform didnt matter. The International Search and Rescue teams who came to assist were beautiful souls dressed in overalls and a hard helmet. Their assistance and compassion was exceptional, their dignity and professionalism is truly inspiring. 9 years on and the landscape of the City may be different but the scars run deep and so to does our bond. So here we stand side by side silently reflecting on what was, what has been and what is to come. Kia Kaha Canterbury!

04.01.2022 With long weekend here, it may be time to get the BBQ out but before you do quickly check these few things: Make sure the BBQ is clean - get rid of any grease and fat build up as this can easily ignite Move your BBQ away from the house and anything else combustible - that way if something does go wrong it won't immediately catch anything else on fire.... Once you connect your gas cylinder to the BBQ check the connection is secure by pouring a little soapy solution over the valve. If any bubbles are created you may have a gas leak. Turn the valve off and replace the cylinder O-ring. For more tips check out our handy hints here: https://fireandemergency.nz/at-home/bbqs-and-gas-cylinders/

02.01.2022 ELECTRIC BLANKETS. We all love to be warm and toasty on these cooler nights, but please take on board some of these tips. Electric blanket fires can be devastating. Here are tips to help you stay warm and SAFE every winter. ... TEST electric blankets each winter with a certified electrician. NEVER sleep with an electric blanket on. ALWAYS turn electric blankets off before leaving the house. ROLL electric blankets to store. Do not fold. Remember if in doubt, throw it out!

01.01.2022 Keen to help our firefighters during lockdown? If you see one of these yellow fire hydrants outside your house, help us help you by clearing it of any grass, bush or rubbish that may be covering it. Every second counts when responding to an emergency. Please only do this if it is safe to do so and you are safe from any traffic and not at risk of breaking your bubble.... Thanks!
