21.01.2022 While it was a gruelling summer for many impacted by the Black Summer fires, it came on top of a relentless few years of battling the drought for Darren, his wife Julie, and fellow farmers. Darren and Julie lost their home, sheds and cattle farm to the bushfires in Bellangry on the NSW Mid North Coast. Darren was clear on one thing: I refuse to let it break me. I’m always positive, so the drought or the fires’ not going to take that away from me. The couple were overjoyed ...with the help and support they received from Vinnies Australia. They were buoyed by an emergency cash transfer, along with food and fuel vouchers. Darren said the support they continued to receive from Vinnies’ Client Support Officer, Donna Boyd, was absolutely amazing. 14.01.2022 Coming together in times of hardship is essential for recovery. Make sure you check in on your neighbours, family, friends and colleagues. In the words of bushfire survivor Sherrie, You can heal yourself, but theres no point in being healed if those around you are still broken. Thats why we all need to walk it together and at the end of it were all going to be healed.

His friend Andy Huk organised to get it reissued in acknowledgement of its significance. Its acts of kindness like these that get us through the tough times.

11.01.2022 Navigating life after the fires looks different for everyone and there is no single journey to recovery. Judith and Paul lost almost everything to the Black Summer bushfires. We have been self-sufficient on this property and we have lived that life for 50 years. Our whole lifestyle has been destroyed, not just the house, but all the sheds, all the tools, all the animals died in the fire. With help from the Australian Government, Habitat for Humanity and Australian Red Cro...ss Judith and Paul are now recovering. They said working with Habitat for Humanity was wonderful, especially after finding that most volunteers come from inner-city suburbs. They’re very warm and caring people, they are learning skills, some of them are learning skills on the job. Having a charity that can come on to a property that can help you do repairs, even if the people are not totally skilled, they are willing to learn, and they’re willing to give and that’s worth everything. Learn more about Habitat for Humanity’s bushfire recovery support at https://www.habitat.org.au/bushfirerecoveryprogram/ Read our Aussie community recovery stories at www.bushfirerecovery.gov.au/recovery-stories

10.01.2022 These smart cookies have one sweet recovery story to tell For 14 years, small business Snowy Mountains Cookies has been providing delicious treats to the region and its visitors. But this quickly changed after the Black Summer bushfires. The homes of its 20-30 staff were no-go zones, and the town was almost completely empty for the holiday season. Without its seasonal trade, the local economy took a big hit and morale went down.... The damage wasnt only financial, there was an emotional impact too. The business, like many others in the area, struggled to stay afloat. But owners Nolen and Daisy reached out for support, and got a $10,000 recovery grant and tax support from the Australian Government. The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also purchased their cookies to use at international events. Theyre now optimistic about the future. Its an important reminder to never give up during your bushfire recovery journey. Read more about their story in our newsletter (edition 9) at https://www.bushfirerecovery.gov.au/news/newsletter Please also remember that if youre not feeling like yourself, it can help to talk. 01.01.2022 Theres a buzz coming out of this small Aussie business after getting support from their community and the Australian Government. Di and Scott Richardson of HoneyBee Hives were hit hard by the Black Summer bushfires and had to close their beehives due to the impact of the smoke. After purchasing new queen bees for their farm, they were feeling uncertain about how much honey the bees would make after the fires. They came up with the idea of making some un-BEE-lievable home-...made beeswax balm products with natural ingredients from their 10 years worth of stockpiled beeswax. With the help of the Small Business Grant and advice from Business Connect and rural financial counsellors, they were able to take some of the sting out of the fires and turn their small business around. Di believes they are now better placed after the bushfires because of diversifying into beeswax products. If you are a small business or primary producer impacted by the Black Summer bushfires, you may be eligible for more help than you think! Please dont hesitate to send us a message or visit our website at www.bushfirerecovery.gov.au/small-business
