22.01.2022 Recently, Firesticks Alliance co-founder Victor Steffenson spent some time assisting with a cultural burn at the Banbai Rangers. Head ranger Tremane Patterson gives an insight into the burn process in this article from the @tenterfieldstar: "you know you have a good burn when the earth still feels cool to touch after the fire passes over, allowing creatures to survive under the leaf litter or giving them the opportunity to scurry away to unburnt areas." 16.01.2022 This NAIDOC week we wanted to reflect on the work of Yuin and Thunghutti man Adrian Webster from the Mudjingaalbaraga Firesticks Team, speaking about reading Country and how this indicates the right time to burn. Filmed at the National Indigenous Fire Workshop, 2018 held at Bundanon Trust on Yuin Country. "We want the fire and the Country to do what it needs to do. We don't decide when to put the fire in. It's not our decision. We just interpret and read the Country and when it needs it and it's asking for it, we'll put it in. At the same time, we're not going to run in and put it out, or put in control lines... The Country already has those measures in place." @verahong @craigbender

03.01.2022 Confused about the difference between backburning & good fire? Rural Fire Service Northern Tableland's Scott Keelan, who recently participated in our Tenterfield burn observed "You could actually pick up the ash after the fire went through, it was so cool. There was green grass left, there were still critters moving about..." After a similarly-successful cultural burn at Delungra, the Banbai rangers and RFS have three more cultural burns in the planning stages for the Glen In...nes area. Mr Keelan said such efforts have been happening quietly in the background for some time and are a good thing, with rangers and RFS volunteers standing shoulder-to-shoulder sharing information on tools and containment. "It's very valuable and I hope it continues." #goodfire #rightfire #indigenouslandmanagement #indigenous #firesticksalliance #firesticks #culturalfire #australianbushfires #culturalfire #culturalburning #culturalidentity #culturalpractice #culturallyconnected #livingculture #healthycommunities #healthylandscapes #resilientlandscapes #buildingcommunity #indigenousknowledge #indigenousled #Indigenous #Aboriginal #FirstNations See more

03.01.2022 Let's be clear. We don't believe that the answer lies merely in Indigenous participation. We believe it is grounded in Indigenous leadership, informed by tens of thousands of years of intimiate, local knowledge of country. An Indigenous-led National Cultural Fire Strategy is a key recommendation of the newly announced Australian Bushfire and Climate Plan. Firesticks CEO and Bundjalung man Oliver Costello says the strategy is needed to both reduce bureaucracy and embrace traditional knowledge to care for Country.
