24.01.2022 Why exercise for postural strength is an important component of exercise programs for the management of PTSD and anxiety.

24.01.2022 When chatting to my clients and class participants, I believe it is important to point out the emerging research data that links type 2 diabetes to brain health. I am an advocate for the brain so feel its time this data becomes more understandable for the general public. We discuss the physiology of insulin resistance and brain health during our Fiteracy workshops and try to present this in easy to understand language

24.01.2022 The idea that we need to eat small frequent meals across the day to rev up our metabolism and lose weight is simply ridiculous. Firstly, if you ate NOTHING fo...r a whole day, what do you think your body would use for fuel? It would most likely have to tap into its stored energy - glycogen (stored glucose) and body fat! If the goal of weight loss IS to tap into stored energy, then eating LESS frequently is more logical. From a physiological perspective, small frequent high-carb meals can cause insulin levels to be high ALL day in insulin resistant individuals - that’s because it takes a very long time to clear insulin after each meal in someone who is making too much. Insulin is the fat storage hormone, so if you’re insulin levels are always high - it doesn’t matter what kind of Calorie deficit you’ve calculated your small and unsatisfying meals to fit within, you will struggle to lose weight. On the flip side, build your meals with plenty of delicious real food fats and proteins, and give your body ample time to rest and digest after eating... your insulin levels won’t rise so high in the first place, and a reduced meal frequency will help them come down between meals and allow you to burn stored energy #weightloss See more

22.01.2022 Free Online Workshop PTSD, Depression and Anxiety and role of exercise How to Use Free Online Apps to Get Started with Exercise And Stay Motivated

19.01.2022 How can we assist the general public and also other health professionals with learning new health concepts? I grew up listening to my Dad Professor Brian Cambourne talking to other teachers about how they could assist both children and parents with learning how to read. The human brain does not switch learning processes to learn various concepts so my father's principles of learning and engagement can be applied to learning health concepts also.... If you are chatting with your mentee, family or even one of your patients, check if you are applying the principles of engagement below. By applying these engagement principles, you are increasing the likelihood that your "learner" is feeling safe with what you are teaching them

16.01.2022 Type 2 diabetes has many complications and there is emerging evidence regarding the neurological effects of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Its important to work on your metabolic health NOW through a combination of exercises and lifestyle modifications. The neurological effects which may lead to Alzheimers start many years before the symptoms show. If you are in your 30s or 40s , then its time to start managing your movement and diet to protect your brain for futur...e years. Any Berger's Book the Alzheimers Antidote is a great place to start . 13.01.2022 Our latest Fiteracy Workshop we discussed the importance of understanding some of the symptoms that people experiencing the effects of PTSD may live with. Recognising these symptoms can assist with planning exercise and lifestyle programs for people with PTSD. Is your initial consult environment quiet, inviting and calming?... Are handouts easy to follow, with clear easy "next step" instructions? Is a 30 minute exercise session such as walking independently too much time for a starting point for clients new to exercise? Is it difficult for your client to leave their house on their own? Can you assist with setting up home based exercises using apps and smart phone, smart tv technology? Is your client comfortable in small groups or do social experiences become overwhelming for clients who are not ready for socialising with people they do not know? What factors need to be considered when referring clients with PTSD to gyms and public exercise programs? Can having set fitness goals too early into a new program, create fear or failure and increased pressure for clients with complex PTSD? There is no wrong or right way to assist people starting a new exercise and lifestyle program, however, a low anxiety approach to prescribing exercise may be the most comfortable place to start from and to continually aim for. Regards Brodie Cambourne Exercise Physiologist

07.01.2022 The Brain, Metabolic Health and why it's important to shift focus from weight loss to understanding your metabolic health. Dysfunctional metabolic health ( type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance hyperimsulnaemia) have been linked to Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimers Disease. This means that some cognitive disorders may be linked to metabolic health symptoms and these symptoms may go unnoticed for many years before the cognitive symptoms become noticeable.... The brain demands 20% of your total energy and is not immune to metabolic dysfunction. Your brain is fueled by the same fuel system your other organs and body is fueled by. If your liver or pancreas is struggling with your current diet and lifestyle, it is highly likely that so is your brain. You just won't know for 10 or 15 years Save your brain, review your lifestyle To learn more about metabolic health and our health literacy work shops , join in one our Fiteracy Workshops at www.fiteracy.com.au

05.01.2022 The Yellow Spikes Diagram. I use this diagram with my Brainfit participants to help explain the role insulin plays in controlling our blood sugar. The diagram outlines the higher blood sugar rises as a result of foods high in carbohydrate. Insulin is required to help move this sugar into our cells to be converted to energy. ... Exercise helps Insulin to be more effective at this role ( insulin sensitivity) However, its equally important to know that the more you need to use your Insulin, the harder your pancreas works to keep producing insulin.
