25.01.2022 So what is Lifestyle Medicine? Essentially it is a health and healing modality that relies on the intrinsic ability that our bodies were designed with to foster and promote optimal levels of health and happiness holistically - meaning that we are not body, mind and spirit separately, but rather each dimension of our lives can build up or tear down the others. Keep watching this space as we get closer to launching my new business - THRIVE: Wellness Designed!

25.01.2022 Is Better Health on Your New Year Resolution list? Did you know that in more than 100 studies published by scientists at UCLA and other leading universities, healthy lifestyle changes incorporating both diet and exercise have been found to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, level out blood sugar, reverse the pre-diabetic condition known as metabolic syndrome, relieve angina (chest pain from heart disease), ameliorate chronic inflammation, shed weight, and more. Plus, all these benefits occur within two to three weeks.

23.01.2022 ENERGY DRINKS... Are they good for you? Findings from recent research conducted on US Air force personnel. Energy Drinks and Health | Blood Pressure... After consuming the energy drink, the subjects’ blood pressure remained elevated six hours longer than after swallowing the control drink. Energy Drinks and Health | Heart Function Even more significant was the effect of the energy drink on heart function, namely, the QT interval. Essentially, the QT interval is the amount of time it takes for the ventricles in the heart’s lower chambers to repolarize, or prepare, to generate another heartbeat. Any drug with a 6 millisecond or greater QT response must have a label warning. After swallowing the energy drink, the QT response of the participants was 10 milliseconds. It can cause the heart to beat abnormally. The resulting arrhythmia can be life-threatening, explained Dr. Fletcher in a news release from the American Heart Association. Energy Drinks and Healthy Weight 473ml of Red Bull, for example, tallies up about 220 calories. That’s a big problem if you’re trying to lose weight because calories in drinks whether those calories come from sodas or fruit juices or energy drinks do not register in our brain’s satiety centers. Put simply, we’re just as hungry for our next meal whether we’ve drunk that energy drink or not. One Drink These were the consequences of one energy drink. Many energy drinkers chug down two to three daily one in the morning to wake up, one to ward off the mid-afternoon slump, and a third to work and play into the night. With the findings of this study, it should be much less mysterious why energy drinking can lead to ED visits and death.

21.01.2022 The Low Down on Prostate Cancer

19.01.2022 Good for you, Good for the planet! A recent New England Journal of Medicine study found that about one in three people were either overweight or obese. It is commonly now understood that excess bodyfat and dietary fat are major contributors to Type 2 Diabetes. A recent publication of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that given the same caloric intake those participants on a vegetarian diet lost significantly more weight and percentage of bodyfat than those on a non-vegetarian diet. So to tackle our global epidemic could be as simple as how and what we eat! Considering also that it takes less resources to produce food for a plant based diet this could be the idealised Win-Win that many are looking for. For tips on how to go plant based feel free to message me.

10.01.2022 THE BEST AND HEALTHIEST FOODS FOR WEIGHT LOSS Part #1 An Unhealthy Approach To Weight Loss Counting calories and focusing our efforts on eating smaller portions of calorie-dense foods usually does not work long-term. Calorie-dense foods are foods that pack a lot of calories into just a few bites, like nuts, potato chips, candy bars, energy bars, burgers, croissants, pizza, donuts, muffins, cookies, and anything that’s oily, from olives to regular salad dressing.... Diet Bars for Weight Loss Most diet bars pack a lot of calories into a very small package (three bites and the bar’s gone), which means they do little for satiety and can lead to binging. What they’re lacking, quite simply, is satiety. Best and Healthiest Foods For Weight Loss The best and healthiest way to lose weight without fighting chronic hungry is to eat foods that provide more satiety for every calorie consumed. What Is Satiety? Satiety is the flip side of hunger. It’s getting out of hunger. But even more importantly, satiety is how long you stay full. The longer it sticks to your ribs, the more satiety that meal provided. Meals that provide the highest satiety for the fewest calories will aid weight loss and also long-term weight control because they do not force you to live with chronic hunger. The Best and Healthiest Foods For Weight Loss Are Foods That Deliver More Satiety Per Calorie Berries & Oatmeal are the healthiest foods for weight loss Berries and whole grains combine two of the best foods for weight loss. Research has shown that when you get more satiety per calorie, you get full without going overboard on calories. For the most part, foods with a lot of satiety per calorie are: Naturally rich in fiber Naturally high in water Naturally low in calorie density (which means that your calorie intake, per bite, is low). Stay tuned for Part #2 soon. Credit: Dr. Jay Kenney, PhD, RD, FACN, Nutrition Research Specialist at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, Florida

10.01.2022 THE BEST AND HEALTHIEST FOODS FOR WEIGHT LOSS #3 Don’t drink your calories. Fresh fruit is one of the healthiest foods to lose weight. (Check the infographic care of the Pritikin Longevity Centre.)... You do not compensate for the calories you drink by eating less food. In other words, if you drink a can of coke (140 calories) before or with a meal, you’re unlikely to compensate by eating 140 fewer calories of food. Research has found, in fact, that sugar in a solid form (jelly beans) provides more satiety for a given calorie level than when it’s dissolved in water (coke). Steer clear of any beverage with calories, everything from soft drinks to energy drinks to frappaccinos to fruit juices. Liquid calories, no matter their source, will not curb your appetite as well as solid foods. So increase your intake of foods rich in water, particularly: Fruits & Vegetables Rather than drinking fruit juice, eat the whole fruit. Science has shown that fruit juices promote excessive calorie intake just as sweet teas, sports drinks, and soft drinks do. So peel an orange. Finish off a big crisp apple. Snack on carrots. These whole foods are not only low in calorie density, they also tend to make you feel satisfied longer than fruit juices, vegetable juices, or any sugar-sweetened drink.

08.01.2022 THE BEST AND HEALTHIEST FOODS FOR WEIGHT LOSS #2 Reduce the calorie density of the foods you eat by reducing 2 main types of foods. Dry foods, such as cold cereals, dried fruits, breads, muffins, snack foods like pretzels and even so-called healthy snacks like veggie chips and dried green beans. They all pack a lot of calories into every bite you swallow. Fatty foods (and we all know what they are) foods like oils, butter, margarine, cream, ice cream, cheeses, nuts, regul...ar salad dressings, and fatty meat like ground beef. Especially damaging, very often, are foods that are fatty and dry, like croissants, donuts, scones, pastries, chocolate bars, hamburgers, French fries, cookies, energy bars, granola cereals, cheesy breads, and potato chips. Yes, the majority of just about everything on display in grab and go places like 7/11 convenience stores, petrol stations, and vending machines. Because dry and/or fatty foods jam so many calories into each bite, it’s easy real easy to go overboard on waist-expanding calories before you begin to feel any sense of fullness.

01.01.2022 Have you heard that eating coconut oil will help you lose the belly fat? If you have, I'd like to ask you if you've tried it for yourself? What results did you get? While there are studies that show that eating 2 tablespoons of coconut oil per day, every day, leads to a decrease in waist circumference many of them don't have a control group to compare against. Many studies show that simply by being intentional as compared with being unintentional gets you closer to your goal. Stands to reason really. I'm not saying don't use coconut oil, I am saying simply swapping fats/oils for coconut oil won't by itself won't realise a dramatic reduction in belly fat. Limiting your total fat consumption will, as will eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.
