11.01.2022 Getting to know your instructor: Paula Layton So Paula, youve been doing RPM for a while now; whats so good about RPM? "Its such a great high cardio workout ...but with zero impact on the body. Its also amazing because everyone can choose their own intensity." Do you still remember your first class? "Yes I do! I went to Launceston to try it out and it was harder than I expected! I had a sore butt afterwards but really enjoyed it, and thought the concept of a cycle class was great!" What is your favourite thing about RPM? "The music, along with the group environment of the workout." What is your favourite track? "I love a big mountain climb! Two that stand out in my mind are Fading Like a Flower and Black Velvet." Do you have any tips for people who are just starting out with RPM? "Start with half a class. Go at your own pace and dont panic if you cant stand for all the hills. Dont forget to bring water and a towel, and make the most of having some help getting set up. You can expect to have sore seat bones after the first couple of goes, but give it 4 to 5 goes to really get the hang of it all." Thank you for inspiring us all, and keep up the great work!

02.01.2022 Did someone say "Go fast"? But how do we do that safely and effectively? Here are some tips: 1. Get the resistance right - too much and you wont be a...ble to get the speed and therefore miss out on the cardio benefit; not enough and theres not enough tension to connect you to the bike or the beat. Use lots of little adjustments rather than assuming the first turn you take is the correct one and dont be afraid to add a little more or a little less along the way. 2. Focus on the feet - allow the toes to tip just a little and concentrate on small, tight circles. 3. Brace your core - make your hips a stable platform which keeps you literally seated into the saddle. 4. Relax your upper body - relax your neck and shoulders and make sure you have a little bend in your elbows. This helps you to use your core more effectively and focuses the energy use into the legs where its needed. 5. Find the lift - pushing down on the pedals is very natural, but you will find a huge difference to your pedal speed if you can focus on lifting the knees up. This will also help you to stay solid in the saddle, pulling the knees and elbows inwards to your core. 6. Breathe! The more you control your breathing, the more effective your pedalling will be and the quicker your recovery will be. It also ensures your muscles are getting maximum oxygen supply which will boost your endurance, particularly in longer efforts. 7. Focus - I cant stress enough how much difference a clear mind makes to speed efforts, particularly the long ones. Your mind will tend to want to tell you lies, so clearly focusing on the beat of the music and your breathing will help. Also combat the lies with good questions - instead of "I dont know if I can make it", ask yourself "I wonder just how long I can hold on?". I mean, we could just ride slow but that would be boring, right?
