25.01.2022 More sharing from Aboriginal Culture Week (Banba-Ban-Balya): Some sharing from Mrs Keizer's Year 7 students who celebrated Indigenous Culture in a variety of ways this week: * Students looked at Dreaming stories and unpacked the themes and linked them to our reading strategies.... * They studied different Indigenous people Bennelong, Eddie Mabo, Vincent Lingiari, Cathy Freeman and David Unaipon. They will now choose one of these to write an information report on. * Stolen Girl students were introduced to the topic of The Stolen Generation by listening to the story and completing different activities each day. * Students studied 8 different ways of Aboriginal learning, comparing them to the ways that we learn. * Art work a mural was created where each student had a piece which was joined together at the end. They did poppy artwork for Remembrance Day. Their final piece was a mixed media piece of art inspired by the narrative ‘Welcome to Country’ by Aunty Joy Murphy and Lisa Kennedy. * Finally our session with Tamaru. Mrs Keizer had her face painted (a sign of respect). Tamaru stressed to all the students to be respectful to all teachers! See more

25.01.2022 . A lot of warnings have been issued for children to stay off social media, specifically Tik Tok, d...ue to a graphic self harm video that’s circulating. While we do recommend that parents monitor their children or keep them off the platform, it's a band-aid solution for a long-term issue due to the fact that distressing videos constantly circulate online. Instead we would like to encourage all parents and guardians to -: 1 . Understand that they will most likely use it, whether you understand the appeal or not. Ask them what apps they use, find out why they like those apps. Start a dialogue so you can start understanding why it’s important to them. The more you understand about it, the more you can stay across it. 2 . If you know what apps they’re using, help them make their profile as secure as possible, whether it’s TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitch or Reddit (the list is endless). You can do this with the help of this eSafety Commissioner guide: www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide 3 . Be open and willing to listen. Make them aware of Kids Helpline Official (1800 55 1800), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), headspace (headspace.org.au) and Lifeline (13 11 14) so they know they have a place to contact if they don’t feel comfortable approaching you. 4 . Kids often create a social media profile that they make visible to you, but keep their actual profile under a fake name hidden from you. Again, this is why we encourage you to talk to your child openly and honestly. 5 . If your child watches YouTube videos, please be aware there's no guarantee that this content will be safe for kids. People can easily edit distressing videos for kids that slip through the filters. If you can't monitor your child on YouTube then let them watch Netflix kids instead as it has stronger filters. SBS and ABC iview are both free alternatives for children’s online content. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner is a great resource for parents, guardians and kids: www.esafety.gov.au

14.01.2022 **3 SPOTS AVAILABLE WITH THE GROUP STARTING THIS SEPTEMBER 5TH** Does your 7 to 10 year old child struggle with feeling frustrated more often than average? Do t...hey struggle to manage their disappointment or act co-operatively when they are angry? Would you like them to learn strategies to manage frustration constructively and to feel more co-operative? If so, we may be able to help. We have a FREE 4 week Saturday morning group for children and parents/caregivers to increase the knowledge kids have about anger and develop skills to manage their reactions when they feel disappointed, frustrated or angry. The group will be run by a clinical child psychologist for up to 6 kids and their parent/caregiver. It involves watching short animated videos, some group discussion and then activities for you and your child to complete together. In addition there will be approximately 40 minutes of practice (can be 4 x 10 minutes) between session activities to practice the skills learnt. The group will be run at our Wayville Office (3/16 Bartley Crescent, Wayville). We have a group starting in August and another one starting in September. If this sounds like something you are keen to do, please email Amy at [email protected] and we can answer any questions or book you in. This group is completely FREE to attend, but please note, in order for you to get the most out of this program, and because we are evaluating this group to see how well it works, it is essential you can attend all FOUR sessions for the ENTIRE time. If you are not able to commit to all of the sessions or the in between group activities then talk with us about other services that may be of help to you and your child. See more

11.01.2022 Cool Talk Does your child get frustrated easily and lash out (verbally or physically) impulsively? Children with big feelings and easily triggered frustratio...n often need helping knowing how to express their frustration constructively using sentences. We need to help them to create cool sentences which help them calmly and assertively say how they feel without acting angrily. On Calm Kid Central there is a video and activity sheet for children to teach them about this idea. While you are there, you can also ask our panel of child psychologists questions about your child’s management of frustration. Don’t forget Adelaide families with a health care card have been funded to get free access for 12 months https://www.calmkidcentral.com

07.01.2022 Flagstaff Hill Primary School would like to acknowledge the work of all of our school volunteers this year, particularly given the difficulties presented by the COVID pandemic. Thank you. We really appreciate all of your support. This year’s Volunteering Award for Outstanding Service was presented to Narelle Hodgson, in acknowledgement of her significant contribution to our school. Narelle has been a parent of daughters at our school for more than ten years and was a studen...t here herself. She is our Governing Council Chairperson and is passionately supportive of students, staff and the wider school community. In addition you can often see Narelle helping out in the canteen or coaching a sporting team. It would be impossible to list all of the ways that Narelle has volunteered at our school, suffice to say, she might as well be on staff!! Thank you Narelle.
