25.01.2022 Women Only Yoga at 4.15pm today Wednesday 30/9. In Women Only Yoga, we deal with the unspeakable stuff that us women sometimes talk about in quieter tones. But most of the time, it’s too embarrassing or messy even for private one-to-one conversations. As women, we therefore all miss out on getting a bunch of solutions to many challenges that cause us pain, or deprive us of a more wonderful life. Among other things, I’m talking about the challenges of continence, menstruation,...Continue reading

23.01.2022 We all come to a practice with a lens on. The beauty of using props is that you get the chance to stay longer, get steadier, and get mentally quieter ... so you can see what sort of a lens you have on. We all come to a practice with a lens on. It might be that in every pose you are engaged in thinking "I like this pose, or I dislike this pose, or you might be thinking I am really good at this pose or I am absolutely hopeless at this pose. Whatever the lens, it colours the ...way you see yourself. It is a filter that cuts out the light, and narrows your perception. Try to see what lens you have on. Being able to see the lens that colors your perception at any point in time is the start of the journey towards freedom and happiness. These photos were taken in today’s Advanced Class. Richard taught the class and led us through a sequence that used props, and gave us therefore the time to reflect on what lens we had come to the practice with, as well as to watch the lens shift. 22.01.2022 Angie Sublime is an NT music legend. You probably know her from around the studio and far beyond. Here's her story exactly as she told it to us.

21.01.2022 As soon as I look at someone, I can often identify how to address an issue that has been bothering them for years. One of the good things about getting older is that I can rely on a huge amount of yoga experience, and decades of building my yoga knowledge. I’m simply using what we know about how energy flows around the body, and identifying where some blockages may be. With a quick chat, and sometimes a few questions, I can quickly use such skills to help people either solve ...a problem, or get started with some yoga exercises and postures to address the problem, or both. These sorts of quick chats often happen before or after a class, or on a quick call. My mobile is 0448 11 22 51. Where I think it will help, either myself or our customer service team can then help you join some of our online or in-studio classes, or specialist classes (such as Backcare, Women’s Only, or Restorative). As you probably know, our class package deals are very low-cost ways to address issues, plus get you fitter and stronger. Yoga classes, online, in-studio, or playback, can very often fix a wide range of long-term problems, and change your life, or the life of someone you love. If you can only attend online yoga classes at Flametree, here are some good reasons why online is a very effective way to do yoga. https://flametreeyogastudio.com.au//choosing-a-yoga-studio/ [ This diagram from the late Dr Shah, and his legend lists, explains how this particular pose worksespecially on extending the joints in blue circles, and the pelvic area. Notice how the pose works on the fat in the legs... as shown by the yellow lines ].

20.01.2022 I used yoga to stop all my period issues, including pre-menstrual tension. It's very likely that you can too. Check out these easy poses for each time of the month. You'll find it even easier to get started with these poses if you do our beginner course, online or in-studio. Here are the free sequences of yoga poses for each time of the month, plus information about the beginner course. https://flametreeyogastudio.com.au//menstruation-home-yog/

17.01.2022 Wow. It has been hot. Time to use props to help shift energy. Try using ropes, chairs and bolsters to help open your hips and shift that feeling of sluggishness in the body and mind. These photos were taken during the Wednesday morning Advanced class.

14.01.2022 The storms are wonderful. The cool weather so welcome . .... but the noise of the frogs Here are a few poses that will help you settle and tune out their croaking...

14.01.2022 As I check students into their online classes, it's always amusing to see the weather they're facing. Often, I'm in bare feet and light cottons or my favourite bamboo tops, or there's a thunder storm brewing from the heat. Meanwhile, they come to their online class in ugg boots and heavy woolens. Last night, a student from country Victoria, Australia, sent me this from right outside where she practices. I still love the view she and her dog have... with or without snow! Would... love to see some pics of your home studio, or its view? 14.01.2022 When I (Chris) skip daily breath meditation, I notice that I am short tempered, less relaxed and more judgemental! I’m also less accepting of myself and of others, and generally feel out of sorts. On the other hand, when I do breath meditation, I find I can settle my mind. Breath meditation lets the thinking and planning part of my brain slow down and rejuvenate. I find I become present in the moment, alert and calm. It`s like coming home to myself. I’m not engaged in going ...Continue reading

13.01.2022 What has posture got to do with pelvic health and general well being? It turns out that how you stand and sit has a huge impact on the flow of blood into the pelvic area. And the impact of poor posture affects not just the health of your organs but places great strain on ligaments around the hips, and thereby contributing to hip and back pain. There are of course further consequences of poor posture like constipation, menstrual pain, and experiencing pain during intimate mome...nts with your partner. This week in the Women Only classes we will continue to explore standing and sitting postures in order to become more conscious of the affects of posture on pelvic health and general well being. Women Only classes for non-beginners - Tuesday 7.30-8.45pm. Women Only Beginners & Non Beginners - Wednesday 4.00- 5.00pm Buy a pass, and / or reserve your class via https://flametreeyogastudio.com.au

12.01.2022 I thought that a good run, or game of sport, meant that I had worked out. What did it matter if I (Sam) couldn’t touch my toes? Even after trying to stretch, did it matter if my hamstrings were still really tight? No matter how damn hard I tried, I couldn’t bend forward without feeling my concrete hamstrings, and that was that. Then I found out that stiffness was the very clear source of my lower back pain. 11.01.2022 Everyone who watches Richard’s Youth Yoga class agrees he has a unique talent with kids. The young people enjoy themselves, get well exercised, learn yoga skills, and get all the mental and other benefits of yoga. Richard keeps his cool and tames the lions with a gentle mix of quietly spoken authority. Part of the reason he commands the respect of the class is that he can do gob-smacking yoga poses that all of the class also want to master. In their mind, adults are not mea...nt to be able to do the contortions that Richard does! Richard has taught high quality yoga for over 20 years, and has three of his own children. He also holds a Working With Children clearance for the NT (Ochre Card). If you or a loved one has a young person from 8-15, consider Flametree’s weekly Youth Yoga class, at Flametree Yoga’s Woolner studio (just off the Tiger Brennan). Flametree is Darwin’s most well-known yoga studio, owned and managed by highly respected Senior Teacher, Chris Lalor. Youth Yoga classes are $10 a class, and we accept Sports Vouchers. Parents or carers can stay and watch, or drop off and pick up. Try it for a young person you love. You’ll be delighted with the outcome, and the young person will love it. They can start anytime over the next two weeks. For best results, start now. Stop at any time, & there’s a money back guarantee in the first week. Reserve the class now as the class size is limited so as to maximise outcomes, and for social distance. It’s the best Youth Yoga deal and teaching in Darwin, and it’s proven for fun, behaviour, and performance. The Youth Yoga class is at 3.30-4.30pm Thursday, Darwin time, in the upstairs studio at 19 Bishop Street Woolner. To avoid disappointment, it’s best to reserve a spot. Just open a free account at this link, and then reserve the Thursday class. At the studio, you then pay $10 a class by EFTPOS or cash before the class starts. Please arrive around 3.15pm for the 3.30 start. Reserve the class here: https://flametreeroom1.punchpass.com/ If you wish, you can see more about Flametree Yoga, or reach customer service, via our main website: https://flametreeyogastudio.com.au/ The photos are of young students taught by Richard, and are used with their encouragement and consent. Their grandmother is also a student at Flametree.

11.01.2022 When I started yoga, I was shocked by something entirely different from what I expected. And it had nothing to do with my uncoordinated, inflexible body! By the time I started yoga I was 40 years old. I was of course unfit, and I didn't go too far out of my comfort zone. As a kid I grew up in the country and did all sorts of crazy, daredevil things that kids do. I also have the odd scar and broken bones from when things went wrong. But when I became an adult, all that risk ta...Continue reading

11.01.2022 It was a shock when I first meet anger in a yoga room. I remember leaving a class feeling so angry and wondering what on earth had brought that on. I was feeling fine before the class, but then something we did in the class just triggered feelings of anger that took me by surprise. I realise it was twists. At first it was very confronting. It was because I felt so blocked when I practised twists. What emotions have you experienced as you practise any particular type of pose? ...Continue reading

10.01.2022 Here's a free guide on how to use easy yoga poses to reduce or stop menopause symptoms. They worked 100% for me (Chris). Use the drawings to see how to do them. https://flametreeyogastudio.com.au//menopause-home-yoga-p/

10.01.2022 I wasn’t ready to be upside down in a room with strangers! But, let’s go back a step or two. In my long ago past, I was an elite athlete. And, I still consider myself athletic. A long time ago, I completed a degree in physical education and consider myself knowledgeable when it comes to the human body and its possibilities. But, I resisted yoga’s call, even though I personally knew Chris, the certified Senior Teacher at Flametree Yoga. As I got older and less flexible, my res...istance may have been more about fear of failure, than the idea that yoga was a luxury I didn’t need. Whatever reason, I continued to think that I was beyond yoga. But I did agree with Chris that there were great benefits to be had for some. I reckoned I was not part of that some! MY FIRST BEGINNER YOGA AT THE FLAMETREE STUDIO Time past, as well as many conversations with Chris. And then, one Saturday morning, some time ago, I turned up at Chris’s yoga studio. I’d succumbed to the dark side, and although I’m not going to say I’m hooked, I certainly feel that I need yoga far more than yoga needs me. Chris had told me about the props that are used in Iyengar yoga, and I’d always thought they were a good idea. But, now, I cannot imagine yoga without them. I once thought they were a crutch for those not capable of completing a move. I was wrong. NOW I DO YOGA FOR BEGINNERS AT HOME, AND IN MY TRAVELS Without the props, my old and stiff body would distort and curl in an attempt to reach the unreachable. With the appropriate prop, I can maintain the correct yoga posture while moving along the continuum of completeness. The prop is not a crutch. It is a support, guide and tool that helps me stretch toward completeness. I now sit at my computer with my back straight and my shoulders relaxed, and I wonder what happens in other yoga studios. I wonder what the body does when it cannot reach the desired position. Does it distort or does it hang suspended somewhere between the beginning and end? I confess! I am a yoga convert, not a flag flying, card holding proselytiser of yoga. But I am a believer in the benefits, and I do believe that the block, the belt, the bolster, the shoulder mats, and the chair will assist my body to achieve the range of movement that it ought to be capable of. See more of Gary’s story, or the options to give yoga a try: https://flametreeyogastudio.com.au//yoga-for-beginners-at/

09.01.2022 In the last few months, an experienced yoga student joined our classes for the first time. This student was very flexible, and had a lifetime of impressive physical activity. Nevertheless, I (Chris) was pleased to see how regular attendance at Flametree’s classes still built her strength. Obviously, I’m not talking about the bulging muscle idea of strength. But I do mean toned muscle that is more than mere connective tissue! Adequate muscle helps us all do a better job of ef...fective and powerful living. It also reminded me that strength disappears quickly when you stop activities like yoga. "...Within two weeks you'll probably start to show a 7-10 per cent loss in strength levels," a fitness specialist, Dr Boutagy said (in a recent ABC article]. He continued: "...You'll lose at least 70 per cent of what you've built through exercise after about three months." So the simple message for all of us is that we use it or lose it. (It applies to your brain too, but I’ll talk about that another time). This Xmas, please don’t go backwards. Keep up your yoga, or start yoga. Flametree has a good selection of online, in-studio and playback classes running right through the Xmas / New Year period. The Xmas timetable starts with a FREE online class at 8am on Xmas Eve, with all teachers there for some fun and exercise. The full Xmas timetable, starting from Thursday 24/12, is at this link, including workshops. https://flametreeyogastudio.com.au/christmas-timetable/ All passes and reservation processes apply in the normal ways. There’s plenty of options for doing whatever amount of yoga you regularly do. Even if you are travelling, try some online classes, using your phone, ipad, or PC. See you on Zoom!

08.01.2022 Yesterday, I watched the 2017 doco called "Heal". It takes us on a scientific and spiritual journey where we discover that our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions have a huge impact on our health and ability to heal. What's the impact of looking for the worst, versus looking for the best? The latest science reveals that we are not victims of unchangeable genes, nor should we buy into a scary prognosis. It's an interesting discussion of the emerging field of "energy medicine". Th...e fact is we have more control over our health and life than we have been taught to believe. This film will empower you with a new understanding of the miraculous nature of the human body and the extraordinary healer within us all. HEAL not only taps into the brilliant minds of leading scientists and spiritual teachers, but follows three people on actual high stakes healing journeys. Healing can be extremely complex and deeply personal, but it can also happen spontaneously in a moment. Through these inspiring and emotional stories we find out what works, what doesn't, and why. The movie can be rented on YouTube movies. Trailer is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdNWn6BwU8s
