05.01.2022 FLEMING'S GARAGE Jack Fleming established his business in 1933 in Fitzroy Street as a Garage and General Engineering Works. They were also an agency for Malver...n Star & GEW Bicycles, later adding an agency for Ford Motor Company. During wartime, work included fitting gas producers to cream trucks and they also operated a taxi service. Petrol pumps (that held rationed petrol from various places) were manually operated from underground tanks that had been dug by hand. When Jack died in 1966, his son Ray continued with the garage. In 1963 another son Barry had started the transport operation. The original facade still fronts the workshop that had been extended in 1946 and again in 1981. After 86 years the business is still operated by members of the Fleming family. See more
