24.01.2022 Thanks so much to those of you who have already offered to help out with the Flemington Association. We often highlight how we can trace our origins back to the early 1880's when the Flemington & Kensington Ratepayers Association was formed. Here are a bunch of Flem Ken locals on our 1897 annual picnic. One rationale for keeping the Association is that it would be a shame to give up now given the efforts of all those before us!

24.01.2022 Debney’s Park today. Expecting more fog tomorrow morning.

23.01.2022 Today's Age includes an article on exams starting next week for Year 12 students, including Flemington local Haniyah Abdou Said, and how Covid-19 year has impacted on this year's studies. We wish Haniyah and the other students in Year 12 at Mount Alexander College and Flemington students studying elsewhere all the best with their exams over the next few weeks.

23.01.2022 Council is looking for feedback - and a name - for the proposed landscaping on the intersection of Mount Alexander Rd and Wellington St. Any ideas?

22.01.2022 Every year our heritage page asks if it's possible to have an Open House event in Flemington. With the event going online, this year might have been perfect as we could have explored some of our little gems on Wellington St without the crowds. This weekend you can see and hear about future projects in Kensington, including 15 Thompson St & 393 Macaulay Rd. If you haven’t been in recent years, you can also explore old favourite, Kensington Town Hall, from the comfort of your couch!

22.01.2022 All of us are invited! Who has already been to sample the masala dosa, murtabak and other Malaysian Indian delights on offer at Racecourse Road’s newest restaurant? Check out Al Amin’s menu on their website. Is it too early for lunch?

21.01.2022 A draft vision has been released for the future of the Melbourne Showgrounds’ site. There is more information on the attached link and on the RASV website. You can also attend a webinar at 6.30pm on Wed 18 Nov to hear from the project team and designers, and contribute ideas. What do you think?

21.01.2022 Moonee Valley City Council's recently elected councillors will be sworn in at tomorrow night's meeting on Tues 17 Nov 2020 from 6.30pm. It will be live-streamed via Council's YouTube channel for those interested in watching. The collage of councillors is from Council's website, linked in the comments below.

20.01.2022 How do we best stay connected in Flemington? The state government is offering grants to support community-led initiatives to build connection, reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation and can be implemented quickly. Any ideas on what we or other local associations or groups might do?

19.01.2022 Congratulations to our newly elected councillors for Myrnong Ward of Moonee Valley Council: Jacob Bettio, Rose Iser and Katrina Hodgson. Commiserations to the other candidates. Thanks to Jim Cusack for his contribution to Council over many years. We look forward to working closely with our new councillors and those from other wards on issues affecting Flemington, including Newmarket and Travancore. Details of the results are available on the VEC website, linked below.

19.01.2022 Moonee Valley City Council is seeking input on how children, young people, parents, and the wider community use parks within the municipality, with a focus on how to improve recreational opportunities for young people. Could we have a climbing wall or dedicated skate ramps under Citylink? The feedback is at times directed to parks in the north and options for mountain biking but, depending on the options chosen, general ideas and suggestions can be provided.

19.01.2022 Tonight's first regular meeting of Moonee Valley City Council included three motions directly affecting Flemington plus plans to change design approvals for the proposed Racecourse Rd Newmarket Tavern Hotel prior to the pending VCAT hearing. Here are the individual motions regarding the Hub, Kent St traffic and plans for the Racecourse Rd Activity Centre. They were moved and seconded by local ward councillors and, with only one minor amendment, carried unanimously.

18.01.2022 It’s not entirely clear what this means. (Will the underpass be spruced up?) But schedule in a walk around Racecourse Rd if you want to cross the tracks late night on Wed 16 Dec.

18.01.2022 If you haven’t seen him already, here is Robert. He will be in Pridham Plaza for the next couple of months as part of the Me and UooUoo arts trail celebrating 150 years of the Royal Children’s Hospital. Designed by artist Steve Monk, Robert is sponsored by Flemington Traders and Moonee Valley City Council. He’s described as a wild animal in an urban jungle. Is that fitting for Flem Ken? Regardless, he’s very cute. Here’s hoping Robert is a good omen for more public sculpture and art in 2021!

17.01.2022 Moonee Valley City Council has extended its Council Plan survey until Sun 11 Apr. It's a short questionnaire via the link attached. Community consultation on the Draft Plan is expected in August 2021.

17.01.2022 Congratulations to our local state MP, Danny Pearson, who was today sworn in as Minister for Creative Industries. This is in addition to Danny's roles as Assistant Treasurer, Minister for Government Services, Minister for Regulatory Reform and local parliamentary representative for Flemington and the rest of the seat of Essendon. Best wishes in the new role.

16.01.2022 Feedback on the "refreshed" plans for the City of Melbourne's plans for "Macaulay" are due by next Tues 15 Sep 2020. The plans refer to development and other other "opportunities" in parts of Kensington and North Melbourne that include Racecourse Rd and will have a big impact on everyone in Flem Ken. So now's your chance to contribute!

16.01.2022 6th Melbourne Scout Group on McCracken St have details online on how to book Christmas trees this year, with specified pick-up times from Kensington Primary School or delivery at a small fee.

15.01.2022 One of the many things members of the Flemington Association have focused on in recent years is celebrating our local built heritage and history. We’ve done so in publications, talks and walks, and via the Flemington Heritage Facebook page. Next Sat 27 Mar there will be a heritage walk of Flemington & Kensington (from 11am-2pm) and an Art Deco walk (from 2-4pm). These are associated with the Rotary Art Show, which is on next weekend. Each walk leaves from Kensington Town Hall.

15.01.2022 One Kris Kringle sorted, courtesy of Flemington's Organic Wholefoods. What plans do you have for any local Christmas shopping? Any ideas?

15.01.2022 The state government has announced $5m of funding towards the new council and sports facilities on Debney's Park. Our local state MP Danny Pearson this week hosted the Minister for Community Sport for an online announcement with councillors and officers from Moonee Valley City Council and representatives from Newmarket Phoenix and other soccer clubs.

13.01.2022 5km radius from Flemington Post Office. (There's a link to the map radius calculator in the comments below.)

11.01.2022 Some of us hadn’t even heard the rumours... But, if it is true, as they say on the windows, that Elephant is opening up a new cafe on the corner of Shields St and Mount Alexander Rd, that seems like something to look forward to!

11.01.2022 "While we all offer support now, it is an opportunity for the ongoing reality of public housing living to be understood - and improved." Local Rose Iser writes in today's Canberra Times about the impact of locking up our public housing tenants and the generous response from most in the broader community. For those in the high-rise, call out if you need help. People are listening now, and many trying to respond positively, and hopefully will into the future.

10.01.2022 Does anyone know why the playground at Debney’s Park is closed? There have been fences up for a while now, with signs explaining the obvious but not supplying any explanation.

09.01.2022 It's striking that, in the same week Flemington is in the media for expanding our social housing for those in need, we are in the news for the sale of one house on Pin Oak Crescent for over $1.6 million. What does that say about our community?

09.01.2022 Who has escaped from here before...?

09.01.2022 Nominations today closed for council elections. There are 10 nominees for the 3 councillor positions in Myrnong Ward of Moonee Valley City Council. Next week there will be more details. At this stage it looks like there are 6 independents, 3 ALP candidates and 1 Greens candidate, with at least 2 candidates from Flemington (incl. Travancore). Time to start thinking about how you might vote!

08.01.2022 This is the second of a six-part Guardian series on life inside Melbourne’s high-rise public housing, much of it focusing on the Flemington flats, with some great images. It's a fantastic record of a generation. One for Flemington Heritage!

07.01.2022 For the next three weeks, Flemington & Kensington Bowls Club has Cha Chas vegan Mexican food truck onsite for Twilight Fridays. There are also free bowls and $15 jugs of craft beer. Who needs cheap interstate flights when you can go local?

07.01.2022 A Shields St resident has today found and taken in a roaming dog without any collar or identification. It's not the dog depicted here. If you have lost a terrier, please contact us and we will put you in touch with the resident and hopefully reunite you with the dog.

07.01.2022 Moonee Valley City Council will tomorrow night (Tues 14 July) consider to retrospectively approve plans to construct its proposed Hub right on top of Debney's Park. If the earlier consultation did not do so, the past few months have emphasised how Debney's Park is so much more than a sports ground for the residents of the high-rise and surrounds. If you are concerned about this, please contact Council and your councillors and ask them to rethink this and to construct buildings nearer to the road and not on the park.

06.01.2022 Here is an update from the Premier via local MP Danny Pearson, with the DHHS contact number. We understand some residents are still worried about access to fresh food and other supplies. Please be patient. Hopefully DHHS will respond soon.

05.01.2022 While many of us are gripped at the moment by the US presidential election, others in Flemington's community are focused on Ethiopia and on what's taking place in the Tigray region, and its potential effect on neighbouring countries. If you're uncertain about what's happening there, and why it's of concern, this Al Jazeera article provides an explainer.

05.01.2022 Moonee Valley City Council is seeking input from young people on how the old AJ Automotive site might best be set up as a pocket park. Council describes this as a small park - suitable for small gatherings rather than playing. Broader feedback will presumably be sought later. For now young people need to submit their ideas by Sun 30 Aug. Do we have many young followers..? Share the word.

05.01.2022 What's your favourite place around our zone? The Age today features a number of locations, including Flemington Racecourse. The VRC has traditionally kept its doors open for locals to respectfully enjoy its space, given that it's Crown land, but it's a tightly kept secret. Let's hope they continue that. Few of us are likely to be able to walk very far in and back in the time allocated. So where do you go?

03.01.2022 Innovative dishes inspired by the food culture of Los Angeles... When will this lockdown end? The fit out looks great. In the meantime, you can apparently Uber-order from new kid on the block, Autumn Leaves. When you can, try to support our local cafes and businesses.

03.01.2022 Here is Council's video flyover depiction of its proposed Hub buildings on Debney's Park. What do you think?

02.01.2022 The VRC and Flemington Racecourse have shared this little video showing how this year's roses were cut and distributed to people who have provided support over recent difficult times or found things hard, including many in the Flemington & Kensington community. You can spot a few local identities from the hardworking Flem Ken Rotary team, who helped out yet again. Nice one.

01.01.2022 SOS! We need your help to keep the Flemington Association going! We'll share a series of posts to remind you how important it is to have a local organisation committed to representing and protecting our neighbourhood. We need volunteers to join our committee and see us into the future. If we don't succeed, our group and this Facebook page may not survive. The Association needs to be representative of our community, but we also need support. Check out the message below from our Acting President. If you can help out, please send us a message!

01.01.2022 Many of you out there will know the writer Penny Smits, who - until very recently - lived in Flemington and for many years wrote for the Flem Ken News. Penny has written this lovely little ode to Melbourne during Covid-19 times. The 59 tram rates a mention. One wonders how all its regular passengers are coping at the moment.

01.01.2022 Moonee Valley City Council shares this positive story on how Flemington Traders worked with Council and DHHS to help over the past week. For the next 6 weeks, takeaway is our only way to support our local restaurants.
