24.01.2022 The school holidays have meant that we have a 6-year-old in among our 2-year-olds! Mixed aged groups is one of my favorite things about Family Day Care. The younger children have exposure to a mentor and role model as well as access to more complex and challenging ideas. The older children are given a sense of responsibility and a chance to share their knowledge. The benefits are numerous but it's also just heart-warming to witness how gentle, patient and kind children can be with their younger peers.

23.01.2022 Making the most of the springtime flowers. The children chose and picked which ones they wanted to put in the flower-press last week. This week we stuck them on paper to take home. These are a lovely and very easy personalised gift that anyone can make.

23.01.2022 I was cleaning some crayon marks off the walls and it attracted the interest of my young friends. A sponge cut in 3, a bowl of warm, soapy water & scrubbing brushes. Many hands make light work!

22.01.2022 When you let kids go wild

21.01.2022 A good resource to help young children who have had experience with bushfires.

19.01.2022 A lot of kids are overhearing worrying information about the Coronavirus pandemic at the moment. This is a nice resource to help them understand it in a practical & non-threatening way.

19.01.2022 Spring is just around the corner! Today’s gorgeous weather was just what the doctor ordered.

18.01.2022 We stumbled upon this amazing fairy door in our neighborhood today. It even has a front and back door. And if you peek in through the front door, it appears as though there's a little tea party inside!

18.01.2022 Hold on to your hats! It was a windy one today. We still managed to get some broad bean seeds planted eventually though.

16.01.2022 Over the last few months, two Spoonvilles have popped up in our neighbourhood. It’s been very interesting meeting new Spoon residents as they populate the new towns. Some of the Spoons even have young spoon-children!

12.01.2022 We’ve been waiting for over a week for a bit of sunshine for this activity Finally today we could start dying pasta. next step: Pasta jewellery!

09.01.2022 While this may LOOK like child exploitation, these two are actually engaged in a practical life activity (which has the added benefit of tidying my backyard!) One child draws a circle and sweeps the dirt inside that circle, the other collects the dirt with a dustpan and broom. This is a classic Montessori inspired activity that children love because it gives them a great sense of inner satisfaction.

07.01.2022 Today while it was raining we made mosaic borders for our pressed flowers.

06.01.2022 Thinking a lot these days. Processing a lot these days. Thinking about the stories we tell, the stories we listen to, the ones that stay with us, the ones we re...tell, the ones we relive. Thinking about storytelling as medicine. What does storytelling give us? What does storytelling enable us to do? Sharing just some of storytellings gifts in this drawing. How do you tell stories? A few stories that have stayed with me lately- I watched the second season of Fleabag and thought it was such an interesting form of storytelling, sitting with a friend today sharing stories of loved ones with dementia, writing a note to Jeremy Corbyn today to tell him about our community and what I’ve witnessed these past months, reading stories of famine and floods and fires and grief online. Thinking of which stories I really want to tell and searching for the most potent ways to tell them. Jill x

06.01.2022 Madam Rabbit is just about to open the bakery-café so hurry up to get your fresh croissants!

05.01.2022 This young artist is also quite the scientist. He experimented mixing just the right amounts of colour to make green, orange and pink. Making paint is almost as much fun as applying it to paper!

05.01.2022 You don't always need to spend a lot of money to create a learning environment inspired by popular educational philosophies. We have gotten so much use out of this Winnie The Pooh block tower. The blocks fit inside each other as they graduate in size and they can be used to make towers and steps. Even putting them away inside each other is interesting for children as they develop their spacial awareness. It's definitely sacrilegious to my Montessori training but the benefits ...of the famous Montessori "Pink Tower" are all there: "Firstly, the Pink Tower helps a child build a concept of size in three dimensions. This includes working on visual perception, and awareness of dimension, both leading to an understanding of size in the environment. The Pink Tower also helps develop a child’s fine muscular coordination. The activity stemming from this material work on the perfection hand movements, and the coordination of movement. Finally, the Pink Tower is a Montessori material which helps prepare children for abstract mathematical concepts. This includes preparation for spatial volume, and the cube root. The Pink Tower is a perfect example of how Montessori materials require children to use multiple sense at once. They are created in such a way to compliment a child’s stage of development, where they use all their senses to learn."

05.01.2022 There’s so much happening in the garden recently. It’s been very rewarding for us all to enjoy the fruits of our labour!
