24.01.2022 We were saddened to hear of Sir Ken Robinson's passing late last week. A passionate advocate for educational change, Sir Ken spoke with conviction and humour, convincing even staunch traditionalists to consider his perspective. We share this video, for those who have seen it before and those to whom it is new, with gratitude for his work in our field. 22.01.2022 "The big smart world that's all connected. There are lots of different lands. The ocean land, the sandy land, the hot land, the grassy land, and two different muddy lands" - child aged 4 Young children's encounters with art provide a means to explore ideas and materials, invent worlds, and tell narratives. As a language and mode of communication, art offers children the opportunity to play with ideas and generate conclusions about themselves and their experiences. The communicative nature of children's artwork suggests their desire to be heard and understood by those around them. #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #flinderschildren #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #earlychildhoodeducation #learningthroughplay #earlychildhoodarts

22.01.2022 The Preschool House children and educators have been tallying their hours outside and looking for a tangible way to record them. Alongside the chart, our ever-patient handyperson has installed a tube with a viewing window. But what could we fill it with...rocks? Felt balls? Sticks? In keeping with our commitment to sustainable practices, we landed upon bottle lids - something small, light and already readily available within our community. With the combined efforts of families and the local Reduce, Reuse, Recycle community, we now have enough bottle lids to cover the next few months at least. Perfect! #preschoolhouse1000hoursoutside #1000hoursoutside #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #flinderschildren #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #natureplaysa #itsbetteroutside

21.01.2022 A morning walk in the garden reveals produce ready for harvest...together, children and educators read the menu and decide to make a salad for lunch. The harvest basket is plentiful, and our cook gifts a cucumber. Children use knives with care, discussing with educators the safe use of tools. Later, one child passes on their learning to their parent; "The blade is sharp. Hold onto the handle and move the blade back and forth." Simple things, done with great care... #flinderschildren #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #seedtotable #itsbetteroutside

21.01.2022 Yesterday a thick sea mist enveloped the city of Adelaide. The entire city was bathed in a soupy fog, blocking out the sun and obscuring our view. The gardens at Flinders seemed like islands in an ocean, we could barely see from one garden to the next. The mist prompted wonder as children developed hypotheses to explain what they saw; "It's snowing" suggested some; "It's foggy!" suggested others. Donning our warmest clothes, we set out to explore. Natural phenomena are best explored sensorially; we touched, smelled, tasted and viewed the sea mist in all its foggy glory. It's at times like these we are most thankful for our all-weather outdoor programs. #flindersunversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #growingcommunityeducatingchildren #itsbetteroutside

17.01.2022 "When your child asks, "Why is there a moon?" Don't reply with a scientific answer. Ask him, "What do you think?" He will understand that you are telling him, "You have your own mind and your own interpretation and your ideas are important to me". Then you and he can look for the answers, sharing the wonder, curiosity, pain - everything. It is not the answers that are important, it is the process - that you and he search together." - Carlina Rinaldi #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #flinderschildren #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #itsbetteroutside #wonder #earlychildhoodeducation #reggioemilia #reggioinspired

16.01.2022 Picasso said; "Every child is an artist, the trouble is trying to remain an artist as we grow up." This series of photos capture artists at Flinders, from Baby House to Sturt House, as we try to instill a passion for artistic expression that lasts beyond childhood. #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #flinderschildren #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #earlychildhoodeducation #earlychildhoodart

16.01.2022 Kneading dough is a complex physical experience, involving both gross and fine motor control. Dough is often weighty and dense; children engage the muscles of the arms, shoulders and back as they fold and press. It also requires fine motor control as the muscles of the hands work together to control the dough on the surface. See the way the hands in the picture articulate in opposition to one another; the a-symmetrical nature of this work encourages bilateral integration skills. This means the child is practising working both sides of the body at the same time, which is essential for learning to read and write! #itsmorethanbread #sturthousebreadproject #flinderschildren #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity

16.01.2022 A little world of green for your Monday...storytelling tables invite children to retell or represent well-known stories in new ways. This is a fantastic way for children to develop emerging literacy skills. Literacy in the early years is more than reading and writing; it is art, language, dance and drama - communication in all it's varied forms! #flinderschildren #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #learningthroughplay #playbasedliteracy

15.01.2022 Art can be a way of thinking, feeling, imagining, relating and expressing. Art can be a way to be in the world. Ann Pelo At Flinders, we believe art provides a new set of skills for self-expression and communication. Art can be a critical mode of uninhibited self-expression and amazement for a child. #flinderschildren... #childrensartisalsoamazingforeducators #itisbetteroutside #anotherfancyhat #againlookatthathand #flinderschildrenarethebest #itisnotcubism #perhpaesrealism #flinderschildrenpainteveryday #maybeweshouldallpainteveryday #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #annpelosaysthebestthings See more

14.01.2022 Today the children took a boat to Kangaroo Island. The boat departed from Toddler House. They took the babies, a pusher and a basket of toys. It was smooth sailing. When they arrived they disembarked and took a wander around the island checking out the sites. Someone commented that 'an adventure to an island is always more fun with lots of friends.' Won't they get a surprise on Monday. #wearebackbaby #seeyousoon... #mondayagogo #flindersuniversitychilcarecentre #itisbetteroutside #igetseasick #whatisnext #childrensaythebestthings #iamalwayslearningsomethingnew #weareallinthistogether #dontwanttosailtoKIinaboatwithnobottom #iwillstopfloodingyourfeednow See more

08.01.2022 A magical moment with light in Toddler House...we have been exploring light and shadow with torches, light up balls and light ropes. The children are captivated by the way it moves, reflects and beams in the small dark room. As we investigate together, the educators wonder where to next? How will we scaffold future discoveries? We pose an invitation to the children; a basket of coloured perspex blocks on the sunny deck. As the children start to build one child notices the c...oloured light reflecting down on the decking. Look, Look! Colour! And so, we discover that shadows can be rainbows. #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #learningthroughplay #itsbetteroutside #earlychildhoodeducation

07.01.2022 Look. Look again. Look closer. Science in the early years is experiential; it is about stimulating curiosity, noticing changes, wondering. 06.01.2022 Environmental philosopher David Orr wrote 'if literacy is driven by the search for knowledge, ecological literacy is driven by the sense of wonder, the sheer delight in being alive in a beautiful, mysterious, bountiful world'. At Flinders we believe that water play can support children to feel this sense of wonder and delight. We wish to support children to understand the importance of the earth’s resources, to feel hopeful and agentic and to be agents of change for sustaina...bility. 06.01.2022 Observational drawing invites children to look more closely; to notice the finer details and then translate that into line and colour. Children's art is not only expressive; in the case of observational drawing, it is also scientific. 04.01.2022 A collection of logs and branches are frequent features in the gardens at Flinders. This group of children worked hard, collaboratively, for a long time. First, shifting all the branches from the bark to the hill; hard, heavy work which to achieve required great persistence to negotiate the changing surfaces and undulating terrain. Then, bringing them all back at the provocation of an educator, and using them to construct a dwelling. Angela Hanscom, paediatric occupational therapist and author of Balanced and Barefoot, states; "Heavy work helps to develop a strong and capable proprioceptive system." #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #growingcommunityeducatingchildren #learningthroughplay

02.01.2022 Art in the early years is about process, about creation, about imagination. It matters little what the final piece looks like; children learn through the act of creation. 01.01.2022 Can you see what they see? The natural world is a powerful provocator of children's learning. Noticing the changing of the seasons, collecting treasures, spying birds and other fauna - these simple experiences are deeply meaningful for children. The EYLF states that outdoor environments; "foster an appreciation of the natural environment, develop environmental awareness and provide a platform for ongoing environmental education" (p16). Building a relationship with the natural world is the first step in sustainability education. ps - there is a miner bird hiding in the grevillea, drinking nectar #flindersuniversitychildcarecentre #flindersuniversity #growingcommunitieseducatingchildren #earlychildhoodeducation #EYLF #natureplay #itsbetteroutside #sustainabilityeducation
