25.01.2022 Thank you to all those who came to last night's talk on Psychology in Acute Medical and Sexual Health Settings! We hope you took away something meaningful and feel better equipped to support a diverse range of patients

25.01.2022 Last Sunday was Clean Up Australia Day, and we invited everyone to come along to FUSEC's beach clean up event at Hallett Cove. The amazing collective effort resulted in of 352 soft plastics, 417 pieces of hard plastic, 122 bottle caps, 98 pieces of fishing equipment, 131 pieces of polystyrene, 52 straws, 130 pieces of glass, 15 drink bottles, 4 lighters, 27 plastic containers & utensils, 17 toys, 6 shoes, 25 pieces of rubber, 12 aluminium cans, 15 m of wire, 8 bricks, 3 car p...arts, 20 cigarette butts, and 21 pieces of clothing being gathered! Some key facts from the guest speaker from Sea Shepherd: More than 70% of ocean trash comes from inland, so be mindful of what you choose to use! Plastics don't break down, they just keep breaking up into smaller and smaller pieces - studies have even shown microplastics regularly ending up inside humans! Ocean plastic is a surface for algae to grow, but this emits an odour causing many seabirds to mistake the trash for food (the jar in the photo below contains items that were found inside of birds) To keep in the loop with more events like this where you can learn or work hands-on with other cool and passionate peeps, join FUSEC here! --> https://www.facebook.com/groups/flindersenvironment/

22.01.2022 Fashion Friday Send us a snap of your best thrifted outfit for a chance to win a prize! First prize is a book on waste-free living, and second prize is one of our KeepCups!... One of the largest industries in the world, fashion is the greatest global pollutant second only to oil. Fast fashion cheaply produced, temporarily trendy, high turnover garments are the main culprit, with global consumption of 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year. In Australia, 85% of textiles purchased are discarded to landfill. Why is this a problem? Garment production emits greenhouse gases Manufacturing is energy and resource intensive Synthetic fibres such as nylon and acrylic (i.e. a plastic) could take centuries to break down, and contribute to microplastic pollution in waterways Many fashion companies (especially in fast fashion) exploit workers, underpaying them and providing inappropriate and/or unsafe working conditions Risk of depression has been observed to be increased in workers of clothing manufacturers What can you do? Look at brands with accreditation from Ethical Clothing Australia Read about environmentally friendly materials Donate or upcycle old garments Make purchases for quality > quantity More resources: https://sustainability.uq.edu.au//fast-fashion-quick-cause https://baptistworldaid.org.au//2019-ethical-fashion-guide/ https://www.fashionrevolution.org https://ethicalclothingaustralia.org.au/manufacturers/

21.01.2022 It's Earth Day today Let's celebrate progress and keep pushing for a better future for everyone on this planet! We know globally and locally, not everyone has the same capacity to make the best choices for our planet, even if they might be affected more in the end. BUT we can all push for governments and mega polluting companies to take accountability! That's why we'd love for you lovely STUDENTS & PROFESSIONALS IN HEALTH to get AGL, Australia's biggest climate pollute...r, to switch to 100% renewables by 2030, instead of mostly using coal which is terrible for our individual and planetary health Petition - open to read more! https://www.healthyfutures.net.au/agl

15.01.2022 QAMSA X AMSA MENTAL HEALTH Humans of Medicine There is something very sobering about seeing the rate of depression and anxiety among the trans community and th...inking, That’s me. I’m part of that statistic. Mental illness is easiest to talk about with statistics, with specific values of risk and percentage incidence, when every person waking up in the morning and wishing they had never existed at all is just another figure in a calculation. Sometimes, the statistics are confronting even without that reminder. But, so often, people take the wrong message from them; instead of wondering why those statistics are what they are, they assume that there is something fundamentally unwell about trans people. Being trans has influenced my life in ways that I often fail to satisfactorily explain. But it would be remiss of me to not acknowledge that one of the greatest impacts it has had is on my mental health. The mental health challenges I face are some that many (if not most) teenagers face; feeling alienated from my own body, misunderstood by the people around me, and ostracised from my friends and classmates. None of these are inherent to being trans, but being trans inextricably alters them in a way that many psychologists are not trained to navigate. This poses an unneeded challenge in trans people’s path to seeking help for their mental health. Even if you can find a psychologist who is an ally (which, in itself, can seem impossible), how many are unprepared to counsel trans people? How many psychologists with a special interest in trans mental health are gatekeepers? How many believe that the mental health challenges experienced by trans people are inherent to being transgender, rather than a reflection of our society? Where do you go when you can’t trust the care you’ll receive? At the beginning of my medical degree, they told us that, statistically, medical students and doctors are more likely to struggle with mental illness than any other occupation. I thought to myself, I’ve already proved that statistic and I haven’t even started. But there is also something strangely comforting, knowing I’m not the only medical student or the only trans person to have struggled with their mental health. Statistically, I’m in the majority.
