25.01.2022 Congratulations to Melinda Schawel for teaching herself a whole new process working with metal and opening up the world of public art with this beautiful new installation of a tree grille for the City of Casey. The Cranbourne West Community Hub is due to open in January 2021. If you scroll through the images you will be able to see a close up of one of Melinda's paperworks- the inspirational texture behind this special new piece. And a beautiful wall sculpture we have available through FLG. https://www.flg.com.au/artist/melinda-schawel/contemporary Many thanks also to City of Casey.

22.01.2022 Very excited to be receiving the glorious new paintings by Jo Davenport tomorrow! Jo's new solo 'Revival' is on at FLG from the 13 October until 30th October. The preview for her exhibition has just gone out. The link is in the profile. " A deep sense of optimism and reverence has been imbued within the vibrant abstract images painted by Albury artist Jo Davenport. While connected to the tradition of landscape painting, in which the artist records the natural world around th...em, Davenport’s practice moves beyond the literal or representational, shifting toward an interior, felt response to the sensations of the landscape. 16.01.2022 Two surprise new additions to our current exhibition 'Still' arrived this morning from Michelle Molinari. Absolutely stunning works! Very happy to include these into the exhibition. Thank you @michellemolinariartist :) (details in profile) Michelle is a painter, taxidermist and installation artist whose practice explores notions of death, fleeting beauty and the act of commemoration. Drawing upon traditions of taxidermic representation and European still life painting, Molin...ari works across various media to blur the boundaries between the inanimate and corporeal and to question ideas of aesthetic value. ‘The process and understanding of taxidermy itself is vital to the developmental process of my work, not only does the act of creating the taxidermy enable me to acquire an internal and empathetic understanding of the animal, it is also just as revealing of the human sentiment to hold something away from death as well as reveal it.’ Artist Statement, Michelle Molinari Artworks: Michelle Molinari Cautionary 2020 oil on panel 90cm x 60cm Self Portrait Reflected in Glass Dome of Finches 2020 charcoal and white chalk on paper 70cm x 50cm , unframed #taxidermy #stilllife #michellemolinari #flinderslanegallery #onlineexhibition #still #portrait #selfportrait

16.01.2022 It's already the second week of Jon Eiseman's exhibition and without us ever opening the doors it will be over again. In light of this I intend on creating another exhibition in the showroom with these wonderful new sculptures once our doors open again so you can enjoy them in person. In the meantime I've created a little details video so you can see more of the care and consideration in each and every work. Jon Eiseman’s sculptures extend beyond the physical, encompassing n...otions of time, spirituality and emotion. Cast in bronze his figurative sculptures have a whimsical and poetic quality in which the common man - often represented as a suited figure or solitary head - is fused with iconic symbols of the vessel, fish, bird, tower, tree, flag and ladder to suggest contemplation, humour and internal struggle. Drawn from the shadow world of dream and the inner landscape of the unconscious, his work creates an intriguing open-ended sense of narrative. Jon Eiseman has been a practicing artist since 1985 Eiseman has completed several public, corporate and private commissions throughout Australia. His sculptural work features in the permanent collections of The Constable & Hershon Vineyard & Sculpture Garden, Hunter Valley, NSW, La Trobe University Collection, Parliament House, Hobart, Tasmania, Geelong Regional Gallery, Burnie Regional Gallery, and Point Leo Sculpture Park in Victoria and in private collections in New Zealand, USA, Asia and Europe. 15.01.2022 Showcasing new works from a selection of FLG's stable of artists, STILL responds to our recent collective experience of living in quiet isolation. While Covid lock downs have indeed been a difficult process, these months have also afforded opportunities for inward reflection, moments of gentle observation and productive time for creativity. Through the practice of still life each of our FLG artists reflects on the world around them as a means to find hope, humour and appreciation. https://www.flg.com.au/exhibition/still

15.01.2022 Eventide by Meg Cowell Art for the night. The night is beautiful. The night is romantic. The night is menacing. And so it is with Meg Cowell’s sumptuous photographic works. We are delighted to present this stunning suite of new photography works by Meg as an online-only exhibition. https://www.flg.com.au/exhibition/eventide (Link in profile) "Cowell’s work is undoubtedly beautiful as any star-filled night, but within that beauty lies a subtle sense of menace. Somehow, as w...e gaze at the luminous glory of these delicate frocks, we feel uneasy - as though we might perhaps be looking at death in a ball gown. The works are lush with rococo splendour the pastel satins of the gowns are trapped in an eternal, graceful dance. They are romantic images that call to mind candle-lit soirees of Belle Époque elegance; and yet the decadent silks begin to dissipate into smoke at their edges, becoming unreal, immaterial; like Cinderella’s carriage, the façade of beauty is a temporary glamour that quickly evaporates in the light of dawn - or in this case, into the infinite black void." excerpt from catalogue essay by Eric Henshall, 2020 @meg.cowell #megcowell #photography #australianphotography #couture #gowns #underwater #decadent #graceful #onlineexhibition #momentomori

12.01.2022 Flinders Lane Gallery is delighted to be participating in Sydney Contemporary Presents 2020, this year's unique manifestation of the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair. As a unique online event SCP aims to encourage audiences to buy a new artwork made during this challenging year and to support Australian artists. This revolving mixed media sculpture by Jacob Leary 'It needs to grow' is in a process of growth and accumulation. Drawing on Tristan Garcia’s conceptualisation of intens...ity as the prevailing religion defining contemporary (and modern existence), 'It needs to grow' is an embodiment of contemporary perception. This embodiment exists in a world that needs things now, better, more intense, and then repeated, until we’re bored and then we’ll find something else and repeat. As an embodiment of contemporary perception, the work is trying to be noticed and keep your attention for longer. It’s a stronger, faster, better, harder logic. It’s a race to excess. It isn’t what the work is about, it not a packaged concept to takeaway. It’s purely the contemporary conditions which with the art-object grew from and which it must respond to, to perceptual disrupt, seduce, and matter. It's just trying to do its thing. See more

10.01.2022 In the essay by Elli Walsh, William Breen's work is described as possessing a "a sense of Romantic urbanity, a paradoxical mundane sublimity, that draws out attention to the profound beauty in the banal. Capturing each vista with precision and sensitivity, the artist casts light quite literally on the bypassed, the forgotten and the ordinary. Sun drenched shopfronts, vacant roads and derelict walls take on new meaning in the shadow of the Covid lockdowns." This is Madame... Sousou gouache on paper 35 x 62cm. 01.01.2022 Rich in content with social, political and cultural references, this is a deceptively simple and elegant portrait of Kathrin Longhurst as a young girl. I'm delighted to say we'll be receiving this into the gallery in the next couple of weeks. Kathrin has written a really interesting statement to go with this piece- see excerpt below. (For full please see https://www.flg.com.au/art/artist-young-girl/contemporary) "This is the third in a series of portraits that uses my daught...er as a metaphor for my own life story. As a child of the cold war, growing up behind the Berlin wall in the most controlled and ideologically hard-line satellite states of the Soviet Union, the German Democratic Republic, I acquired a very one-sided view of history, politics and the world in general. I was a teenager when I first discovered the West and had to relearn history and interpretations of world events. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, this deeply conflicted time of my life sparked an enormous interest in freedom of speech, propaganda and more recently women’s role in society and the push for greater gender equality. This painting depicts an adolescent female looking nervously over her shoulder. She could be taken from a film noir or a spy novel, her demeanours are exaggerated and cinematic. She is yet to become the empowered, confident woman she is destined to be. Here she is captured at a time that is uncertain, confusing, frightening but also full of possibilities. She is superimposed over newspaper print. The publication is the Berliner Zeitung, the main East German daily morning newspaper, highly censored and contributing to the spread of the Communist Party’s ideology. The front cover of the newspaper cited my birthdate. The main headlines from the day include criticism of the US invasion of Vietnam, ovations to the GDR-USSR trade exchange and industrial co-operation and a small feature on the role of public art and culture in our everyday life. Underneath the girl's jacket you can glimpse a schematic view of a disassembled 70’s hairdryer, referencing a rebellion against women’s conformity and a nod to the 70’s feminist movement." @kathrinlonghurst #portraitpainting
