24.01.2022 Pro Tip Thursday Summer is a great time to look at how we are watering our garden beds.... Here are some effective techniques and some food for thought when watering your garden. The time of day to water our garden. It is recommended to water your garden in the morning, where possible, as the humidity is at its lowest at that time of day. When we water in the warmer time of the afternoon, we create humidity, and this can encourage a favourable environment for pest and disease on our plants, however, if you are only able to water your garden in the after or night do not stress, it is better to water your garden then to not water your garden at all. Deep irregular watering When we water every day for a small amount of time it can promote shallow surface roots, rather than the deeper anchoring roots plants need for stability. Try to water every two to three days and for a longer period of time, this will help to toughen the plants and encourage their roots grow down, anchoring deeper into the soil. This is very important for trees. When watering your lawns, it is typically better to water regularly for shorter time periods. Layer Watering This is a technique used for the deeper watering of your garden beds. Choose a starting point in one section of the garden and work your way around slowly and steadily until you come back to your starting point. Repeat this, two or three times. With each go around, the water seeps deeper into the soil to ensure a deeper watering. You want to see the water pool on top of the surface then soak into the soil.
