25.01.2022 Good design is a universal way we can enhance the quality of our lives. At this time when so many of us are being reclusive, we have a chance to focus on how our homes and gardens make us feel. (Maybe too much of a chance!) Comfort & wellbeing can be improved through considering furniture placement, access to daylight, colour choices & our outlook to the exterior. Little adjustments can make a huge difference to how you feel. A fresh lick of paint in the living room, a couple... of lush indoor plants, or even just putting that old antique chair pride of place & adorning it with a gorgeous cushion & throw - these moves lift a space & can lift your mood. A fave decorating trick is to drape warm (not white!) LED string fairy lights over furniture. No such thing as too many fairylights! 25.01.2022 3D model render for a Sydney balcony refurbishment. With a sustainable emphasis, the project involves sourcing edible plants, a recycled (PET bottle) outdoor rug, woven water hyacinth hangers, sculptural LED lamp, timber furniture & pots aplenty! 12.01.2022 @wilderness_aus - 'The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC) is Australia’s national environment law. It might have a long, boring title but it should be doing something incredibly important for us all. The EPBC is meant to stop threatened species like the Leadbeater's possum and iconic Tasmanian Devil from going extinct, safeguard our natural places and ensure all governments work together to protect Australia’s environment and natural dive...rsity of life. Yet our current protections and laws leave many of Australia's animals facing extinction. The Government is required to review the EPBC every ten years, and in 2019-2020 we have a once-in-a-decade chance to deal with Australia’s extinction and deforestation crises. Having strong, effective environment laws is vitally important as right now Australia leads the world in mammal extinction and is second only to Indonesia for biodiversity loss. The Government has to choose if they’ll fix these problems or be persuaded by the calls from big business to weaken our wildlife protections even further. We want to get as many community submissions as possible made into the review of the EPBC taking place now, to tell the government that we expect strong new nature laws - see our handy guide to making a submission.' . Embrace fruit trees in the front garden, I say! They provide an enticing atmosphere for bees, birds & humans alike; with gorgeous autumnal hues, sweet blossoms & then lush canopies in summer. Not to mention the underrated spindly sculptural branches in winter which allow the winter sun to reach the understorey. 03.01.2022 Snippet of a concept design for a young Melbourne family. The design focused on flowering plants with textural interest, a native hedge for privacy & a pixelated paving zone (consisting of salvaged, re-painted pavers from the site). It was a joy to see this space transform within a month from a dusty, bland site dominated by old conifers, to a lush new space the couple could enjoy with their new baby! I hope to put piccies up soon. As an aside, when I studied landscape archi...tecture in the late 'naughties', I was pretty much a technophobe - insisting on paper & pen. 02.01.2022 In the spirit of our newfound Melbourne al fresco freedom, I thought I'd share a custom moodboard for two linked garden spaces in Richmond: The layered gardens will provide space for relaxation, cooking, and entertaining around the bioethanol fire.... Both backyards will be visually linked through a clear vista and a similar lush plant palette of bamboo and potted large-leafed forms. This will be softened through incorporation of delicate, colourful ground-covers and shrubs which will hug the rectilinear pavers and raised garden beds. A palette of white, charcoal and mushroom (for hardscaping), and fuschia/silver/emerald/lime/ lilac & deep cherry for foliage and blooms will result in an elegant, yet characterful space. A large wall-mounted mirror will add depth to the space,’ whilst delicate back-lit laser cut screens will provide a contemporary touch; contrasting against the somewhat rustic forms of white-washed bricks. A bioethanol firepit (incorporating a table top) will set off a sunken entertaining space - whilst a larger, white table will provide space for pizza feasts!
