22.01.2022 Hey guys & gals, It’s been a while but looks like this virus thingy is coming to an end. Not sure about all of you, but I now have a healthy stash of flies intching to get chewed up due to a little bit to much time indoors. We have kind of skipped the Autum species challenge so moving forward we will jump straight into the winter species challenge, There will be our perpetual species challenge trophy and some prizes up for grabs. Start practicing not that we can get back... to doing what we love; I will keep everyone posted on the date for next meeting where we will set the specifics on species ect. See more
22.01.2022 Starlo just posted this fly up that he is working on. Verry much outside the box.
22.01.2022 Couple of things I have been working on of recent. Pic 1 = # 6 craft foam cicada imitation tied on a gamma b10s for some brackish summer time bream/ bass. Pic2 is a 2/0 gurgler. ... Now , this gurgler has a particular spot/species and technique in mind ! Mangrove Jack !!! In a hole !! Lots of current but little structure ; Where the fish are predominately holding off of the bottom and feeding from bottom to surface. To be fished at night time from an anchored boat. Fished on an 8 wt with a t 14 sink tip with full mono leader. The fly has a Large profile to push water & large glass rattle. Rabbit fur to create movement underneath. I have had quite a bit of success dredging with gurglers in this style of fishing. Do have to be careful to maintain contact with the buisness end and pick up the belly of line quickly when a fish is hooked. Do any of you guys tie for specific fishing scenarios? Would love to see some specific patters & techniques? Regards Chris J

14.01.2022 Hey guys , Was thinking whilst being struck with a bout of complete Bordom, during the last of this covid 19 period , and I could almost put $$ on the fact that everyone else is floundering in the same boat. Soooo............ how bout we throw down a tying competition to get us through. ... Ok ... Rules .... 1) flies tied must be posted on the sunny coat fly fishers page. 2) flies to be tied must include natural fibre of some type. 3) 3 flies of the same type must be tied to gauge consistency in the tie. 4) bonus points will be given for an eye and/ or a uv hot spot 5) any species can be accomodated for. (Bass- Billfish) Judging will take place on the 30th of this month A prize and perpetual trophy will be presented at our next meeting. Good luck Chris J

07.01.2022 Tonight’s tie is a crab loosely based on a vgdc to represent a paddler crab or ghost crab. Both org these types of crabs hug the bottom or burry into the sand, both crabs are light tan and or white in colour with yellow mouth parts, paddlers bury into the sand rapidly but swim slowly. Ghost crabs swim up of the bottom but burry into the sand slower leaving their eyes above the sand to lookout for predators. Many fish eat these crabs, I have seen many times where golden trevalley tail on them in shallow water and blow for lack of better description; them out of their hiding places to eat them.
04.01.2022 Worth a listen to if you want to learn things about fish behaviour from an expert. https://www.abc.net.au//culum-brown-fish-memories/13049482

03.01.2022 Re: Winter Species challenge At this month’s meeting it was decided to include the following species in this seasons challenge. Tailor ... Snapper Bream Australian bass These species cover all the bases with estuary, beach, offshore and freshwater covered and all are accessible via boat or land based. As Covid has affected the time frame for the winter challenge this year . We will set this challenge from now until the end of August. Post up picks of your catches on the sscswff Facebook page. Judging will take place at the September meeting where the seasonal species trophy will be awarded along with a small prize. Let’s get fishing Regards Chris
03.01.2022 Carlo point -September 2020 Trip Report. We arrived Friday afternoon and set up camp, not long after arriving the boys arrived and we settled into camp having a few beverages and setting a game plan for Saturday. Myself ( Chris J) plannned to head up to inskip early, just after sunrise on the incoming tide to check the flats on the inside of Fraser Island for some tailing fish, and then check for pelagic activity on the way back to camp arround high tide at 9.30 am. the boy...s planned to head up on the flats on the mainland side. Boats in the water arround 5..15am we were away. On the way up we caught up with Ben , Dan& gabby whom launched at bullock point in the kyacks and Ben on paddle board. I reached my destination about 25 mins later to find so much bait pushing up on a little pinch point. That I could have walked on their backs to the shore. Working this area i pulled out a nice cod (55cm ) on the 10 wt, he realy had me going for a bit. I like eating cod this size so he came home. The flats were fairly quiet, however the boys on the mainland side reported fish everywhere on a ledge they found, even sighting a free swimming coral trout in a place one would not expect to see this species. I found a school of tuna and worked them on fly but couldn’t manage an eat they were so close to the boat it was ridiculous. There was no pattern to how they were feeding and being solo in a little boat made it a little difficult. I did get one on 8 lb spin gear though as I was needing some crab pot baits. The boys had a great time on flatties cod and a number of other species during the morning session and moved arround a bit exploring the area and finding fish. I returned to camp had a bite to eat and then Ben and I headed off for the afternoon session. We found a gutter up in kauri creek and we worked it arround the mouth picking up a number of flatties ( 2 fish in 3 casts at one stage) We returned to camp knackered settled in for a wine or 3 and discussed the day and next days plan. Sunday morning the boys left sparrow fart early! I slept in and decided to pack up camp after having a coffee to mid the rain showers coming in later in the morning. The boys came back with more reports of good fishing and a great time had. All in all a great weekend, great company and some fishy madness at times. I thank everyone for coming up and spending the weekend or just a day, and look forward to doing another trip up to Carlo again , there is a lot more area to experience that we did not cover. See more
02.01.2022 Starting to look a lot like Toga time !! See you all at the Variety -Toga on fly event this weekend. Cheers Chris J
01.01.2022 Variety Toga Comp wrap up. We all arrived on Friday night at Boroumba deer park , settled in and went about have a few drinks , and having a yarn then trying to get some sleep in anticipation of the next days fishing. Up at 4.30 am ,over for breakfast burgers the off to the dam. The dam greeted us with fish flicking , crashing and rolling in many places in the early morning. I was in a little bay about 6.30 am where I saw the slightest roll on the surface landed my rookie ...Continue reading
