25.01.2022 A few of these little guys to put a bend in the 3 weight ... beetles are the menu item today.

21.01.2022 Only the 1 today. A few minutes after I released this one, got a very solid take and then nothing. A few casts later, same thing. Pulled the fly in for inspection thinking the hook may have hit a rock behind me or something - fly was backwards! The tippet was sitting in the gape of the hook ... that just cost me a hat trick! Oh well, that's fishing. Speaking of which - despite the low bag score, the past week has been one of the most enjoyable fishing trips in ages. Was ...my first winter lake session in quite a few years. Even though I've been up here a number of times over the past few years it's been all stream work. Nice to resharpen my lake fishing skills, although I had forgotten how far one can walk when fishing lakes ... I spent hours sitting and kneeling in the sandy mud on Jindabyne's river arms and saw a lot more trout than I expected to. Some real crackers too. A few nights on the way back I stopped to run a torch over some deeper pools in the river to see how many trout were in it. Each time there were fewer, which tells me they've probably all dropped back into the lake. See more

20.01.2022 What's everyone doing whilst self-isolating? Are you tying? Fishing?

20.01.2022 All trout anglers need to get on board with this. If Labor succeed in making the Great Forest NP a reality you can say goodbye to pretty much everything you currently enjoy doing in those areas that will be swallowed up by this gigantic proposed expansion. No walking off marked trails. No camping except in designated fee-payable areas. No 4WDing. No hunting. ... No prospecting. No dogs. No drones. No trout fishing within a few years as they'll be embarking on an extermination campaign. So write or email Minister Lily D'Ambrosio and tell her where she can shove her GFNP. See more

19.01.2022 Vale Merv McGuire Today we lost an angling advocacy angel in Victoria, someone who laboured for decades for the benefit of anglers throughout the State. Merv McGuire was someone who saw immense value in having a sustainable recreational fishery, freshwater and saltwater, and went about ensuring that successive generations would be able to enjoy it too. I had the immense pleasure and honour of working alongside Merv at the Victorian Recreational Fishing Roundtable Forum, a gov...ernment advisory body, as well as on the executive of the Australian Trout Foundation. Merv also figured large in the FutureFish Foundation alongside his old friend, Rex Hunt. Merv was one with the ability to bring together both sides in a dispute and bring about a positive outcome. Victorian anglers today and in the future enjoy the fruits of his labours. Merv McGuire left in his absence a gaping hole in angling advocacy that probably will never be filled. I also had the privilege of guiding Merv onto his first trout on a fly, and teaching him fly fishing, and had the pleasure of his company on several outings. Goodbye and thank you Merv, you certainly left a very positive and tangible legacy.

19.01.2022 The week prior to the release of Melbournians from their long lockdown, I spent on the Goulburn looking for trout. The Tuesday and Wednesday were great , lots of termites and March Browns on the water. Had a frustrating evening first day because due to the huge numbers of caddis on the water, it appeared that the trout were on them. Certainly the rises indicated it, but just as the darkness got to the point where it was too dark to see if the fly was taken, I realised th...ey were actually eating termites. There'd been a heap around during the morning, but they'd not appeared until late evening. That was when I started seeing large trout coming bodily out of the water only a few metres from the bank. Couldn't get a take on any of the 4 caddis varieties I tried. Then once I tied on a termite, couldn't see the takes. So next morning tied up half a dozen termites in different formats and set forth. Didn't see another termite all day until just on dark, and couldn't entice a 'memory take' at all. But duns became numerous so there plenty of surface activity up til 3pm. Total 2-day catch was 11, mostly 14" and under, but did hook a ripper Rainbow only a foot off the bank on a shaving brush emerged, but wasn't hooked properly and came off after a quick aerial display. Didn't get any pics as my phone had gone for a swim on day 1 and was drying out on the car dashboard. A strong cold front arrived next morning and that was largely that as far as surface activity was concerned. Didn't see any rises til Friday but pulled out 2 nice fat Rainbows above the rock barrage at Point Hill, they weren't rising but both came up to a drifted Gum Beetle. Hooked & dropped 2 more. Went back downstream to the Acheron confluence and got 2 more on a swung beadhead nymph, 13" & 17" Browns. Not a spectacular visit but satisfying nonetheless. Made a new frog pattern, foam with a dubbing belly and a little lead at the bend to make it float like the real thing, ie: bum-down at an angle. Hope all the Melbourne-based anglers, hunters and others enjoyed their first trip anywhere for months, and very glad the weather was good for you.

19.01.2022 Goulburn River went from 125mgl/day on Monday to 400mgl Monday night, to 2,000mgl last night. Still very turbid, but hopefully should clear in a day or so. Nearby creeks are still carrying a lot of water too. Fishing has been so-so, some good surface activity on dark. Still the odd hatchery pig hanging around.

19.01.2022 What's the definition of frustration? Buying 4 x 100-packs of Daiichi 1740 up-eye hooks & seperating out 25 of each size to put into your car tying kit, and then losing the remaining 4 x 75 hooks ..... doing my head in! Searched every possible container, hook box, nook and cranny in both the office and the kit to no avail ... ... It's possible they may have been dropped in the back of the Landcruiser but unlikely ... looks like another hook order looming.

18.01.2022 With a new trout stream season a couple of months away here in Victoria, it's worth reposting this piece of important fish-handling information ...

17.01.2022 FOR SALE Japanese Legs $5 for a pack of 40 posted anywhere in Australia. (Multiple packs can be posted for this price) Available in Black, White, Yellow, Green, Grey, Red.... Also Magnum Legs 30/pack same price, for bigger flies. See more

16.01.2022 Some fun twigwater to play in ...

15.01.2022 Wow that was some of the best action I've had on the Goly for a while - 4 Browns inside 30mins, all on a foam bead March Brown emerger. The last one was the best one, about 20", took me into the backing just when I thought he was ready to net. Then just as I was leading him to the shore the fly fell out when he flipped one last time. At least I didn't have to handle him. The 3 others all a similar size, 13-15". Looks like the hatch is pretty much over now, only an odd rise here & there.

13.01.2022 FOR SALE FLY LIFE magazines x 11 Issues 1 to 8, 15 and 18 Plus an extra of 6.... Some slight moisture rippling to lower RH corner of 1-8 but not bad, no pages stuck together or anything. $50.00 Pickup COWES VIC Or postage extra

13.01.2022 Only 8 more sleeps until Victorian trout streams are open once again ... for those fortunate enough to be able to access them atm ... which will be not very many I'm tipping. (pic: Yarra River at Warburton around 1900)

13.01.2022 LARGE QUANTITY OF SALTWATER FL TYING MATERIALS FOR SALE Who would be interested in a large quantity of saltwater fly tying materials? The relative of a friend recently decided he can no longer effectively tie flies due to age and has offered his cache for sale. I assisted in sorting through the pile so have a good idea what's there.... The majority of the items have never been opened, some have been. Approx. 40 bucktails, various colours. Approx. 100 packs of synthetic hairs (Neer Hair, Streamer Hair, Slinky Fibre, etc) Approx. 30 capes & saddles, colours typical of saltwater flies, mix of Hoffman/Whiting, Metz, Keough, etc. Assortment of chenilles, sparkle chenilles, yarns. Large quantity of Flashabou and similar products. Approx. 1 doz. calf tails, various colours. Dumbbell eyes, stick-on eyes, plastic eyes, rattles, Large quantity of marabou, various colours. 11.01.2022 A classic self-isolation move ... opened a container of glass beads and when I turned to grab tweezers the lot went belly-up .... so that's been my time-eater for a couple of hours ...

11.01.2022 A quiet wet afternoon of tying terrestrials ... ants and beetles today

10.01.2022 I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing last week of one of Australia's most innovative and skilled fly tiers, Rick Keam. I first met Rick in 1989, at a fishing- related event. He impressed me immediately. Keenly interested in what other anglers were doing, always generous with his time and extensive knowledge, but at the same time protective of his own innovations, because that was where he was driving some of his income from. Over the years we exchanged many letters,... usually long and very detailed exchanges on fly design and fishing methods, fishing politics, and often finishing with the warning to 'keep this under your hat mate'. Rick liked to play his cards close to his chest most of the time. Later I learned of his songwriting skills but never heard him play any of them. Rick battled Meniere's Disease for the latter part of his life, but you'd never know it just by speaking with him. I hadn't seen him at all in the last 15 years, but now & then one of us would call the other just to touch base. My last conversation with him was in 2017. Rest in peace Rick, goodness knows you deserve to after how much you struggled. You've earned yourself a worthy place in the fly fishing annals of Australia. (Pics borrowed from another post)

08.01.2022 Playing around with cicadas for next summer ...

07.01.2022 My first fly tying vise ... made it in my first year of high school during metalwork class ... melted some wheel balancing weights down for the base, the frame from 1" x 1/8" strap, the jaws of 3/8" x 3/8" square rod. Served me well until I could afford my first proper vise, a Veniard Cranbrook which I still have.

05.01.2022 Vale Bob Roles. Victorian trout fishing lost another prominent identity last Friday with the passing of Bob Roles. Most younger anglers won't be familiar with the name and probably won't know that Bob partnered with Jimmy Allen in the 1960s to open R W Roles & J H Allen at 203 Spring St, Melbourne. ... He later sold his share in the business to Jim who moved on to 19 McKillop St under the new banner of 'The Compleat Angler'. In his later years Bob spent most of fishing time educating the trout of the Swampy Plains and Geehi Rivers, headquartered in Khancoban. I first met Bob at the Roles & Allen shop in the early 60s after making the train trip from Nagambie expressly to wander that fly fishing wonderland and 'window shop' for hours, then make my way back to Spencer St station with a few flies in my pocket. A long way to go for a few flies, but as a young tyro fly fisher, it was a world of wonder - all the stuff I had read about, imagined, seen pictures of, was standing in rod racks or sitting behind glass or on shelves. Both Bob and Jim were enthusiastic to assist anyone in the earlier learning stages so it was never a wasted trip. A life well lived.

05.01.2022 FOR SALE - PRINTS SOLD, FRAMED PRINT STILL AVAILABLE Some fly fishing history - 2 Limited Edition Merlin Cunliffe Brown Trout prints from the 1988 World Fly Fishing Championships held in Tasmania. Numbered 56/100 and 64/100, of only 100 printed, these are a large mural-size print and worthy of a place on the wall in any serious fly fisherman's home.... The size is (unmounted) 900 x 600 $125 plus post & packing. I also have a slightly different one fully mounted and framed. This one is a little rarer, one of a tiny handful of prints done before the 1988 World Champs limited edition prints were done. The caption reads simply 'Brown Trout'. $300 for this one (Framing and mounting cost $180 back then) PM me if interested. (I listed the two prints previously but someone who said they'd take both never followed through, after asking me to post them as sold, so this time it's money first)

05.01.2022 An interesting afternoon ... first it was March Brown duns, then it was cinnamon micro caddis, then Rusty Duns, then rain. When the rain stopped, a few fish were back on the MB duns again. This bloke was the perfect end to the day -,a wild Goulburn River rainbow. He slurped down that #14 foam bead nymph nicely. Jumped 6 times and put on a real show. A lovely reminder of my early years on the fly fishing around Seymour with mates, wagging school, the standard fare being plentiful plump rainbows that rose to just about any terrestrial dry. He'll be a nice fish once he's put on a bit more weight before Xmas.

04.01.2022 ANGLER: Someone who invests years of practice, thousands of dollars on tackle & equipment, countless hours tying flies, and thousands of kilometres behind the wheel .... to catch a fish that, in the end, he safely releases back into the water.

04.01.2022 Shann Low, Todd's Corner ...

03.01.2022 Sitting in my vehicle atop an out-of-the-way hill in the bush near Jindabyne in NSW, tying stick caddis in 3 colours (dark brown, green and grass) for use in a couple of hours. After the stick caddis I'll do a few yabbies, then some midge pupae. It's been tough fishing all week. Yesterday in particular - flat mirror calm, crystal clear water and spooky fish.... I fished from a kneeling or sitting position for 4 hours without success, only a few close follows but in spite of my best efforts, no takes. I could easily see medium to large trout rising constantly to a no-see-um, mostly within a metre of the weed edge. And they could see me just as easily. It was all very Tasmanian really. Several times after spotting large fish sitting stationary over the bottom in a couple of feet depth, I cast a metre and a half to one side only for them to bolt the moment the line touched water. Midge flies of every description, caddis pupa, stick caddis, emerging duns - even a big Woolly Bugger as a final last resort just before dark. Nothing passed their intense scrutiny. I even changed down to a new 12ft 4lb leader. Nope. But in spite of the frustration, I had a great afternoon. Today, wind to 20kn with partial cloud, a build-up to a more windy and rainy day tomorrow. Today I will catch trout. Tomorrow I will catch more trout. Then I will drive home with a smile you won't remove with a jackhammer.

03.01.2022 It's almost that time of year again ....

03.01.2022 March Brown duns coming off in these ideal conditions. Trout are spooky though. Seen a few right in close in very shallow water, fins and tails showing.

01.01.2022 Recycling fly hooks ... over a summer my hat tends to accumulate a few victims of trout's teeth, mangled in the tussle ... a few patterns figure more prominently than others ... my foam-bodied Kozzy Dun, Royal Wulff, deerhair-bodied spinners ... one in particular definitely won't survive. I recently reclaimed 36 hooks for re-use doing this, today will add another 30 maybe ... Not that I'm even close to being short of hooks, especially since I think I've bought around 2500 t...his season already. Fly junkie? Maybe ....

01.01.2022 Goulburn River was at 125mgl/day on Monday. Tuesday 400mgl/day. Wednesday 2,000 mgl/day. Now on Thursday they've dropped it back to 1,000mgl/day. WTF are they doing? ... This is the sort of bullcrap that destroys aquatic invertebrates, not to mention the fishing. See more
