21.01.2022 Why we love local? Local materials helps express local identity Local materials support regional skills and traditions... Local materials have less embodied energy from transport. Local materials are often easier to repair and maintain. Local materials boost local economies... And most importantly Local materials connect you to the resources around you. You become one with your environment..... And this has been the foundation of sustainable societies.... Like forever. - BUILD WITH WHAT YOU'VE GOT.

21.01.2022 Only a few days till the @deezen.offical awards shortlists and a few months till the @thedesignfiles awards We’re super proud that #wasteterrazzo is being so well received. Thanks everyone for the love and for helping us divert over 11 tons of construction waste this year (and rising) -

20.01.2022 Sundays spent meandering between the Northey Street Markets and Farm via the newly established pocket park. The redevelopment of the Northey Street bathroom precinct is seen as the opportunity to open up the mouth of the farm, and create spaces to dwell under the canopy of existing trees. - -

19.01.2022 Levelling off at #jellway_threehouse - We’re mounting a permanent Waste Terrazzo on a sloped paved landscape with a surrounding cluster of Telegraph Stools. -

18.01.2022 Revisiting our images of the concrete at #Arcosanti, an experimental development in the Arizona desert with buildings conceived by the late theoretical architect, Paolo Soleri. - Text via @arcosanti_arizona Using an earth-casting method where concrete was poured over the earth, taking its shape from the contours of the land, Soleri created the unique and provocative structures and dwellings at Cosanti. Sometimes, soil was intentionally mounded or colored with added cement p...igments. Once the concrete had cured, the soil was excavated out from the concrete shell. Evocative of Grecian and Egyptian structures from the ancient world, or alluding to those seen in movies set in a time long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away, Cosanti’s experimental architecture has a beguiling otherworldliness. Where most builders today would build a building from the ground up, Soleri built his structures from the roof down. Many of Soleri’s structures at Cosanti are built below ground level and surrounded by mounds of earth, acting as natural insulation to better moderate the dwellings’ interior temperatures. The Dome House (1949) in Cave Creek Arizona was the first of Soleri’s semi-subterranean projects. - - - Five Mile Radius visited @arcosanti_arizona in 2017 as part of a fellowship into rural building awarded by the @gaf_community @issinstitute

17.01.2022 First shots of #fmrhikkaduwa, pro bono pavilion designed last year along with 12 students for @griffith_architecture. This is our first building using compressed earth block, sourced from a backyard factory in Central Sri Lanka. Covid delayed construction onsite however the roof is now on and the interiors well underway!.

14.01.2022 Brisbane’s new street furniture, made from waste We partnered with the @brisbanecitycouncil to reimagine the manufacturing of their ‘urban stools’ so they could be entirely made from waste concrete. All our concrete was sourced as over pour from construction sites in brisbane. There are now five of these at the Sunnybank Village Precinct Project. ... Big love BCC. We’re thinking all new concrete street furniture in Brisbane should follow suit ? @brisbanecity council @sunnybankvillage #sunnybankvillage #Brisbane #viewsofbrisbane Brisbane City Council (2021) The artwork (text inlay and gobo projection ) is part of the series Journey to Oasis (2020) by Sebastian Moody.

06.01.2022 FREE THE TREE - New design work for @northeystreetcityfarm . The removal of an existing public bathroom makes space for a new larger facility to the east while creating a tree lined concourse into the farm. The entrance connects to the new Windsor Park opposite. Established trees, currently shielded by the existing bathroom fence, are released, with new public and private spaces offering a multitude of ways to experience the tree. @ Northey Street City Farm

05.01.2022 We get a few questions..... - Our name is taken from a challenge set by the great Indian ledge Mahatma Gandhi. Understanding the social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits, he asked his countrymen to build from materials found within a ‘five mile radius’ of their homes. As young architects trained in commercial studios, we were used to specifying materials from all over the world. When we first heard Gandhi’s simple ethos... it was actually kind of mind blowing..... We realise that five mile’s within the density of India is very different from the five mile’s within the expanse of Australia. The goal of Five Mile Radius is simply to explore the premise, using an area’s resources and traditions as a driver for design. Materials might not come from within five miles but they certainly don’t need to come from within 5000. #buildwithwhatyougot #golocal #metricsystem

01.01.2022 Did ya know ~~ Concrete is the most widely used substance on Earth after water. ~~If the cements industry were a country, it would be the third largest carbon dioxide emitter surpassed only by China and the US. ~~ Concrete uses almost a 10th of the world’s industrial water use -... As architects, we understand how important concrete is to sheltering mankind however we also know we require innovation at every step of the supply chain. - The concrete in our Waste Terrazzo is sourced from building sites when more wet concrete is supplied than required. At present, builders often have no choice but to dump this excess on site or into landfill. We’re working on ways to scale up this approach, to divert more concrete from landfill and make sure we use every last drop! See more
