23.01.2022 Does anyone have a Winter puppy? Days like today provide a great opportunity to reduce the chance of thunderstorm phobias. When ever the bad weather hits seize the moment to have a super fun filled play sesh with your puppy, a chasey game or ball game perhaps or start one of your positive reward based training sessions! Sit, Stay, Down, Come! Its a nice distraction and fun for your puppy so the next time a storm hits your puppy will have nothing to worry about...

17.01.2022 Is this cold and dreary weather affecting you or your animals? Arthritis in cats is typically part of the ageing process. As cats get older, degeneration of the joints can cause pain and inflammation. Cats are very good at hiding any illness or pain. Have you noticed any of the symptoms shown in the picture? Come and see us so we can discuss some treatment options to ensure your cat is not in any pain

17.01.2022 Did you know that worming treatments don't prevent worms or future infestations they only kill worms present at the time of dosing. This is why we recommend worming every 3 months, especially if there are small children around.

17.01.2022 This time of the year we get a lot of enquiries about baby birds. Here is a nice little illustration to show what to do if you find a nestling or a fledgling on the ground. By doing this you will hopefully keep the baby birds under the care of their doting parents.

17.01.2022 Be careful guys, they are out and about! We have already had a couple of close calls... Consider altering your walking route away from long grasses and bushland.

16.01.2022 Hahaha, anyone else have this problem? :-)

15.01.2022 Did you know that worming treatments dont prevent worms or future infestations they only kill worms present at the time of dosing. This is why we recommend worming every 3 months, especially if there are small children around.

14.01.2022 Feeding grain free food to dogs with allergies or intolerances has grown in popularity, it is important to remember that this isnt the whole solution. Most dogs with food allergies are reacting to animal based proteins such as chicken or beef as well as plant based proteins like wheat. Gluten free grains such as sorghum are tolerated well by most dogs. If you want to feed your dog a hypoallergenic diet remember you must look at the meat source as well as the grains.

13.01.2022 Have you ever thought about cat bowl etiquette? Here are a few tips! Generally speaking cats dont like their wet and dry food mixed together. Cats also prefer their water bowls to be completely separate from their food. In multi-cat households cats generally prefer to have their bowls spread apart rather than communal feeding.... Bowls need to be the right size, not too big if you have a kitten or teeny weeny cat and not too small so as not to squish their whiskers. Glass, ceramic and stainless steel is preferred over plastic. Definitely dont place bowls near their litter tray, cats need to eat in a safe, quiet place away from where they eliminate. In the wild their eliminations attract predators so they need to flee the scene immediately and cant risk hanging around to eat their dinner. Every cat is an individual and there is always exceptions to the rule, this is just some food for though... See more

12.01.2022 This is a fantastic product! The Feliway diffuser is a plug-in device that circulates a synthetic feline facial pheromone throughout your house... It is fantastic for our stressed out feline friends, whether it be due to renovations, moving house, a new baby, overseas visitors or even a new cat in the neighbourhood this pheromone makes your cat feel at ease... It can help with scratching furniture, inappropriate urinating/spraying, hiding and nocturnal activity... Keep it in mind if your cat is showing some undesirable behaviour!

11.01.2022 We have a new and exciting arthritis medication now in stock. Antinol is a soft gel capsule which contains a molecule extracted from the New Zealand green lipped muscle. Antinol is a natural potent anti-inflammatory that is proving great for treating joint pain associated with arthritis. It is safe to use with other medications and is safe to use long term with no adverse effects on the kidneys or liver. Ask one of our veterinarians about Antinol next time you are in.

09.01.2022 Hi all. This lovely Pink and Grey Galah was found on Tuesday night on Kathleen Street in Bassendean... He is tame and very friendly, please spread the word we are desperate to find his owner as we cant keep him here at the clinic...

09.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all our lovely clients and patients. We hope you are enjoying a well deserved break over the festive season. We will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day otherwise we will be open our normal hours. Shout out to our model Indiana Bones who belongs to Dr Holly, as you can see she is taking her job as Christmas elf very seriously this year. :-)

06.01.2022 We have a new range of Single Protein Diet (SPD) dog rolls in stock. They are a great accompaniment to any hypoallergenic biscuit. We currently stock crocodile and tapioca, kangaroo and sweet potato and chicken and brown rice with a salmon variety to be available soon.

06.01.2022 With the festive season fast approaching bouquets of flowers are aplenty. We must remember that lilies, although beautiful, can be toxic cats. Commonly cats can brush up against lilies and get pollen on their coats which they then groom off. Ingesting lilies or the pollen can cause kidney damage with the cats showing symptoms like lethargy, inappetance or vomiting. So, enjoy your flowers but keep them out of reach from our feline friends :-)

06.01.2022 We have acquired a new garden ornament this morning... Isnt he handsome!

03.01.2022 Hello to all our valued clients, We would like to inform you that we will be switching to the NBN over the course of the next fortnight. During this time you may experience some trouble getting through to us as we will be temporarily dropping to one phone line. If you try to call and get an engaged tone please keep persevering and we will endeavour to answer your call as promptly as possible. If despite your best efforts you still cant reach as by phone please e-mail us at [email protected] OR know that we are consulting as per usual during the following hours and you can come down without an appointment. Monday - Friday 9-11am AND 4-6pm Saturday 9-11am Sunday 9-12pm Thank you for your patience with us as we make this transition. Bassendean Veterinary Hospital Team

03.01.2022 Did you know there is a preferred way to say hello to our feline friends when we are meeting them for the first time? Firstly let the cat come to you in their own time, once they are close enough extend out your pointer finger (think E.T phone home) and watch the cat first sniff the tip of your finger then watch the cat rub your finger down their cheek. You are now officially friends! (at the cats discretion of course!)

03.01.2022 We have seen quite a few cases of kennel cough recently. Kennel cough is a virus or bacterial infection dogs can get from being exposed to airborne contaminants in the environment put there by other infected dogs. Your dog doesnt need to be in a kennel to contract kennel cough. Your dog will start to cough 5-7 days after exposure and can continue to cough for 7-14 days, it is important to keep your dog at home and isolated during this time. If your dog is coughing but otherw...ise well we normally let the virus run its course and sometimes use cough suppressants. If your dog is lethargic, off their food and their cough is particularly debilitating they may have a secondary bacterial infection in which case antibiotics and anti-inflammatories may be helpful. As kennel cough is caused by multiple viruses and bacterium even vaccinated dogs can contract kennel cough however it is normally less severe and they normally recover far quicker than unvaccinated dogs. Please call us if your dog is coughing and we can advise you further. See more

02.01.2022 Hello to all our valued clients and patients we hope you are all keeping well. We just want to let you know that we are still consulting as normal and have no plans to close. We have made a few minor changes in order to adhere to the social distancing rules. Please let us know when you are at the clinic either in person or by phone and we will ask that you wait in your car or outside, a nurse/vet will come and get you when it is your turn. Due to our limited space we can on...ly have one person in the consult room with the vet per visit and we must try and keep contact time to a minimum. So far we have had no disruption to the supply of prescription medications. If you have any concerns or questions please dont hesitate to call us on 9378 3999. Stay safe! See more
