06.01.2022 PEST AND DISEASE Difference btw insecticide: GENERIC INSECTICIDE ... Generic insecticide work as contact insecticide whic means they have to be applied directly on the insect or on the leaves in order to get ingested by the insect and start acting ; Most common generic insecticide are horticultural oils ( eco-oil, white oil etc..) Those types of oils are design to obstruct the tiny holes the insect use as respiratory system in order to kill them ; There is a generic and common misconception around horticultural oils : despite the fact the labels say they treat a particular pest ( white wax scale for instance ), they often don’t specify at which stage of the lifecycle of the insect they actually need to be applied in order to work : treating your lemon tree for citrus leaf miner or white scale once the leaves show presence of the insect is pointless ! Leaf miner is a tiny caterpillar leaving in between the leaves layers so any oil sprayed on top of the leaves won’t penetrate the leaves and won’t reach the pest ; White wax scale when reached the stage of been visible ( waxy balls ) are adults and they’ve already put a shell or cover on top so again any oil is applied on top of the insect won’t kill the insect. SO WHY HORTICULTURAL OILS ARE CLAIMED TO TREAT LEAF MINER OR WHITE WAX SCALE ? The answer is simple : they need to be applied as a preventive measure in order to treat the insect at the nymph stage ( baby ) or crowler stage before the scale will put his cover on ! PREVENTION IS BEETER THAN CURE ! So spraying oils on white scale is a waste of time and money .... SYSTEMIC INSECTICIDE ( like Confidor)on the other hand get absorbed by any part of the plants and they travel through the vascular system of the plants so when the insect attack the plants and they start eating the leaves of any other part of the plants , they will get poisoned ingesting the insecticide. That’s why is not adviced to apply systemic insecticide on flowering plants ( it will kill the bees ) . So if you really have to apply systemic insecticide, don’t let the plant flower ....

Andrea has years of experience working in gardens in Italy and Sydney and provides a range of professional horticultural services beyond the standard lawn mowing and hedging. Andrea is Italian, and like Italians are passionate about soccer, Andrea is passionate about plants! Andrea’s connection with gardens started early on being second generation of a horticulturist family.... His oldest uncle was the principal of the most recognized Italian Horticultural school in Stresa (Lake Maggiore). His other two uncles both graduated from the Italian Horticultural School and started a Horticultural and Landscaping business around Lake Maggiore and Lake Como where they maintained some of the most formal and heritage gardens in history such as Giardini Borromeo at the Isola Bella of Lake Maggiore. From a young age, Andrea worked with the family business and developed a strong passion and knowledge of plants. Once Andrea moved to Sydney, he soon realised Sydney was the perfect place to create and maintain beautiful gardens. After graduating at TAFE Ryde Horticultural school, Andrea received the Highest Achiever Award thanks to his perfect score in all Plant Units. Focal Point Gardens was born with the idea of promoting and educating his clients towards having a holistic approach towards their garden: a garden is not just lawn mowing and hedging! We are passionate about plants and transforming a simple outdoor space into a garden that people are engaged with and proud to be in.
