24.01.2022 The grave of the famous ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev in the cemetery was called the Russian cemetery in Paris. The carpet that covers the tomb is not a carpet, but a tombstone of small mosaics.

20.01.2022 The Hardy Tree. Inside the ancient churchyard of St Pancras, behind the small church, is this. The story goes that during the 1860's, when the Midland Railway l...ine was built over the original St Pancras Churchyard, an Architect named Blomfield was commisioned to exhume the human remains and dismantle the tombs. Being a rather unpleasant task, he passed the job onto his young protégé, Thomas Hardy (who in the following years would go on to become the renound novelist). Hardy is credited as having had the idea to place the remaining headstones in a pattern around an ash tree at the back of the churchyard. In the years since the trunk has absorbed many of the headstones, welding life and death in a bizarre but beautfiful way. See more

20.01.2022 Even though the Williamstown Cemetery has been closed to visitors, GMCT is quietly working behind the fences. As part of the maintenance plan there are a numb...er of works planned for Williamstown Cemetery in 2020. Some of these have already taken place including tree planting along Champion Road. The various cemetery improvement works are as follows: Drainage improvements to C of E section, adjacent to Champion Road Road works to match the current road following the drainage improvements Reroute of electricity and communications underground and removal of an onsite pole to improve the aesthetics of the cemetery Tree removals next to derelict caretaker’s house Demolition of the derelict caretaker’s house. Let’s hope the improved drainage means we will see less mud around the walkways

19.01.2022 There's more than a touch of the Irish at the Yambuk Cemetery with names on the headstones such as O'Shannesy, Ryan and Maloney hailing from the likes of Limeri...ck, Tipperary, and Clare. I have written one post for Western District Families on the Yambuk Cemetery and you can read it on the link https://westerndistrictfamilies.com//03/02/yambuk-cemetery/ Another one is very close to being finished but I doubt I'll manage to get it out by the end of the year. 07.01.2022 The Friends of Cheltenham Cemeteries are pleased to let all of our Facebook friends know of a book which has been researched and written by a member of our Cheltenham Friends group. It is a disturbing true story about a young school girl who was murdered in Melbourne, in 1930. She is buried in Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery. Katherine Kovacic is a published author and has written fictional novels, which are fabulous reads, and I am sure this book will be an extraordinary, c...hilling, but compelling read. The Schoolgirl Strangler Katherine Kovacic AUD $32.99 Allen & Unwin This is the shocking true story of a serial killer in 1930s Melbourne. November, 1930. One sunny Saturday afternoon, 12-year-old Mena Griffiths was playing in the park when she was lured away by an unknown man. Hours later, her strangled body was found, mouth gagged and hands crossed over her chest, in an abandoned house. Only months later, another girl was murdered; the similarities between the cases undeniable. Crime in Melbourne had taken a shocking new turn: this was the work of a serial killer, a homicidal maniac. Despite their best efforts, police had no experience dealing with this kind of criminal. What followed was years of bungled investigations, falsely accused men - and the tragic deaths of two more girls - before the murderer was finally caught and brought to justice. With all the pace of a thriller, Katherine Kovacic recounts this extraordinary, chilling true story - of failed police enquiries, a killer with a Jekyll and Hyde personality, and the families shattered when four innocent lives were cruelly taken.

06.01.2022 Funeral cards, also known as memorial cards or mourning cards, became popular during the Victorian era. Rather than inviting people to attend a funeral for the ...deceased, they were given to family and friends in remembrance of the deceased. Cards from that era will normally contain the vital statistics pertaining to the deceased, along with symbols and poems, sometimes a brief obituary and location and time of the funeral. Most of these were printed on card-stock. See more

05.01.2022 The Smythesdale Cemetery Trust would like to make contact with any descendants of Ellen and Richard Gilhooley who lived in Wills St, Smythesdale in the 1800’s. ...Ellen (died 1887) and three children are buried in the oldest section of the cemetery with a brick monument. Richard was a brick layer so we assume he did the work himself. This is the oldest monument in the cemetery and it is in some urgent need of some TLC. The Trust would like to contact their descendants to discuss what can or should be done to ensure that this monument receives the necessary restoration. Please contact the Trust Secretary [email protected] or 0408 428 855 if you are descendants of the Gilhooly family or have information about how they may be contacted.
