25.01.2022 Axle coming out yesterday. Spacer on left side caused some grief binding where keyway had caused some deformation until some heat was applied to the spacer!

25.01.2022 Tracey has decided to sleep outside to raise money for the homeless - you can support her by donating to help others keep warm. The Foden isn’t going to be ready to keep her warm - so she will be doing the real deal this time! Chris might take her out a cup of tea!

23.01.2022 I'm replacing whole tube sheet. Why wouldn't you when she's so accessible. I can punch tube bores with magnetic broach after welding with ease. Drilling int...o welds is permissible with NTD testing and great for die penetration right to root centerline anyways. Owner and inspector in agreement. Happy days ahead. See more

20.01.2022 A bunch of Blokes enjoying some hands on work on the Foden this weekend.

16.01.2022 Some shots of the Fodens trip through Launceston in 1958 taken from slides in Peter Martins collection.

15.01.2022 GOOD NEWS STORY #18 Sheffield Steam & Heritage Centre Sheffield Steam & Heritage Centre have been slowly working away at the installation of the Dulverton Plat...form. It looks a bit of a mess now, but they're sure it will look spectacular soon! The below photo shows the first passenger train to stop at the Dulverton Station in many years albeit in a temporary location. Howard Mulvey who rescued the station from Dulverton and took it to Lorinna was fireman for the day with driver Peter Martin. Brenton Wheare who is our guard gives the green flag! (The photo was taken before COVID-19 social distancing.) "The station will be positioned on the north east corner of our grounds on an island platform which will allow two trains to pass at the station on the busy weekends," said Mr Chris Martin, Chairman of Sheffield Steam & Heritage Centre. "My wife’s family the Coles, managed the station in the TGR days at Dulverton when it was the Post Office, so it wonderful to preserve this piece of family history and for it to return to being an important part of our community," said Mr Martin.

14.01.2022 GOOD NEWS STORY #19 Foden Traction Engine Built in 1907 being restored to return to Sheffield. Brothers Vivian and Chris Martin are funding the major overhaul o...n Foden No 1264. The Foden was purchased new in 1907 by the Ingram brothers and Lamprey family from Sassafras where it worked until 1928. The Foden then changed owners several times over the years from the Von Stieglitz and Bower families, Beulah, to Mr Murfet, Sheffield and then Bernie Marshal who used it in a sawmill in Lorinna. Then engine sat idly for a number of years at the sawmill until it burn down. The Foden was then purchased by Peter Martin and driven out of Lorinna to Lilydale over a number of days in 1958. Unfortunately, within a week of the initial inspection and the engine being driven out of Lorinna, the makers plates were stolen. Peter acquired a new set of plates off a mainland Foden No 554 which was thought to be destined to be scrapped. Years later it was restored, and the attached photo shows the original plates being returned to it in 2017. Well known Tasmanian boilermaker Michael Howe from Penguin has commenced replacing the Foden’s boiler barrel and sections of plate around the firebox so that the engine, which is one of only 25 Foden traction engines in Tasmania, can return to steam when it will become a regular at future SteamFests.

10.01.2022 Progress. Mick Williams, Nigel Fish, Peter, Chris and Alex hard at work today. Once the welding is done, they will be ready for vulcanising interstate. The front wheels have been knocked back into shape, and her boiler is up north, so she is still in pieces but looking good so far.

08.01.2022 Tasmania: Our state is getting a weekly rural newspaper! The team that produced Tasmanian Country for a combined 27 years are proud to present the next chapter ...in Tasmanian regional journalism: www.islandcountry.com.au. We appreciate your patience while we worked in the background to bring this to fruition. Please like, share, and comment, to spread the word to as many Tasmanians as we can!

06.01.2022 Work has begun on the Foden . Had fun freeing cylinder block from boiler .Two steam uptake ports were not keen to leave barrel. The barrel came out nicely from ...throat plate. Now comes the cancer surgery on backhead and throat plate bottom. I like to replace plate right down to foundation ring and re rivet. It is a much stronger repair and worth the effort See more

04.01.2022 This is the bunch of blokes!

04.01.2022 Chris did some digging on the history of the Foden this week, after he spent the weekend getting the points ready for the Dulverton station at Sheffield, he went through the Dept Labour and Industry records, and discovered a R. Murfet owned the engine, between 1949-1953. My great grandfather, Ray Murfet, and his wife Nina Murfet ran the Dulverton store, were rail station manager and postmistress. So we spent some time with my uncles writing memories of Dulverton Days - but we are still looking for the picture of the Foden next to the station!

01.01.2022 Peter has been busy turning the new cylinder block bolts. They need to longer than the old set to go through the new welded barrel which is one plate thickness smaller in diameter. A few of the new bolts are centre of the picture.
