22.01.2022 Thank you Wild2Free Inc. - Kangaroo Sanctuary and I hope this helps with reducing the time spent collecting foliage for #kangaroos

22.01.2022 The first solar powered Foliagenator built is working hard at Whites Creeks Nursery for the equally hard working Wires Inner West Branch, Sydney. What’s it been doing: Animal breakfasts X 365 days of crunchy nutritional goodness. ... With human breakfast cereals, crunchy doesn’t always mean nutritious. Preserving crispy freshness for animals is very important as the more they consume, the quicker they can be released. Inside the Foliagenator, the foliage is constantly hydrated with the sticks sitting in filtered water, the leaves and shoots sprinkled hourly. 18.01.2022 A Big Thank you. Species of Australian wildlife have very specific food needs. For instance the endangered Greater Glider eats nothing other than blossom and le...aves of particular eucalypt, angophora and casuarina trees, which can be difficult for wildlife carers to source. A wide variety of leaves and blossom is grown private gardens, and Nicko de Creuz, a Sydney WIRES member and inventor, developed a way to harness those garden resources to gather the specific foliage needs of each species in WIRES care, and to keep if fresh. He invented the Foliagenator, https://foliagenator.com.au/ ,a simple but ingenious solar battery operated machine to water the stored foliage every hour, keeping it fresh and palatable for five or six days and sometimes longer. After 80% of our region and its tree canopies was incinerated by the Currowan fire, Nicko responded by providing a Foliagenator, and delivered it to the Shoalhaven Wildlife Stations in Berry. This enabled donations of wide varieties of blossom and foliage from private gardens and farms in Berry to be gathered for distribution in burnt areas in the south coast and Kangaroo Valley. Local wildlife refuges also wanted the foliage. The Shoalhaven Bat Clinic took large quantities of the donated fresh mulberry leaves and eucalypt blossom, which is food for their rehabilitating flying foxes, and a macropod rehabilitation refuge in Wandandian, which had been impacted by the fires, took leaves for their wallabies. The Covid virus lock down brought operating and location changes for the local wildlife operations. The donations from the Berry gardeners could no longer be collected, and the Foliagenator is now in Sydney with a wildlife group there. Thank you to those generous Berry gardeners who donated abundant blossom and foliage, and to Nicko for lending us the Foliagenator at the most urgent time for our wildlife groups. It is a brilliant invention and no doubt will be widely used in future emergencies, for which lessons learnt since the Currowan fire will guide the development of a blueprint for meeting the specific needs of our wildlife species. 18.01.2022 Thank you so much for the kind comments and support. Thanks South Oakleigh Wildlife Shelter and Michelle Phillips for your hospitality. It was wonderful to meet you and I admire your commitment to our native animals.

09.01.2022 Here’s some possums enjoying some ‘crunchy fresh foliage from the Foliagenator.’ Try and repeat that five times quickly. https://foliagenator.com.au/

08.01.2022 I did an experiment the other day with my Foliagenator. As turnover of foliage is quite high at most carers’ places, I’d never really got to see just how long it COULD last. A branch after 13 days in the Foliagenator. This Lillipilly is sprouting! To be honest I am surprised myself. Most of the flowers are still in tact too. How tasty would that be for a folivore.

07.01.2022 So Foliagenator number 1 is up and running, check it out, all full of beautiful browse for the possums, gliders, kangaroos and birds that we have in care. See c...omments for videos. Thanks again Wildlife Victoria for funding these for us and thanks to Nicko & Molly for supplying and delivering them. See more
