22.01.2022 #foolscap10years White Rabbit Barrel Hall, 2015 .. .. 'Fermentation with Imagination' is the mantra of Victorian boutique craft beer producer, White Rabbit, sister brewery of Little Creatures. In 2015, we were approached to design a barrel hall that echoed the brand’s love of continual experimentation, following the relocation of their entire brewery from Healesville to Geelong's Little Creatures Village. ..... .. Our response was to design a space of comfort reminiscent of an inventor’s workshop, set deep in the forest, where the quiet hum of the distillery and enjoyment of a cooling ale go hand-in-hand. Situated in a former wool mill, White Rabbit Barrel Hall capitalises on the industrial beauty and generous volume of its historical red brick building. The project also builds on a place strategy, developed by Foolscap and @relativeprojects to enliven the precinct. .. .. The centrepiece of the ‘watering hole’ zone is the seven metre bar, made by Kyran Starcevich from a mass of charred Oregon timber beams reclaimed from the site. The space is populated with a custom designed-and-built fireplace and furniture pieces developed by us specifically for the space: chestnut bar stools; raw steel tables; and a variety of lighting pendants and fixtures. To complete the project, and achieve a comprehensive and coherent outcome, our studio also designed various extensions to the existing White Rabbit brand, including beer founts, print materials, leather-bound menus, environmental graphics, wayfinding and neon entry signage. .. .. 22.01.2022 #foolscap10years The Pond, 2009 .. The precise term 'speakeasy' can be dated to an 1837 article in the Sydney Herald newspaper, which referred to them as "sly grog shops, called in slang terms 'speakeasy's' [sic]". The article went on to describe them as "receptacles for thieves, bushrangers, and stolen property". Part restaurant, part speakeasy-style bar, and housed in a historic sandstone farmhouse, The Pond's interior celebrated this layered history and the city's famo...us architectural vernacular. Downstairs, the old cellar was converted into an intimate space for jazz bands and other live music to set the atmosphere, grounded by reclaimed carpet tiles featuring a custom bat print by @craigandkarl. The direction of the bat print replicated their flight path overhead; the bats' nightly migration was easily viewed from The Pond's courtyard on balmy Sydney evenings. .. 21.01.2022 #foolscap10years Patricia Coffee Brewers, 2011 .. When long-time hospitality veterans, Bowen Holden (ex-Seven Seeds) and Pip Heath (ex-Dead Man Espresso), decided to open a café together, they had no idea it would turn out to be one of Australia's most popular coffee destinations. Named after their respective grandmothers, who coincidentally share the same given name, Patricia Coffee Brewers embraces a classic, understated interior, inspired by standing-room-only Italian c...offee bars from the 1950s onwards. The integrated branding produced in collaboration with Beyond The Pixels features a blend of Art Deco and contemporary elements, all housed within a heritage, boom-era chambers building. .. .. One of our earliest retail projects, Vanishing Elephant Melbourne, was the Sydney-based menswear brand's first brick-and-mortar store, located in the bustling retail strip of Albert Coates Lane, QV. 20.01.2022 #foolscap10years Richmond Weekender, 2012 .. In 2012, after the success of The Doghouse in Sydney, we once again teamed up with our friends Right Angle Studio and Lendlease, activating an abandoned shell prior to its transformation into a new multi-residential development. The site was the former headquarters of GTV-9, but before this, was the purpose-built home to a piano factory. Our team created a makeshift bar and canteen, marketplace, cinema, and an alfresco barbecue ...and picnic zone (run by Fancy Hanks BBQ). These events took place every weekend over the course of a month in late summer, occupying the courtyard and several rooms inside the building. Expressing the temporal nature of the project, and the space in which it inhabited, rudimentary materials referenced ideas of construction, packing and unpacking. .. .. The Gulnura furniture suite, named after the mythical Lightning Snake, consists of a 16-seater board table, sizeable meeting table, custom credenzas and executive workstation, specially designed for the new executive zone at Melbourne Airport. Working alongside Manapan Furniture, the materials we selected ...native spotted gum timber and marble quarried in Queensland tell a unique story of place. Complemented by a saturated palette of lustrous, wattle-coloured carpet and spotted gum wall panelling, the scheme evokes a Golden Era of travel whilst recognising the site's context as an initial introduction to Australia. .. 14.01.2022 #foolscap10years Sixpenny, 2012 .. Such a pleasure to revisit the much-loved (and everlasting) Sixpenny restaurant in Sydney's inner-west. Originating in the UK, the term ‘sixpenny’ refers to the traditional 19th-century meal that could be bought for exactly that. Brought to Australia in the 1850s, it provided a simple economic meal of meat, vegetables and bread to a growing urban workforce. While the cuisine and quality of everyday dining has certainly shifted since then, ...the creators of Sixpenny Dan Puskas (ex- Tetsuya's and Marque by Mark Best) and James Parry (ex- Noma and Rockpool) wanted to celebrate this classic moment in Australian history. They came to us to refurbish a heritage building, with the idea of providing a relaxed, informal and comfortable environment for lunchtime and post-work dining. .. .. 14.01.2022 #foolscap10years Dry Land, 2010 .. Back to Sydney, where in Redfern, friend and client Roy Leibowitz realised his dream of owning and running his own small bar. .. The name 'Dry Land' was evocative of a rather nautical narrative, brought to life by using objects from Roy's vast collection of old-world curios. Cosy booths were made from bent plywood, similar to curved timbers used in boat building, with ambient lighting provided by salvaged ship's lanterns mounted on a deep... blue backdrop. Dry Land was also a reference to the nanny-state liquor bans that resulted in a somewhat deserted cultural landscape, before NSW's small bar licensing overhaul (behind which Foolscap Director Adèle was a driving force). .. 14.01.2022 #foolscap10years The Pond, 2009 .. 12.01.2022 #foolscap10years Waffee, 2014 .. 'Waffee' a fun-filled interior to reflect a rather canny portmanteau (waffles plus coffee!). The all-important display counter at Waffee's Emporium outpost was poured in-situ, using a framed mould and waterproof fabric to create waffle-like undulations. 02.01.2022 #foolscap10years Bluff Town, 2015 .. At Bluff Town, diners were able to bask in Sandringham's bayside sunlight, thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows. Positioned opposite, along an uninterrupted wall, the café's central bar referenced local geology through a striated language of salvaged timber and brass, sandwiched between layers of raw and pigmented off-form concrete. .. As part of our full design service (brand identity and interior fit-out), we selected the name ‘Blu...ff Town’ in acknowledgement of the area's old colloquial name. 'Bluff Town' referred to Sandringham’s many steep banks and naturally formed bluffs, with nods to this history still found today on historic buildings and street names nearby. Drawing on this, our team designed an elemental brandmark, featuring a geological logo and simple typeface, which was reflected across signage, packaging and business cards. .. ..
