08.01.2022 I have spent this afternoon delivering Sunflower seeds in a Christmas card to my neighbours! As part of Maroondah City Council's Be Kind Maroondah initiative, c...ommunity houses and council offices have (free) Sunflower seeds for residents and their neighbours and friends. Be Kind was begun during the Covid lockdown as a way to share kindness, keep comunities connected and give support to ourselves, to others, to businesses and neighbourhoods. Some of the initiatives have included Neighbourhood Help cards, Thank You cards and the hugely successful Knitting Project. This Sunflower Effect Project was an idea contributed by a resident who had herself harvested her sun flower seeds and distributed them to 90 of her neighbours. About 5000 seed packets have now been taken up in schools, by community groups, church groups, in aged care settings and by many activity groups. Council has planted their seeds at the Maroondah Federation Estate in Greenwood St, Ringwood. If we plant the seeds now they will grow and flower over summer and we can look forward to some lovely displays of hope in February and March. I am told that the bottom half of a plastic bottle protects the seeds from snails and that they do well in pots! The seeds are available until this Friday the 11th of December. 06.01.2022 This year, because of the pandemic, so many more people have desperately needed crisis housing support and the fantastic people at Anchor have risen to that challenge while themselves having to operate remotely from home. What an extraordinary effort - thank you, Anchor.
