21.01.2022 Psoriasis (Part 3 of 3) As far as treatment goes, the main aim is to attain remission by addressing the underlying cause of your particular Psoriasis. This will involve a lengthy interview to discuss your health history and then other signs and symptoms will help to differentiate your condition from the other 24, then a treatment plan will be discussed with you. This will generally involve 6 sessions over 2-3 weeks to see how your body responds to Acupun...cture, and a herbal formula will most likely be prescribed to complement the Acupuncture. If called for a topical ointment will also be prescribed for the itching and scaling. This will be an evolving treatment plan as you and your condition change with the treatment so it’s hard to say definitively the length but be prepared for a long course of treatment (3-6 months). 15.01.2022 How long does Acupuncture take to work? Acupuncture is not magic, it’s Medicine. Therefore it takes time. But the real answer to this question is; it depends. It depends on the person receiving the treatment. It depends on their health, their age, their health history, their diet, their lifestyle and so many other variables. ... Depending on what it is that is out of balance in your body to begin with will determine how long it will take to re- balance your internal environment. A state of disease (aside from congenital or hereditary conditions) is most often brought on by a lack of balance in your diet or lifestyle. It is the role of the Registered Acupuncturist to uncover what the true cause of the disease is and to address this in order to begin the healing process. It is not magic, it is Medicine. Any change you make in your habits will take 3 weeks to settle in and become part of your routine. There is a complex physiological change that occurs involving your endocrine system that is for another platform but like this, Acupuncture takes time. As a general rule of thumb at Ford Acupuncture, which we don’t like to use too often as we treat everyone as an individual, is to take 3 sessions within the first 7 days and to observe the changes that happen in your body. This will give us a great understanding on how your body responds to Acupuncture, as every body is different. This gives us a great place to lead from and to determine if we are on track and where we need to alter the treatments to to achieve the desired results. After the initial 3 treatments, we will discuss a further treatment plan that will usually involve around 2 treatments per week for the next 3-4 weeks depending on the condition. 05.01.2022 Psoriasis Psoriasis is a common, chronic and recurrent skin condition characterised by dry erythematous (reddening of skin due to increased blood flow in superficial capillaries due to injury, infection or inflammation), and scaling patches of various sizes. They are covered in multi layers of greyish-white, silvery or crusty plaque-like scales. Psoriasis can be excruciatingly itchy or not at all and often follows an unpredictable course of remission and exacerbations with ...unknown onset or duration. It can appear anywhere on the body but is more common on the head or hairline, behind ears, on arms and legs and in the sacral region. Psoriasis occurs equally between male and female sufferers with a median onset age of 27. In Western Medicine the cause of Psoriasis is still unknown, although is believed to be a hereditary skin condition that is set off by infections or psychogenic factors. In Traditional Chinese Medicine there are known causes, and there are around 25 different underlying imbalances in your body that can cause this condition. It would do it a disservice to go into that here but feel free to get in touch to discuss further. BUT we will cover 3 of the more common here today 1: erythema and scales appear continuously, expanding and spreading throughout the skin of the body. The lesions are flushed and swollen, the scales are easily shed when scratched and itchiness is sometimes intense! Key differential symptoms: - generalised erythematous lesions - aversion to heat (hot weather or feeling hot) - intense itching and thirst - crimson or red tongue sometimes with yellow coating 2: skin lesions are less intense than the first type, and the swelling is not as obvious. The course of disease is slow and sporadic appearance of new lesions. Lesions are usually purple red macular that are more moist and thicker covering of scales. 04.01.2022 Psoriasis Part 2 of 3: 3: the lesions are dark red and covered by a thick, hard, dark and adherent scales. Sometimes the scales look like an oyster shell. Long standing lesions May overlap leaving the skin with a map-like appearance. These larger lesions can become itchy, painful and can fissure. This can impact the function of body joints. These lesions persist for a prolonged period (10+years). Key differentiating symptoms: - Large thickened psoriatic plaques - Stubborn les...ions - Dry mouth - Constipation - Purple red tongue with thick or greasy yellow coating Now these are 3 of the more common presentations to clinic but there are many subtle variations. Prevention: - Take enough rest and don’t work too hard and avoid mental stress where possible - Try not to scratch the itch! During onset the area should be bathed in hot water or with alkali soap - Avoid eating: seafood such as shrimp, beef, lamb, spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine which are likely to intensify your psoriasis - Eat more fruit and vegetables to keep your bowels regular - Try to trace any triggering factors for reducing future occurrences Psoriasis is a chronic condition, often lasting for decades before the patient discovers Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs. As such treatment will often takes anywhere from 2-6 months or more of regular treatments and taking herbs. But given the discomfort and impact on quality of life for sufferers, this seems to be worth it in my eyes. . .
