24.01.2022 Today is International day of happiness, which recognises the importance of happiness in people's life. I hope that whatever your day was like, whatever your current situation, there was some happiness to be found https://happinessday.org/

23.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 20: Here is some food for thought. A unique study looking at the eating habits of over 7000 children across many countries have shown that eating healthy results in happier children. Although they have simplified what constitutes a healthy diet, e.g. not distinguished between good and bad fats, the overall message rings loud and clear: Feeding your kids more fruit and vegetables and less sugar is not only good for their bodies but for their mental... health as well. I read this as I have just supplied the kids with a platter of treats.... to mark that it's getting very close to Christmas :D However, it's only very small amounts, and there will be plenty of healthy foods in-between the sweet food over the next week or so. For me the important message is that it is worth it... I am constantly told that I'm way to strict food-wise by the kids... and sometimes I (almost) feel bad.... but deep down I know that I'm setting them up for life, and that matters!

23.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 14: Today I'm officially a Registered Midwife! Ten past 8 this morning came the email to say I'm officially registered with Ahpra, two minutes before I was on my way to officially graduate from Griffith University with a Barchelor of Midwifery. Ten years and two more children since I last got to wear the funny big hat

22.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 23: Are you a breastfeeding mum? Seeing relatives that you normally don't see? Did you know that the Christmas time is an especially vulnerable time for breastfeeding mums? Not only are mums often busy with preparations and socializing, so that they often end up feeding less, easily leading to engorgement, unsettled baby and decreased supply. Many also experience having their parenting questioned. Even the most innocent of comments may make a vulnerable sleep-deprived mother start doubting what she's doing. Barb has written this great etiquette for friends and family, worth a read and a share for those attending a family gathering were a breastfed baby or child will be :) https://warrnamboolbreastfeedingcentre.com.au//barbs-guide

22.01.2022 Franz Kafka, the story goes, encountered a little girl in the park where he went walking daily. She was crying. She had lost her doll and was desolate. Kafka of...fered to help her look for the doll and arranged to meet her the next day at the same spot. Unable to find the doll he composed a letter from the doll and read it to her when they met. 'Please do not mourn me, I have gone on a trip to see the world. I will write you of my adventures.' This was the beginning of many letters. When he and the little girl met he read her from these carefully composed letters the imagined adventures of the beloved doll. The little girl was comforted. When the meetings came to an end Kafka presented her with a doll. She obviously looked different from the original doll. An attached letter explained 'My travels have changed me.' Many years later, the now grown girl found a letter stuffed into an unnoticed crevice in the cherished replacement doll. In summary it said: *Every thing that you love, you will eventually lose, but in the end, love will return in a different form.'* - Kafka and the Doll, The Pervasiveness of Loss

17.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 21: Happy Summer Solstice (or winter solstice if you're in the northern hemisphere)! Although solstice most commonly falls on the 21st and are often celebrated on this day, it more commonly falls on the 22nd in Australia. This year it occurs around 2 am on the 22nd. The summer solstice occurs when the Sun's track across the Australian sky reaches its highest point. It is the day that has the most daylight hours of any in the year, however, it does not feature neither the earliest sunrise of latest sunset.

16.01.2022 Although this information is about babies in NICU or special care, the information is still very relevant to breastmilk in general.

16.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 24: And with that the countdown is done. At my place the turkey roll is in the oven, the Christmas music is blaring and so is the air con... However you choose to celebrate, I wish you and your loved ones a safe and enjoyable time together. It has been a pleasure to interact with many of you over the last few weeks. I'll take a couple of days off, play many board games and eat way too much food, and I'll be back on the other side :) xxx

16.01.2022 Magnesium is essential for so many functions in our body. the need is especially high during pregnancy. A great way to add it to your daily routine is via what's usually referred to as MagWater. It is both easy and very cheap to make.

15.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 19: On this day in 1843, Charles Dickens first published the very popular book 'A Christmas Carol'. I can't think of any other book that has as many film adaptations as this one, from Disney's, to Looney tunes, to Barbie, to 'Beavis and Butt-head'... there is not end to the list. I quite liked the Muppet's version myself. Do you have a favorite? Charles Dickens himself said about this story:... 'I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.' See more

13.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 17: Third Sunday in advent, and the third candle is lit for JOY. I vividly remember standing in kitchen slaving over the pans at Christmas, think it was while my youngest was a 18 months... bigger kids where arguing, toddler demanding something from the other room, very loudly, my stress level was off the scale and it suddenly appeared to me that this sucks! All the normal demands of being a mum with all those extra demands I'd put on myself becau...se it was THE day, made for one unhappy me, and there was definitely no joy. I had to give myself a stern talking to, because I was the one putting all those stresses on myself. Since then i have made it a priority to find the joy and be very picky on what I spend my time and energy on... don't aim for perfect, aim for joy, which really equated to quality time, laughs and just being together, whether the treats on the table is home baked or shop-bought is less important. On that note, I came by this great poem by Amanda from @mothersmilkandmentalhealth Hang the lights, set up the tree, Sit the kids on Santa's knee. Buy the socks, and trains, and bears. Curse when wrapping paper tears! Make a list, check it twice. Don’t forget to pick up ice. Go to shops, buy ALL the food, And plastic crap to set the mood. Crackers full of lousy jokes And toys on which the kids can choke. One must simply not forget The matching plates and serviettes. Everything you need is there Including your own deep despair. For even though there’s piles of stuff You fear that you are not enough. You look around at all the mess. What do you want for Christmas? Less. Less to do. Less to make. Less to buy. Less to bake. Why do we do this? Why on Earth? When stuff is not what proves our worth! I asked my son what he likes best? When Mummy sits and has a rest. He really couldn’t give a fuck About orange-glazed slow-roasted duck. In fact he would be just as pleased With orange juice and toast with cheese. All the rest is just for show. So please, my dear, breathe deep, and slow. Remember if the day gets rough, You always were, and are, enough. Christ was born without a set Of matching plates and serviettes. - Amanda Donnet

12.01.2022 I wrote this as an assignment for a midwifery class last year. It was supposed to be an artistic expression of the woman's experience of her birth, that I had a...ttended the week before as a brand new baby midwife student. I'm finding it comes into my head often these days as I get the privilege to spend more time in that magical space with birthing people. I figured a few of you might like to hear it *****EDIT********* I was so not expecting this many people to see and love my little song! I have received a ton of messages asking to be able to download the song and have the lyrics. Given that I am STILL a very busy midwifery student, I don't have much time or financial resources to be able to produce an amazing quality song to be downloaded, but I quickly recorded a version for folks wanting to add it to playlists and whatnot, which is available on Bandcamp. http://oliviatupper.bandcamp.com/track/she-roars Thank you again for all the love and support, I am overwhelmed at the amount of loving messages I am receiving. My heart is so full and I am amazed at the size and strength of the birth worker community that exists on here! Love to you all!

12.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 22: I'm all set and with days to spare I must admit that I'm usually wrapping presents until the very last minute, so this is pretty good going, thought I'd better follow my own advice and make sure that the actual days in question are quite relaxed. Have a lovely weekend

08.01.2022 Imagine all the things we're still to learn from this amazing superfood

07.01.2022 Christmas countdown December 18: Today I'd like to share i video I only came across today. I've been sleeping 'grounded/earthed for a few years now, read ta lot about it, looked up papers etc., but this video sums up a lot of what it might take hours to read up on, so well worth to have a look. 06.01.2022 Only trust information from reputable sources, such as the WHO.

03.01.2022 I wish you all a happy new year, and a continued lovely summer. I will still be seeing lactation clients this year, but as I'm also starting a new job mid-January times will be limited, especially in January-February while finding me feet :)
