21.01.2022 As we slip slop slap now the warmer months are here, you may be forgiven for thinking that the layers of hair, fur or feathers on your family pet are protection enough from the damaging rays of the sun. But skin tumours are not unique to humans; animals can get skin cancer too. If your pet enjoys basking in the sun, there are some simple ways to get sun smart with your pet. Make sure your pet always has shelter and shade, particularly during the day, and avoid taking them outdoors in the heat. Cats and dogs with short or no hair, light-coloured coats or skin, or sparse tummy fur are most at risk, so a pet friendly sunscreen can be applied, just like you would to yourself, for optimal protection. #pet #cat #doglover #catlover #petlover #veterinary #veterinarian #sydneyvet #petsinthesun #slipslopslap

20.01.2022 Love or hate the look, Movember is a very worthy fundraising event on the human calendar, but did you know that testicular tumours are one of the most common tumours in older intact male dogs? Fortunately, because of the high rate of de-sexing, the overall incidence in dogs is not very high. Nevertheless, it looks like there are some kindred spirits in the animal world that still want to lend their support to Movember! 13.01.2022 Most people are unaware that as well as the traditional red poppy worn to mark the Armistice Day of 11 November 1918, that there is also the purple poppy, remembering animals that died during conflict. Today we also remember and commemorate all the animal deeds and sacrifices in war. #lestweforget

13.01.2022 Top Dog Breeds #3: With a lustrous golden coat, and as their name suggests, originally bread to retrieve shot birds, the Golden Retriever breed originates from the UK in the early 1900’s. Well renowned for their obedience, eagerness to please and even temper, they make popular service dogs for the blind and disabled. A high pain tolerance makes them ideal as search and rescue dogs, but this trait also means they can be more likely to endure injuries that need veterinary care... with minimal fuss. Great with children, they are excellent family pets, although lack guard instincts so are more likely to shower an intruder with love than veracious barking. Despite not being prone to barking, an Aussie Golden Retriever is the current world record holder for the loudest bark at 113 dB! A large, active cross breed who loves to ‘work’, the Golden Retriever is very adaptable. So long as there is daily exercise, preferably a good game of ‘fetch’’ or a swim, these dogs can be just as happy living in an apartment as on a large rural property. Regular check-ups, a healthy diet and daily exercise should see a healthy lifespan of 10 13 years easily achieved. Golden Retrievers are an impressive and versatile breed and are very deserving of their top 3 position. #dogs #doglovers #goldenretriever #dogbreeds #bestdogbreeds #pets #petowners #dogowners

07.01.2022 Top Australian Cat Breed #2: If you find yourself working from home for the unforeseeable future, this could be the cat for you! The Australian Mist, known formerly as the Spotted Mist is a breed of cat developed right here in Australia. Derived from Burmese, Abyssinian, and the Domestic short hair, it is a delightfully loving, confident, and resilient breed. This mixed ancestry has resulted in a moderate sized, shorthaired breed, with a coat that could be one of a number o...f colours. A truly companionable pet, they are tolerant of handling, disinclined to scratch, bright but relaxed. They crawl into the nearest lap regardless of invitation, and their curious 'people focused' nature makes them an excellent indoor friend and affectionate companion. A gorgeous breed with a caring temperament. Generally a low maintenance and healthy breed, they can be prone to gingivitis, it is therefore important to maintain their dental hygiene. This can include a good quality dry food or dental diet, dental chews or even brushing their teeth if they will let you! The Australian Mist typically weighs between 4 and 7 kg, and with regular health checks, will enjoy a lifespan of usually 12 to 15 years. #australianmist #topcatbreed #cats #kittens #vet #petlovers #catlovers #sydneyvet

05.01.2022 Never work with children or animals they said! Naturally, our animal loving team at Vetmed didn’t heed this warning, and thankfully, neither did many TV producers! 03.01.2022 Vetmed’s open hours for Friday 11th December will be a little shorter due to our staff Christmas party. Should you require emergency assistance, when calling our phone number we have an easy phone menu which will direct your call to SASH Emergency Hospital.

03.01.2022 Was the Easter Bunny very generous this Easter? If your curious 4 legged family member has found their way into your post Easter stash of chocolate, you need to be aware that chocolate is actually harmful to dogs. It contains the substances theobromine and caffeine. Darker chocolate has higher levels of these substances, and is especially dangerous, but even white chocolate can still be toxic. The amount of chocolate consumed and the size of your dog both contribute to the degree of severity if harm that may occur - but should be treated as an emergency regardless. Contact Vetmed if you're unsure, or if infact your dog has consumed chocolate.

03.01.2022 Top Australian Dog Breed #2: First recorded in Australia in 1929, the Labrador Retriever is good tempered, energetic, adaptable, and devoted companion. Often termed ‘gundogs’, their versatility has made them suitable for work as guide/ assistance dogs for those with vision loss or other disabilities, in customs and the armed forces. Not to mention they also make an excellent family pet. The Labrador is one of the most recognisable dogs, and their short weather resistant coat... comes in three colours, black, yellow (ranging from light cream to red fox) or chocolate. A few good brushings a week should keep it looking its best, more often during moulting season. Known for the waggiest tails in the world, they are extremely loyal, patient, friendly, and will bond with children and other accommodating family pets. Their large stature and bark will appear to ward off strangers, but they will welcome them with love and enthusiasm. They have a strong zest for life and exercise, so regular walks of at least 30 minutes with some time off leash is ideal. To fuel this boundless energy, these dogs have a big appetite, and their diet needs to be regulated to ensure they do not put on weight. Labradors are large, robust dogs, that stand about 57-62 cm tall at the shoulders, with an average lifespan of approximately 1216 years. Like many dog breeds they should get lots of exercise and regular vet check-ups to keep them happy and healthy. At #2, they an are indeed one of Australia's most favourite! #topdopbreed #labrador #gundogbreed #labradorretriever #vetsydney
