11.01.2022 Quick Question: Do you know how old your power boards, double adapters and extension leads are? And are they safe to use? ANSWER: Besides looking for physical damage, Look at the "Pins" (the bits that plug into the wall or into a "socket". IF they are all "bare" ie just metal, then they are likely to be 15 years old- or older. The reason? Since 2005, it has been law that all plugs sold AND USED in Australia have "insulation" on the active and neutral pins. This means ...the top two pins (as you look at the wall socket) should be sheathed in some form of plastic for approximately half their length. If they arent, they are a) illegal to sell or use, and b) very old in electrical terms. Whilst the "illegality" issue may be more applicable to commercial premises, the age thing is more common and more dangerous for the home situation. Electrical appliances age a bit like "pet years" In this day and age, electrical appliances are "old" by the time they are 10...and, like your dog or cat, virtually ancient if they have lasted 15 or 20 years. SO.... IF your plugs dont have insulation (also knows as sheathing) on their pins.... its probably time for a new "appliance"- especially powerboards, double adapters or extension leads See more

07.01.2022 'tis the (Silly) Season... Well, Christmas is upon us, and so are many strings of Christmas lights. Gorgeous Waterfall effects, Stars, multi coloured strings, icicles and more. They generally have ONE thing in common. Many of the new Chistmas lights are sold as "weather proof" and it takes some careful reading of thr fine print to determine that part of the description ONLY relates to the "light" part - ie the globe bits- although most are LED which isnt really a globe. As... a rule, from my experience, it rarely relates to the plug-in bit, or more importantly that little black control box thingy that makes the lights flash, change colours or chase each other. So, when installing your new "outside lights" make sure the powerpoint/lead connection is suitable (and waterproof) BUT also make sure the "magic box" is either weather proof OR, preferably, under suitable cover or inside ur house. MOST "string lights" have a good bit of lead from the control box to the first light- take advantage of this!! OH, and remember to watch where you MOW (or whippersnapper) if you have lights crossing over your lawn!! Trying to repair a mangled set of mown lights ia not easy. Happy Holidays See more

06.01.2022 There is an old saying that runs along the lines of "Cheap is seldom good and good is seldom cheap" or to put it another way "You get what you pay for". Meaning there are very few bargains in this world. We all love a bargain, but we should all be very careful when it comes to electricity and the things that run on electricity. Cheap electrical appliances will, as a general rule, not last as long as better quality items. While we dont need to buy the most expensive brand..., we should be very careful about choosing the cheapest option. When it comes to heating appliances- a melted heater is obviously not ideal... and "faulty heaters" are one of the common causes of house fires. Extension leads or powerboards can also melt if the cable size is smaller than it should be, they can also have "loose sockets" which leads to arcing between pin and socket- which may "blow up" your expensive TV or computer or anything else that may be plugged into it. Dont risk it... buy a brandname, not a "no-name" See more
