24.01.2022 Fire Bucket or Pits Tips Can I have a fire bucket or pit in the backyard? With the cooler weather here and social restrictions in force, seems like everyone is enjoying sitting around a fire bucket and relaxing in this crazy times. Us too! ... Under council regulations you are permitted to have a small fire for recreational and / or cooking purposes. Here’s a few simple tips to ensure we don’t gate crash your next fire bucket session 1. Position your bucket or pit away from flammable materials, especially structures 2. Make sure you have an adequate water supply and responsible adult nearby 3. Only burn clean, dry timber such as firewood. Pallets are generally treated and the chemicals used aren’t nice to anyone’s health. Cancer sucks! 4. Minimise smoke production and check that any smoke isn’t going drift across the neighbours washing and give them a friendly heads up so they don’t mistake you fire for an unwanted one. 5. Burning rubbish, building materials such as painted timber and green waste is NOT permitted and fines can apply if reported to Triple 0. #fhrfb #winteriscoming #firebucket #firepit #nswrfs #forourcommunity

17.01.2022 AGRICULTURAL BURN The observant members of our community may have noticed the large column of smoke coming from Tahara Park behind the school. 17.01.2022 Last Tuesday #fhrfb took our #pumper to #LakeAlbert to conduct some training and give the pump a shakedown after some maintenance. We exercised the crew in their ability to draught water from the lake and move as much water as they could, as quick as they could. The results seen our pump working to its limits and moving ~2400lpm at ~900kPa (calculated on indicated flow rates at the branch and monitor in use). Given its primarily urban role, drawing water from a static supp...ly like this is not something it will do often. So it is important that we take these opportunities and put us and the truck through its paces, to ensure everything works at its peak. #nswrfs #pumping #training #forourcommunity

12.01.2022 Fires which start during harvesting operations can destroy homes, crops and livelihoods. However many are preventable. It is your responsibility to limit the ignition and prevent the spread of fires from your property. This voluntary guide applies to all grain harvesting operations that occur in the paddock including the operation of grain harvesters, vehicles involved in the transporting of grain, grain dryers and grain augers. Your responsibilities:... Under the Rural Fires Act 1997, any public authorities and owners and occupiers of land have a duty to prevent fires starting or spreading from a property. Land owners and occupiers must not use any machinery where heated parts of the machine comes into contact with combustible material. If you are using machinery, or you are welding, using explosives or an angle grinder, you should always carry fire safety equipment such as: A knapsack spray pump with at least 16 litres of water ; or A fire extinguisher (liquid type) of at least nine litres capacity ; or A dry powder extinguisher of at least 0.9kg capacity. When to cease harvesting It is recommended that you cease harvesting operations when the Grass Fire Danger Index (GFDI) is 35 or more. To make it easier, we’ve attached the grain harvesting guide below. #fhrfb #nswrfs #harvest #cropfire #forourcommunity #HarvestSafety

11.01.2022 That's a wrap. Santa has boarded his sleigh and is well on his way back to the North Pole to load up for tonight. We thank everyone who came out to see us as we went around. After such an ordinary year, it was great to see so many people, young and old, out celebrating the season and getting a lolly pop from Santa. If we missed anyone, please accept our sincerest apologies, we did our best to ensure we hit each and every street around the area. We also sincerely appreciate th...e many generous donations that we received. Thank you. Another shout out and massive thanks goes also to Lake Albert RFB and #EunonyRFB for loaning us their tankers so we could complete this years run. The Forest Hill tanker is currently undergoing a mid life refurbishment, and without these two neighbouring brigades, we would have been struggling to complete this years Santa Run. We have the Lake Albert truck at our station until ours is back on deck. Thanks guys! From all of us here at #fhrfb we wish you all a safe and merry Christmas. We hope Santa is good to you all!

10.01.2022 Good morning Forest Hill. We have woken this morning to find this used microwave at our door step. Perhaps someone with the best of intentions thought that we could use it? If so, we certainly appreciate the thoughts but we don’t have any need for it, and it could be gifted to a worthy charity supporting those less fortunate. If you have goods that you believe that we could make use of, and wish to donate, please feel free to contact us in the first instance to discuss. If... it’s not a case of someone with good intentions, well we aren’t a waste disposal facility. Kindly please come and collect your waste and dispose of it accordingly. 08.01.2022 : Wagga Wagga Botanical Gardens & Zoo : Macleay St / Lord Baden Powell Dr : Sunday 3 May (or Sunday 17 May)... The objective of this low intensity bush fire hazard reduction burn is to reduce the fuel load (vegetation) and therefore minimise the potential impacts of a bush fire on life, property and the environment. The characteristics of a low intensity burn include: Flame heights will average less than 1 metre, but may be higher in patches of heavy or elevated fuels. Scorch height which is the height to which tree leaves are killed from the heat of the fire should be less than 3 metres. The fire should spread only at a slow walking pace. This burn will also double as an ecological burn that will help towards regenerating remnant plant communities in the burn area and will assist with maintaining ecosystem diversity and health. This burn is being undertaken in addition to the previous HR notification released 20 April. Whilst the Willans Hill Reserve will remain open, persons accessing the Reserve for exercise are strongly encouraged to avoid the area Firefighters from both Fire + Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service will be in attendance City of Wagga Wagga NSW RFS - Forest Hill Brigade Lake Albert RFB Yarragundry RFB Fire and Rescue NSW Station 472 Turvey Park Fire and Rescue NSW Station 480 Wagga Wagga credit The Daily Advertiser

08.01.2022 A total fire ban means no fires out in the open. A total fire ban helps limit the potential of fires developing. During a Total Fire Ban you cannot light, maint...ain or use a fire in the open, or to carry out any activity in the open that causes, or is likely to cause, a fire. General purpose hot works (such as welding, grinding or gas cutting or any activity that produces a spark or flame) are not to be done in the open. The NSW RFS strongly recommends you reconsider activities such as such using a tractor or slashing, to help reduce the chance of a fire starting on your property. Under certain conditions, the NSW RFS may issue a Harvest Safety Alert.

02.01.2022 Tuesday 4 May 2021 is St Florian's Day, a very special day for those in the firefighting family. St Florian’s Day is named after the Patron Saint of firefighter...s and is traditionally the day where we come together to recognise our volunteers and staff who have gone above and beyond showing incredible acts of bravery in protecting the community or delivering the highest level of commitment to the Service that is worthy of special recognition. In all cases, the recipients are nominated by their peers, which makes receiving an award on St Florian’s Day even more significant and special. This year’s recipients demonstrated extreme acts of bravery in the face of horrific conditions experienced during the 2019/2020 Black Summer bush fires. Given the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to mark this St Florian’s Day with one event to present all recipients with their awards. This year, on 4 May 2021 those receiving among highest of honours will be presented their awards, followed by a number of regional events in the coming weeks for those receiving other commendations. Please join us to recognise the recipients of awards and thank them for their ongoing commitment to the Service and the community.
