25.01.2022 Hard at work painting the ends of the personalised kids veggie bed you'll be able to see at the Warragul Farmers Market next Saturday 16 Nov.

25.01.2022 Just a quick note to let you all know that my family and I have moved to Castlemaine. I would like to say a huge thank you to all those people who have supported us setting up our business in Warragul. We were inspired by conversations that we had with people at the Warragul Farmers Market and excited that many people in the community are interested in growing more of their own food. If anyone knows people in the Castlemaine area be sure to let them know that we are now in town!

23.01.2022 Here is another recently completed project where we have included some wire racks on the end of the beds, for climbing plants or for hanging pots etc off. This is an excellent way to maximise your growing space if you are short of room.

22.01.2022 I've had a busy morning planting +100 veggie seedlings for a client - spring onions, tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, cantaloupe, basil, rocket and a whole lot more. The first pic is bags of leaf mould which I prepared the bed with. The hoops are for netting to keep off pesky possums. A reminder to any Castlemaine locals that I'm available to look after your veggie patch over the holiday period if you're going away.

22.01.2022 Look what we picked today! We've had a great crop of strawberries this year and they're super sweet. You can't beat home grown fruit.

21.01.2022 Congratulations to Colleen Oakley Browne who won a personalised kids veggie bed package from us at Warragul Farmers Market yesterday. If you're interested to learn more about how Fork and Spade Edible Gardens can help you grow your own food, send us a message or give Brett a call on 0435 019 088.

21.01.2022 We'll be at Warragul Farmers Market again this Saturday 21 Dec. Come and say hi and this month we'll be displaying our full sized veggie bed to get you inspired to grow your own!

19.01.2022 Check out the new veggie bed we installed yesterday ready for planting. A customer at the Warragul Farmers Market on Saturday ordered this for a Christmas present. Happy planting and Merry Christmas!

17.01.2022 Moving regions has reminded me how important it is to understand the local conditions for veggie growing - water availability, soil quality, climate etc. We have had lots of frosts the past couple of months which will impact early Spring plantings. It is also much drier here so we'll be using drip irrigation, thick mulch and experimenting with wicking beds. Happy to respond to any questions you may have about your own edible garden!

16.01.2022 Warragul Farmers Market was our first official event yesterday and what a fabulous day it was. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and showed such interest in our business. A special thanks to Sean, Fides, Melissa, Michelle and Megan who helped us to make it happen.

16.01.2022 Happy New Year everyone. After a late start to the growing season we're now harvesting a good range of veg from our patch. Today we picked beans, potatoes, broccoli, beetroot and lettuce. Freshly dug new potatoes are so good, especially when they're boiled with some fresh mint. Don't forget Brett can visit your home and give you a free quote if you'd like to get your fruit and veg garden happening in 2014!

15.01.2022 Fancy winning a kids veggie bed worth $300? We'll be at the Warragul Farmers Market this Saturday 16 Nov with one just like this to be won! All you have to do is leave your details with us on the stand and we'll draw the winner at 1pm. ... Come and chat to Brett about how he can help you to grow your own food.

14.01.2022 We have had quite a bit going on and it's been a while since we've added a post, so I thought I should give a bit of an update on some projects that we have been working on lately. Here is a photo of some of the beds that we made for the Warragul Community Garden at Eastern Park. If you haven't already you should get down there and check out the amazing work that the GTBB team have done so far, its looking absolutely fantastic.

12.01.2022 Another great day at the Warragul Farmers Market, lots of interest. I still have this display bed left, price negotiable if you take it this weekend.

12.01.2022 Let's talk composts. I believe every garden should have one - perfect way to recycle organic waste, brilliant for veggie growing and easy to do. If your compost is too acidic you'll probably have lots of tiny flies in it. To fix this I'd reduce the amount of acidic waste, e.g. citrus, and add some lime to sweeten the mix. Adding some more dry materials such as straw or newspaper can also help by increasing the level of carbon.

08.01.2022 Thank you to Sallie, Erika and Kelly for the opportunity to showcase one of my veggie beds at the Waterford Rise Warragul Block Party last weekend. This bed is an example of a no dig garden designed for a small space. Come and see us at the Warragul Farmers Market tomorrow for more ideas about growing food in small spaces.

08.01.2022 So we've moved to Castlemaine and finally settled in and then I realised it's October already and I haven't got my own veggie garden started. I can't possibly go a whole season without any food to pull from the garden. So with no time to prepare the existing soil, I decided to go with an instant no dig garden. I'm lucky to have a decent size block so there are plenty of grass clippings and soft tree prunings to use. I also bought some local pea straw and 1/2 a trailer load of... good quality compost to mix with my own. After mowing the grass as close as possible, I put down a thick layer of wet newspaper to stop the grass, then followed with a thick layer of pea straw laced with a sprinkle of organic fertiliser. On top of this I added layers of organic materials, i.e. grass clippings, compost, soft prunings, leaves etc. I topped it with another layer of straw and let it settle for a day or two. When I was ready to plant I just pulled aside a pocket of straw for each seedling, filled this with compost and then popped in the seedling. The straw will break down over the season and provide a quality compost for the plants to grow in. See more

07.01.2022 There's only a few green stems left on our garlic, it's nearly ready to harvest!

07.01.2022 As per tradition we planted our tomatoes on Melbourne Cup Day yesterday and what a perfect planting day it was. We especially like Tigerellas. What's your favourite variety?

03.01.2022 We've been a little quiet of late as its been VERY hot and dry and the garden hasn't been at its best. But look what we picked today! Mmm what to have for dinner tonight. If you've got any questions about your veggie patch send me a post.

01.01.2022 Hello Growing Together Members, As you may well be aware the 'Big Working Bee' to build and fill the garden beds is fast upon us. This Friday the 4th and Saturd...ay the 5th starting at 10am at the new garden site, Eastern Park (behind the community house). Many of you have responded to our call for 'gloved hands' to help in any capacity on the day(s), and we thanks you all. To be able to get the building done there are a number of tools that we desperately need that would help the day run smoothly. For Fridays and Saturdays working bee we need the following tools: 1 x petrol post hole digger 1 x bobcat/dingo if at all possible for loading soil etc (I big ask but maybe someone has one available???? wheelbarrows shovels (or more) metal rakes 4 x drills with hex head drill bits for screwing in bolts 2 x circular saws and saw horses 4 x 1m long spirit levels to level off beds as they are being constructed If you can provide any of these or know of someone who can, please contact me. Here is a list of some of the bigger jobs for the Friday, with the remainder falling over on the Saturday: Installing irrigation including fitting off taps and plumbing concrete pond/trough Digging holes for posts Installing posts for garden beds Setting out sleepers for garden beds Cutting of some sleepers with circular saw Screwing sleepers to posts with drills Installing corrugated iron, screwing to posts Filling and racking garden beds Installing edging to low garden beds And lots of smaller jobs in and around these. Don't forget that lunch will be provided, with BBQ, salads and snacks. With many gloved hands to help we can get the garden beds ready for a fruitful Autumn planting, its a very exciting time. Come on down and have a look, we would love to see our wonderful supporters there; to lend a hand, some enthusiasm or to lend your encouragement. It looks to be a very productive, busy and fun filled couple of days. I hope to see you there regards Donna Hallam and the Growing Together Steering Committee
