25.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 5 Interesting Happenings at the Fork and Spade... Bee houses are back!! Bees are essential in our lives. Did you know that one in every three bites of food that we eat is derived from plants pollinated by bees. The bee houses also attract beneficial insects which are crucial to keep our gardens strong and happy. Also check out our packets of beneficial insect seed mix. This mixture of flowers and herbs promotes natural diversity by reducing pests. The veggie and flower seed stand has been totally refreshed. Plant now for early spring results. But be quick as so many of you always seem to miss out. Our last delivery of seed potatoes for the season has just arrived. Seed potatoes are certified for a good headed crop. Plant now for summer potatoes. Imagine impressing your friends at seasonal bbqs with a potato salad grown from your own garden. Remember all fresh herbs and veggies come in late Tuesday night and are on the stands at doors open Wednesday morning. Time to start planning, by seed or seedling, your Summer veggie crop. Sow directly or into small pots to replant in weeks to come. Come and speak to us about how to get the best results from your Summer veggie plantings. The deciduous trees are looking great. Many varieties are at bud swell or are bursting into flower or leaf. A lovely time to select and plant out. They will have their roots out and settled before summer arrives. Springtime is just around the corner. Every local gardener dream time in our district. God bless. Carolyn

24.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 3 6 Autumn Gardening.... Autumn is a big month for all gardeners. By far the best time for gardening in our district. The soil is still warm from summer and the upside of recent flooding, wonderfully moist. The nursery is fully stocked for your Autumn plantings with a huge new delivery that arrived today. In this drop a huge selection of your favourite climbers. So good to have the wysterias back. Blue, pink and white, lovely specimens. Another favourite, is an Australian native climber, the hardenbergia. The extremely fragrant sandback jasmine and who can go past the yellow and white banksia roses. French lavender is in plentiful supply. Definitely the best lavender for growing in our district. An excellent selection of grasses. The green pennisentum, is such a strong growing clumping grass and two different miscanthums. Both of these grasses have lovely generous plumes. Many of you will be familiar with their very successful plantings at our Anzac Park near the train station. Still a couple of weeks out, however to ensure abundant stock for all your special mums, Mother's Day stock has started arriving. More on this in next week's newsletter, but be sure to check out beautiful stock when visiting the nursery this weekend. My favourite time of year. Cool nights and sparkling days. Be sure to get outside and enjoy this beautiful weather in your garden. God bless. Carolyn

22.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 6 Fertilise, fertilise, fertilise!... If you do not fertilise at any other time of the year, you must do so now. Early Spring fertilising will awaken the roots and you'll be awarded by the thick flush of growth that comes in the warmer months. Fertilising can be broken into two groups, organic and non organic. This week we will discuss the non organic, man made, complete fertiliser. Fruit and citrus fertiliser contains all the essential nutrients, plus trace elements, which combine to give strong, healthy root, leaf and fruit formation. Nothing is more giving than citrus trees, so keep them well fed. Garden and vegetable plant food is suitable for a wide range of veggies, shrubs and seedlings. It can be added into the growing media, prior to planting. Or scattered on the surface of trees and shrubs. Hibiscus and bougainvillea plant food is extremely important. No plant responds more to fertilsing than these two. Many people like to scatter camellia and gardenia fertiliser around their roots, which is quick and easy. But undoubtedly the best method is the liquid 'blue box'. More rain coming this week provides a golden opportunity for optimal results for your fertilising programme. Do the work now and you will be rewarded. God bless. Carolyn

21.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 3 0 Summer Watering... Watering is so important at this time of year. Normally best to water early in the morning, however some gardens find it more suitable to water early in the evening. Avoid watering disease prone plants such as roses or lawn in the evening, because they need the sunshine to dry out. Water deeply but less frequently to encourage roots to grow down. Sometimes an application of a soil water can encourage water to seep into the soil. Pots require a daily moisture checking. They dry out much quicker than a garden bed. Position your thirstiest pot plants closest to the tap. Your pots would now appreciate a liquid fertilise to help them cope with the heat. Keep light applications of fertiliser up to your lawn. Remember lawn grubs love the summer months, so keep the lawn strong and healthy to beat the blasted grubs. A small amount of pruning can be done now, such as removing the spent blooms from bottle brush or oleander. Remember to mulch well. Most gardeners use sugar cane but please give th Who Flung Dung a try. It is a little more expensive but well worth it. We have excellent examples of ficus hillii currently in stock. They will not last long, so do think about grabbing one now. People are starting to think about the gift giving season. A thousand and one gift ideas available for the gardener at the nursery. Remember gift vouchers always a wonderful idea too. God bless. Carolyn

20.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 7 Organic Fertilising... Continuing on our fertilising chat, this week we will discuss organic fertilising. Starting with my beloved Seamungus. This incredible health tonic for plants is a blend of fish, seaweed and humic acid. Ideal for use year round in the garden. This wonder fertiliser can be used on pretty much anything in your garden. I can not recommend this product enough. Also produced by the mighty Neutrog is Sudden Impact for Roses and Lawns. These fertilisers are organic based and chemically boosted, which will help new growth and root development. One of the economical ways of fertilising the whole garden is to use a whole bag of Five In One, which contains sheep, horse, cow manure and mushroom compost. Another great cost effective alternative is a large bag of Organic Booster. For your lawns tip a large bag of Turf Master into the wheel barrow this weekend and throw it all over the lawn. Job done! Do the work now and sit back and reap the benefits come the warmer months and growing season. God bless. Carolyn.

20.01.2022 A wonderful positive that has come from this challenging year is that so many of you have embraced the joy and rewards of growing your own veggies. Really looking forward to stocking the new Vegebags. By the same people who brought us the Vegepod, this innovative new product is sure to be popular. The bags are a good deal smaller, just as effective and in everybody’s price range. For those interested, I do need to order by the end of this week to ensure a pre Christmas delivery. The perfect gift for all growing enthusiasts.

18.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S P A R T 8 Vegetable Growers... Every garden can be productive by providing the family with appertizing and health giving vegies when taken straight from your own garden. The vegie punnets come in fresh every Wednesday and there is now a good supply of seeds. Rotation of crops is most important. Meaning you would never plant cauliflower where you have just picked cabbage, nor would you plant carrots where you have just harvested parsnips. The aim is to follow a root crop with a leafy green crop. We are often asked about growing potatoes. First they should be grown from reliable seed potatoes. The idea of any potato in the cupboard that has an eye will grow, is wrong. It may grow but you will not pick a good crop. For best results deeply dig soil and apply a large quantity of animal manure and compost. Addressing your super and pot ash also helps. Dig trenches about 30cm deep and about 50cm apart. When first shoots appear hill up or gently drop leaf litter over fresh shoots. Plenty of seed potatoes available. The other planting being strawberries. Great for deserts or jam making and children love picking from the strawberry patch. When space is limited plants make a pretty edible edging to the flower garden. Rich well drained soil suits them best. They require adequate moisture and love to mulched. Plants will give a good crop for 3 to 5 years. Raise garden beds help for successful vegie growing. We can supply vegie pods and the raised colorbond garden beds are all in stock. Thank you to local vegie growing enthusiasts Willa and Elke Goodhew (pictured) for showing us their bountiful crop. Happy growing. God bless. Carolyn

17.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 9 Potting mixes are a big part of a gardeners life!... There are so many specialty mixes available. Native potting pot mix with low phosphorus is ideal for garden or pots. Rose and cirrus has extra pot ash for larger fruit and blooms. Seed and cutting mix will ensure good and even germination. Azalea mix is ideal for all acid loving including gardeias and camellias. Cactus and succulent mix is a necessity for these dry climate favourites. I should add, a huge delivery of succulents and cacti this week. For your indoor babies we strongly suggest you get on board with Peat 80. The week to add to your indoor collection with a massive delivery of indoors arriving this week. On a side note. Can you believe it is bougainvillea (pictured) time already. Where has the year gone. Huge delivery of bambinos this week. Now is the time to be in your garden. We are available everyday to help you build the garden of your dreams. Happy planting. God bless. Carolyn

17.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 2 1 Springtime... At this magic time of year gardens in our district are awash with colour, as is the Fork and Spade. We have several big truck deliveries every week during the spring time planting season. Many different salvias (pictured) are now in stock. Pinks, blues, white and red....all your favourites ready for planting. African daises are hard to beat. Ever so hardy and we have some great new colours in stock for the season. Gaura, otherwise known as blushing butterflies are magnificent with their dark coloured foliage and dancing small white flowers. Plenty of new colours with dianthus. Sugar plums and memories are so, so fragrant. At last a good supply of geraniums. They are small but a huge range including ivy, fancy leaf and zonals. Alstroenerias in many colours have just arrived. Not in flower yet but perfect time for planting to enjoy a summer bloom. Hydrangeas, also not in flower yet, but plant this classic in a featured spot in your garden now to enjoy their glory in the warmer months. All colours in crepe myrtles, plenty of teucriuns including silver box and a new selection of succulents that I know many of you have been waiting for. A heavenly selection of so many of your favorite flowering perennials and shrubs in this weeks list. We look forward to seeing you. Happy planting. God bless. Carolyn

17.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 2 8 Plenty of Plants... Big delivery week. A good selection of interesting plants arrived today. Just to start you thinking about Christmas ideas, what ten year old boy would not love a venus fly trap? They only come around this time of year, especially for Chrstmas. Another interesting arrival and necessary for some gardens are water plants. It's a very exciting collection, well suited for larger aquariums, pretty ponds or lakes. A few different oleanders. Not large numbers, but it is a start. Baby bay tree has proved to be most successful, will live happily continually in a container. The teucrium silver and n'sapphires have also been difficult to find. Very nice specimens have arrived this week. I guess the pick of the bunch has to be the new delivery of hydrangeas (pictured). A real summer delight. We can grow them in our district now, as they are growing them tougher! The red and white petunias are extremely good this year. Plant into any spare pot you have now and they will be looking particularly festive come Christmas time. The pot of colour table is looking extremely bright and cheery this week. I find at this time of the year many families like to add that touch of colour. Do the work now and enjoy a festive season of joyous colour with your loved ones. God bless. Carolyn

16.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 3 1 Interesting New Arrivals... Interesting culinary plants have just arrived. The cooking curry bush is now with us. The leaves are very popular in authentic curry dishes. The Burdekin Plum is one of my favourites, great for the edible fruit it produces, but better still is the medium sized shade tree. Blueberries are selling very well indeed. Pop one in a pot, a wonderful gift idea. We have a quantity of very nice rose bushes available.Smaller than our autumn/winter selection but a lot of beauties on offer. All now in flower. Great selection of indoor plants. Large and small Ficus Lyrata (pictured) in nice advanced sizes available. When inspecting the big new range of indoors, enquire about a very interesting, large growing ficus now in stock, that we haven't carried before. Would look amazing in a big pot. This is our last indoor delivery before Christmas. The Aloha Mandevilla's are so colourful and pretty. Red, pink and white. Great as a low growing informal creeper. In the shed we have a thousand and one fun and inexpensive gift ideas ready to go under your Christmas tree. The orange koi fish ornaments are back. We had them some time ago and they sold out very quickly. They make a little pond look ever so pretty. The fairy house is overflowing with wonderful stocking fillers for the kids. Heading into the Christmas season, after a very trying year for many. Let's all look out for each other and be grateful for our family, friends and community. God bless. Carolyn.

12.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 2 Unusual Trees... We all love the Pears, Prunus and Plane Trees but why not consider one of the following unusual deciduous trees to create an interesting focal point for your garden. The Ribinia Mop Top is available this year in three sizes. Extra large, large and small. The limey green fluorescent foliage creates a spectacular, shimmering but visually cooling display from Springtime. Looks fantastic as a small statement tree, at an entrance, or lining a driveway. Grows well in any soil in our district. Will not frost. Smaller specimens will grow quite happily in a pot. The grafted Weeping Mulberry is indeed a special tree. There is something magical about the long billowing branches creating a cubby structure that all children find enchanting. But have no doubt, this is a tough tree that thrives in our climate. Will look sensational in a garden bed, a stand alone specimen on a challenging part of your lawn, or planted into a large container in a paved courtyard. These two favourites have long been a popular addition for gardeners in our area. Plenty of stock available now. However get in quick as there has been a lot interest over the weekend. Plant a tree today that will last a lifetime. God bless. Carolyn

12.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 2 7 Grasses... Ornamental grasses provide superb colour in an environmental landscape. Over the past ten years many new varieties have appeared in the Carex Family, especially in the Billycan Series. These plants are made up of wonderful foliage, short and tufty, except for the beautiful weather falls with the striking green and gold weeping foliage. Low maintenance and easy to care for, ideal in either pots or garden beds. Liriope Family is another low growing, lawn alternative. A very compact but spreading plant, will form a very dense border or ground cover. Thrives in full sun or part shade, the dense green foliage always looks good. The Lomandra Family is a taller growing plant with its great contrast, ideal for use around ponds or pools and adapts to most situations. Another one of my favourites is the Dianella Family, Silver Streak being the most popular. Will grow very happily in difficult positions, the green and white gives a wonderful effect. Another beautiful grass is the Miscanthus. Which is very grass like, with lovely feathery plumes. There truly is a grass for any kind of situation. The Kikuya truck is coming to town next week. Please anyone that wants one or one hundred rolls of Kikuya lawn turf, please get in touch with me immediately. The first week of November has brought the warmer weather. For many a lush green lawn is the most effective way to create a visually cooling environment at your home to survive the often brutal January/February heat in our district. God Bless. Carolyn.

11.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 3 Winter Rose Maintenance... One of the most important aspects of the winter gardening season is rose pruning. Rose pruning should be well under way by now. If you haven't started attacking your roses yet, it is crucial that they are cut back hard now, if you want to see the benefits of beautiful blooms in early spring. Once pruning complete, you must thoroughly drench your roses with a good spray of lime sulpher. Lime sulpher will kill any fungal disease in the bushes or on the ground. Two weeks after pruning and sulpher application, a follow up spray of copper oxychloride is highly recommended. The copper is another fungicide that will get any of the nasties that the sulpher missed. After spraying, tuck a small amount of organic fertilizer around the root system, followed by a good thick layer of mulch. When mulching I dont think you can go past lucerne, however sugar cane mulch will do the job. We have received our last dispatch of bare rooted roses. Plenty still available, but they are selling quickly. Put the work in now and be delighting your friends with the gift of roses from your garden this Spring. God bless. Carolyn

10.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 4 Interesting Fruit Trees that Thrive in our Region.... Dwarf fruit trees have grown in popularity with many local gardeners. Ideal for the gardener working with a smaller space as they will not grow as big as a normal fruit tree. Currently we have in stock - Dwarf Golden Queen Peach. This peach has a very appealing golden skin and flesh colour. Perhaps most famous for canning and eats well, direct from the tree. The Dwarf O'Henry is a brightly coloured large peach. Yellow flesh, very sweet and juicy. Very firm fruit, prolific barer. The children will love them. In contrast the Dwarf Apple Pinkerbell grows enormous bright pink coloured fruit. A low maintenance tree that is ideal for the lazy gardener. The beauty of the Dwarfs is that they will do equally well in the ground or planted into a container. Different trees you may not have considered - The quince features large pale yellow fruit, with smooth skin and sweet flavours. Ideal for preserving, jams and pastes. Thrives and bares well in our district. Louquat bares clusters of juicy sweetly flavoured, yellow to orange fruit. A very attractive and curious focal point for your garden. Always difficult to find suppliers, but this season we've been able to secure to beautiful advanced specimens. So many have you been asking, so very pleased to let you all know that the grafted passionfruits have arrived. Plant this season and enjoy the bounty of your own fruit tree for years to come. God bless. Carolyn.

10.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 1 0 Deciduous Trees ... Our beautiful strong, vigorous, grafted trees have started to arrive. Starting with our beloved pears. These favourites are now in stock - Capital Manchurian Aristocrat Bradford Snow Weeping Silver For superb low maintenance, drought tolerant, stunning Autumn colour shade trees for gardens in our district you cant beat the following - Claret Ash Desert Ash White Ash For that boggy position I've always loved the glorious, pendulous Weeping Willow. In my own garden, many a memory has been made with family and friends under our Chinese Elm. The most hardy, vigorous, deciduous tree that will grow in any position in our climate. If you want hardy and quick growing, the Chinese Elm is your guy. I believe unjustifiably the White Cedar has recently fallen from grace. For that extremely tough spot in your garden, at the stockyard or over the dog's kennel I highly recommend the cedar. Once established, requires no attention. Good shade in Summer, allows the sun in in Winter. Two of the prettiest flowering blossom trees we recommend Prunus Nigra with its beautiful claret coloured foliage. Second pick is the Prunus Blireana, also known as the Double Flowering Cherry Plum (pictured). This beauty is massed with pink flowers throughout Spring time. Several favourites on this list but many more of your favourite deciduous trees still to arrive in the coming weeks. Hoping you are all keeping safe and happy. We look forward to seeing you outside enjoying our glorious warm Winter days soon. God bless. Carolyn

06.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 2 6 Mid Spring Gardening... With Summer and holiday time fast approaching it is a great time, before the heat arrives, to look after our gardens. I think we are all familiar with the benefit of water crystals. Great water storage and holding capacity, saves water and time. Great nutrient value and definitely increases plant growth. Another water saving product is Penetraide. This is slightly different to the crystals. With our drying climate, sometimes our soil can become water repellent which makes it difficult for plants. This product is so easy to use, just sprinkle around pot plants, garden beds, fruit trees, shrubs and lawn. Watering well, this product will last up to twelve months. Rock dust is a 100 percent natural mineral fertiliser. It is like giving your plants a multi vitamin. It works by making our soils healthier, especially the heavier soils that we have to contend with in our district. Just arrived is a very good selection of hanging baskets. The wire baskets in many colours and the very strong iron baskets. Also a good selection of good quality hanging plastic baskets, including very large varieties. Many gardeners like to pot them up with red and white petunias, dianthus or strawberries for Christmas. Makes a thoughtful Christmas gift. 04.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S P A R T 7 House Plants... A bush house, shade house or verandah give many gardeners great pleasure with house plants. Beautiful results can be obtained with lush house plants in appropriate pots. A collection of pot plants and healthy hanging baskets can be a satisfying pleasure for the household. A huge beautiful delivery of house plants arriving this week. Undoubtedly at the moment the ficus family is the most popular. So very strong and vigorous, these hardy plants come in many forms and colours. The tough, leathery, flamboyant leaf of the fiddle leaf fig (pictured) are so attractive. The hanging basket ferns are ideal for most areas. Always very popular. Many smaller plants are most suited for benches or tables. Pot into one of our very pretty pots and you have a perfect gift. Dracina, Golden Canes, Pothos all available in smaller sizes. Remember when re potting always use the best quality potting mix and never over water. More house plants are lost through cold soggy roots than any other reason. Hope to see you over the coming long weekend. God bless. Carolyn

04.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 2 2 Herbs... However small or large your garden is, or even if you only possess a hanging basket, you can still grow herbs. The most popular and widely used culinary herbs are mint, basil, coriander, rosemary, thyme, chives, dill and parsley. Many people grow herbs simply for their edible flowers. Many of you wouldnt realise that marigolds, nasturtiums and violas are part of the herb family. Some herbs produce a wonderful fragrance, such as lavender and different varieties of mint. Or others a delicious lemony fragrance such as lemon balm, verbena or lemongrass. A herb garden can become a quiet peaceful place to escape the day to day stresses and gather your thoughts. Many herbs release their scent in the evening. What better place to be after a hectic day. Many herbs have such attractive flowers that they can be grown in the flower garden. You may wish to group herbs together according to their different colours and flavours. Before planting your herb garden, the soil must be dug through very well, compost and animal manure should be added. Some gardeners like to plant from seeds or seedlings, why not do a little of both. Many make very suitable pot plants, such as rosemary or bay tree. Herbs come in fresh every Wednesday and Thursday. Imagine picking herbs from your own garden to add to your favourite family meals. Bellissimo! God bless. Carolyn

01.01.2022 N U R S E R Y N E W S W E E K 2 3 Children's Gardens... It has given us so much pleasure over the last week to see the number of children on holidays, interested in gardening. It may be helping with a large veggie garden or pushing a lawn mower. Gardening does not always need to be on a large scale. Why not plant a tree together that will give shade later on. Show them how deep to dig the hole and back fill it with friable soil, popping in the fertiliser tablet under the root ball. It may be a herb garden in a polystyrene box. Select the herb they enjoy eating and show them how quickly they grow when liquid fertiliser is applied. Point out the difference with organic or granular fertilisers which are long lasting but slow acting, to the liquid that has to be applied often but is quick acting. They might like to plant a pretty pot of red and white pincas or petunias, pointing out that they will be in full flower to greet Santa at Christmas time.' Why not plant a strawberry in a hanging basket. What kid doesnt love strawberries? We have very pretty hanging baskets that would do the job wonderfully. They may like to plant a suculent or a cactus in a pot and give it to a friend or school teacher at the end of term. You are only limited by your imagination. Introduce your child to the joys of garden and it will give them a passion that will reward them for life. Hope to see you soon. God bless. Carolyn
