24.01.2022 Woody Whitelaw - Radio Presenter - Age 32 - @woodywoodlaw Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not? Yes I do. I see mental health as a fitness - the same as I look at physicalfitness. I don't believemental health is something that some people have and others don't. I believeit is something that we all need to work on and put time into. And I also believeit is something that we should speak of like we speakof our... physical fitness. What do you do to unwind from work? How does this help you? I listen to classical music and have a peppermint tea haha. This is no word of a lie. Really relaxes me (there is an album called Classical Chillout that I highly recommend). What is the most valuable hour of your day? Why? The first hour. If you win the morning, you win the day. The first thing I do when I wake up is exercise. If I get the first hour right, I feel like I can take anything on. It also helps settle my otherwise anxious mind - if i don't do some sort of exercise, I tend to feel restless and a bit irritable (doesn't have to be intense exercise. Just acheeky sweat session. Makes it easier to do it every day. If the sessions were all really intense, I know I would personally start skipping days) Newly formed habits/routines (if any) you're planning to take with you into 2021? Breathing exercises. I guess it's a type of meditation with a primary focus on the breath (if interested, the Wim Hof App is where I follow these breathing routines) Thanks for sharing, Woody #formenmhm #formenaustralia #mentalhealthmonth #mentalhealthmatters #everydaypeople
20.01.2022 Toby Brocklehurst - Media Group Sales Manager - Age 33 - @tobybrocky Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not?: I certainly do it’s so important to be aware that none of us are immune to negative turns in our mental health, big or small. Having my mental health means I can be present with my family on weekends, can enjoy the small moments at home and feel connected to those around me. I know these are the things that b...ring me joy, so leaning into them whenever there’s other challenges in my life is so important. I think right now, more than ever before, I have felt conscious of my mental health and that of those around me. What do you want to do more of in your life? Why? As a Victorian, travel is pretty high on that list! That said, we have been loving exploring our backyard and it has given us an appetite to see more of our own state. Post-lockdown, we are keen to do more short trips weekends away as a family, or even trips with some of our friends. Short breaks don’t break the budget, but give us a good opportunity to switch off from work for a couple of days. Newly formed habits/routines (if any) you're planning to take with you into 2021? Having a toddler, we are already on a pretty strict routine across the day, but one thing we have introduced into our year has been a regular workout routine; every second day we are doing Nike workouts in the playroom (often with Logan trying to clamber over us as we attempt a push-up or downward dog!). Walking has also been important to us and now most weekends we are pushing the pram around the suburbs for 2+ hrs a day. Both of these aspects to our routines have helped our mental and physical health and we’d be determined to carry them both past lockdown. 17.01.2022 Scott Sherwen - Solicitor - Age 31 Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not? Every day.Mental health to me means being clear in the head and sound in the mind. It means being motivated and driven towards a personal goal, either in a professional or personal context (ie such as achieving a fitness goal or doing something with or for loved ones). Do you have an exercise routine? If so, what does it look like? How has it ...had to evolve with COVID? Why do you have one? Yes, I have had a solid exercise routine since moving to Sydney in 2015. My day generally starts at 5am. I am now in a routine of doing a 15-20 minute core/push ups/stretching class (depending on how motivated I am feeling) followed by a 15-20 minute run. I then usually ride to and from work. The run was followed by a swim at the beach, but now I only swim on weeks as am no longer at Bondi. The run/ride are absolutely crucial to my head space. I would say it is 90% mental and 10% physical. I feel assertive and alert, with a clear mind after every run. I prefer to exercise in the morning and relax at night. What do you do to unwind from work? How does this help you? I love getting home from work, cooking something and spending time with my fiancée and my pup. 17.01.2022 Stuart de Krester - Sales Coach - Age 31 - @stuartdekretser Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not?Every day I will think about my mental health. As a coach and mentor, I believe that understanding where you are ‘at’ enables you to give the best version of yourself. to you first and foremost, but in turn also allows others to embrace you as a human and what you have to give. What do you do to unwind from work? How doe...s this help you?The best medicine for me to unwind from work is to cook! Coming from a Sri Lankan household, and a family that is known for having great cooks, growing up the kitchen was where everything was discussed. Add to that the new working environment, food gets my creative juices flowing and when you make good food, its inevitable you’ll always have great company! What do you want to do more of in your life? Why?I think taking more time to discover the simple things: be it a great album (on vinyl), a great walk, an amazing recipe or even just taking time to hang out away from a screen. COVID has really shaken things up for so many and the uncomplicated, simple things remind me that you don’t need much to be happy. What’s the one thing you can’t live without? Why? How does this help your wellbeing?Great tunes! Music to me is like food - it has the power to do so much. Music has enabled me to create some incredibly effective emotional anchors which help me regulate, prepare for something big or even wind down. From Stevie Wonder to Rufus Du Sol or even Fat Freddy’s Drop, each play a role in helping me stay positive and ‘feel’ my way through the day. 16.01.2022 Blake Worrall-Thompson - Lifestyle & Performance Coach - Age 36 - @blakeworrallthompson @themomentumlifestyle Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not? I think about it daily. Its had such a big impact on my family and even me at certain stages throughout my life. I think its a big thing for us to tackle and while the stigma has worn away over the past few years I still think we have a lot of work to do in creating suppo...rt platforms and networks to help those that are struggling. What do you do to unwind from work? How does this help you? I have a number of outlets. Meditation. Chats with friends. Reading. Training. I'm lucky that I've found a formula that works for me so even when I have those moments where I am struggling I can stay on course with those things that help me. What’s the one thing you can’t live without? Why? How does this help your wellbeing? Training and personal development. The training helps me feel physically and mentally strong and the personal development means that I am always moving forward. I hate feeling 'stuck'. 15.01.2022 Lex Amal - Architect and Entrepreneur - Age 32 - @mrgumbatron Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not? Yes, an understanding of mental health is vital, our brains are a vital muscle in our body and it too needs exercising and taking care of for optimal performance, the same way in which we train our bodies physically. Mental health is very important to me, being in the best state of mind possible I know means we are fun...ctioning as the best version of ourselves, it allows us to make decisions with clarity and conviction. What do you do to unwind from work? How does this help you? People who know me know I'm a serial workaholic, as passionate as I am about my work, I also have a passion for automobiles, unwinding from work means tinkering away in the garage for hours. I am quite the inquisitive type and love to pull things apart, learn how they work, and eventually put them back together, this includes getting my hands dirty and playing with engine blocks and anything mechanical. This helps me destress and focus my energy on something that is highly methodical rather than creative, which ultimately helps recalibrate my mind. What have been the most telling truths you have discovered about yourself in 2020?2020 has been an influential year to many including myself, in the midst of Covid-19, I departed a stable job and then went on to set up not one, but three new businesses. One of which has a strong focus on corporate social responsibility initiatives in the hospitality industry. In 2020 I discovered how important it is to maintain a positive mindset in difficult times and to create your own opportunities. I also came to realise that my ethos to business is incredibly hands-on, I'm not sure if it's a good or bad trait but It means I care about all the little things. Speaking of little things, "take time to smell the roses", happiness can be found in the small things. 12.01.2022 Tristan Bowman - Director - Age 32 - @tdubyaa Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not? I think about stress and how to manage stress; managing it and dealing with it helps me keep on an even plane. Dealing with life’s stresses head on keeps me from kicking the can down the road and letting it snowball.... Who has been your rock this year? Can be a person, your dog or even your noise cancelling headphones! My wife Bec has been a rock for me for a long time, but none more so than the last year. Being in lockdown with your best friend isn’t so bad, and we’ve helped keep each other positive as much as we can. We’ve just had our first child and being able to focus on family has been a really good grounding point through 2020. Taking half an hour at the start of each day to look after Billy has been amazing, and an opportunity that wouldn’t be there had it not been for Covid. It gives me the chance to bond with him, and Bec a chance to get some z’s! Do you have an exercise routine? If so, what does it look like? How has it had to evolve with COVID? Why do you have one? Running is my go to. Putting on some music or a podcast and getting out there is a great way to start or finish my day. There isn’t really a routine as it really depends on the day. It’s a bit overdone but the old saying that you never feels worse after a run really rings true now. You can be cooped up in your home office all day and having even just half an hour out on the pavement is re-energising and re-invigzorating. 12.01.2022 Joshua Hogg - Advertising - Age 28 - @thomasjosh Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not?: Mental health means taking the time to do the things that make you, you and supporting friends and family to do the same.... What do you do to unwind from work? How does this help you? I spend time in the vegetable garden, play video games with my brothers, and play guitar. This helps me connect with nature, family, and myself. What’s the one thing you can’t live without? Why? How does this help your wellbeing? Morning coffee. I’m a stickler routine, it gives me a sense of control, certainty and balance in my life. Who has been your rock this year? Can be a person, your dog or even your noise cancelling headphones! My partner. Working and living at home in lockdown for the majority of year, and spending nearly 24/7 with the same person is almost certainly a recipe for tension. However, I have found that having them and the certainty they create has been an antidote to the uncertainty of everything else. 10.01.2022 James Lennon - Advertising - Age 22 Do you have an exercise routine? If so, what does it look like? How has it had to evolve with COVID? Why do you have one? My pre-covid exercise routine consisted of swimming, using the gym (weights) and playing squash weekly. Due to all three of those activities being restricted due to covid, I began running for exercise.... Would you like to be able to speak to your friends about your wellbeing? What would make it easier to do so? I would. My housemate has struggled with mental health challenges in the past and has now pursued a career in psychology. He therefore is very open and educating on the matter, and is likely the reason I have been instilled with the notion of addressing mental health very seriously and comprehensively. This has made it easy for many of my mates too a very fortunate lot. What is the most valuable hour of your day? Why? I have never considered this question until now. And perhaps because its Friday arvo my answer is a little biased, but I think the hour following leaving work/getting home is the most valuable for me. This is when I leave work and reconnect with my mates, have a laugh and enter relaxation. It is incredible how much this period can change a mood. Again, this is very privileged position, as I live with good mates who allow for this sensation.
08.01.2022 Greg Brydon - Office Manager / Auctioneer - Age 28 - @gbrydon.xcii Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not? Health in general is everything. Keeping not just a healthy body, but a healthy mind for me is the key to consistency. I have a strong focus on mental health and understand it is not possible to be 'up' or completely happy at all times, but working towards a fundamentally stable & healthy lifestyle is a key factor.... Do you have an exercise routine? If so, what does it look like? How has it had to evolve with COVID? Why do you have one? Regular exercise and having a set routine is a fundamental part of my life. Whilst COVID has changed this immensely, I still maintain as much of a routine as possible. I am lucky enough to live 500m from the beach and take my dog for a 5-10km walk every morning. I am definitely a morning person and am usually out by 5:30-6am. Whilst access to gyms is limited, I have reduced the amount of weight training, however still have 2-3 PT sessions a week which a reduction from the usual 6-7 gym sessions a week. What do you want to do more of in your life? Why? Spend time with the people I love, the people that inspire me & the people that support me. This year has taught me to appreciate the simple things. A great conversation, a good laugh & that time is precious. As a culture, we have spent so much time working to live. Having a great balance is now at the forefront of everything I do and making time for connection with those important to you is so vital. What is the most valuable hour of your day? Why? My most valuable hour of the day is my first. It sets the tone for the day. It gives you a platform to work off. I find the more clarity & fresh air I have in the first 60 minutes of being awake, the more likely I am to have a productive day. 05.01.2022 Himal Pillay - Motivational Speaker - Age 22 - @himalpillay Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not?"Definitely! Mental health to me, refers to my inner world. I believe that if this inner world is taken care of well-enough then we become our most effective in our family, work, social and health aspects of our life. Mental health is so important to me as it is where I derive my mental equipoise, peace and clarity from. A...s much as I work on my craft, my relationships and connections in the outside world it's just as important if not more, that my inner world is taken care of. What is the most valuable hour of your day? Why?10pm - 11pm is my most valuable hour of the day. This is the time where I take care of my mental health and focus on self-improvement. I usually shut off my computer, go to a little corner in my room and introspect on my thoughts and happenings of the day and see what went well and what I could've done to be a little better. I follow this up with a bit of breath work and meditation before heading off to sleep. What have been the most telling truths you have discovered about yourself in 2020?I have learnt that how I feel is greatly dependent on my environment. We couldn't go to the gym anymore because of lockdown and so I lost motivation to workout. As a result of this, I have invested, time and money into creating purpose-spaces. For example, I have a home office that's neat and designed in such a way so that when I sit down at my desk, I feel motivated and productive. I also have an area in the house that I use solely for workouts and don't do any other activities there. 04.01.2022 Demetrio Zema - Lawyer - Age 33 - @lawsquared Do you think about mental health? If so, what does mental health mean to you? If not, why not? I think of a state of well being, that is, one’s own ability to tackle the challenges and successes that life brings/throws at us every day.... Do you have an exercise routine? If so, what does it look like? How has it had to evolve with COVID? Why do you have one? In 2016 I started a business and prior to that, I had an excellent routine, gym 6 days a week, eating healthy meals, meal prepping on a weekend and mentally and physically in good shape. For the last 4 or so years, I changed that routine and it was all focused on building a business and putting business and my team ahead of myself. This included travelling and getting on a plane 3-5 times a week! COVID has forced me to re-think my schedule, ground myself (literally) and I have now gotten back into daily exercise (sadly not gym) and positive eating habits, all from being home, taking the time to wake up early, go to the markets, source good and fresh food and make time for exercise. What’s been the most difficult time in your life and how did you bounce back? On 23 July 2016, my dad passed away, very unexpectedly and without warning. A minor health complication became fatal and for my mum and I, we were faced with the burden, challenge, shock and reality of his passing. At the age of 28, I wasn’t ready to loose a parent, I don’t think we ever are, but that period taught me a lot, about who my true friends were, who my supporters were, and who was willing to step in, step up and help, guide, support and care in any way they could and just how mentally strong I was and had to become. It was tough, I was 4 months into starting a new business, with 5 employees and my world as I knew it had been completely flipped upside down. I don’t think one ever quite bounces back from the unexpected death of a parent, but you learn to live with a new normal and you learn to appreciate life that little bit more and those that are in it with you.
