25.01.2022 Victoria is declaring a State of Emergency from noon today, but you already know that. We all know everything we can possibly know about this virus, it is on our screens and our inboxes and our minds. In our current series on how to do business in the age of self isolation, we bring you a more lighthearted (but incredibly necessary) chapter. How to efficiently run a team while working remotely. For small business, this is hard. Much of our work culture is about conversation...s. We assign tasks by chatting, we have meetings, do pow-wows, and now we cant. More importantly, we cant debrief, destress, or disengage in the way we used to. There is some technological benefits that we will recommend to ensure that your team (and business) operate smoothly. Step 1: If you have Office 365 you are already paying for a feature called Teams. Get everyone logged in. Get them to use the "busy/available" feature like its 2001 and MSN is life. Step 2: try the video conferencing feature of Teams. (If you are not using Teams, check out the video conferencing feature of whatever application you do use to communicate. (Slack, Skype.) Step 3: Schedule daily meetings (I recommend 9.30am) with your people and explain that everyone is going to be joining the videoconference. Do a trial run today until everyone can log in. Step 4: Download the Headspace app and guide your team every day through a 4 minute meditation to ensure they are focused and coping. Step 5: Schedule check in on Wednesdays (say 11am) to do a review of how everyone is working, what tasks they are on, and where they need support. Assign tasks that need to be finished by Friday. You may need to make those check-ins daily if you have juniors working for you. Step 6: Schedule your team bonding session to be done remotely. We all happen to have a Nintendo Switch, but your team may require something else. Spend an hour chasing Mario around a track together. Step 7: Your lawyer and business advisors can offer guidance and support. Feel free to call us. 03 9225 5266.

19.01.2022 Forty Four Degrees is very excited to welcome Nicole Wilson in the role of Special Counsel. Nicole has worked in law and corrections since 1997, including more than a decade as a practicing lawyer. She is highly experienced in a broad range of commercial litigation, particularly relating to property, construction and contractual disputes. A core focus of Nicoles practice is proactively assisting clients to ascertain and achieve their key objectives, rather than simply respo...nding to events as they arise. More importantly, Nicole is an amazing human being, a wonderful mum, a great friend, and a perfectly average knitter. Get in touch with Nicole via [email protected] or 03 9225 5266.
17.01.2022 As your lawyers, we feel we need to advise as follows: Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful mums, including those we have lost or who have felt loss. However you entered the sisterhood of motherhood, whether you have looked after us as a parent, step parent, foster parent, grand parent, the aunt who does all the work, the older sister who has been the mother, the Premier who has been really trying to get us take our current situation responsibly and see us safely through ...a pandemic even though we keep trying to break "our curfew" and get arrested... We see you. Your hard work, often unpaid, often unacknowledged, has created a beautiful, healthy, striving community. For Mothers Day this year we will give you all you have ever really wanted: your children to be safe. We will do this by not breaking current Isolation Regulations and responsibly staying home in our pjs, watching Netflix, and forgetting that tomorrow is a workday. Executive summary: Stay home, stay safe.

15.01.2022 Are you setting up your virtual office today in anticipation of the upcoming working from home mandates? Do you have staff that need to go through these steps? When we advise clients on risk management, we always draw attention to the increased cybersecurity issues when employees are left to make their own decisions about password management and virtual office set up. Having an appropriate policy in place will protect your business (and it may be a requirement of your insurance policy). In response to the current situation, the team at 1Password has removed trail limits to ensure that you get access to a password manager.
