25.01.2022 We feel like our inability to somehow make our lives work is because we are failures. Us personally. When in fact, the system is set up to make us fail. The system may have worked in the 1960s, but is really freaking difficult to manage today. The delicate juggle of babysitting, preschool, and daycare is precarious at the best of times but throw in a late meeting, an evening shift or a sick kid and watch it (us) all come crashing down in a screaming heap. If you are a so...le parent this becomes a zillion trillion times harder. If you are just starting your little ones at school this year or you have been braving this already for years we salute you.

22.01.2022 Hello to all our beautiful members, families, friends & community. We just wanted to check in and see how everyone is? It has been a traumatic start to the year with so many in our nation affected by the recent fires. Sometimes it can take a while for us to realise that we might be personally affected by events such as these. While the immediate victims can experience trauma there is also vicarious trauma that can affect bystanders.... Vicarious trauma, also known as secondary trauma, can be described as indirect exposure to a traumatic event through first-hand account or narrative of that event. Any person who has a significant relationship with a survivor of trauma may also come to experience secondary traumatisation. This post below contains some really useful information on how to deal with traumatic events with children. If you are struggling please reach out. 19.01.2022 The following post has been copied from elsewhere and lightly altered. We are thinking of you all. Dear Parents,... You might be inclined to create a minute by minute schedule for your kids. You have high hopes of hours of learning, including online activities, science experiments, and book reports. Youll limit technology until everything is done! But heres the thing... Our kids are just as scared as we are right now. Our kids not only can hear everything that is going on around them, but they feel our tension and anxiety. They have never experienced anything like this before. Although the idea of being off of school for weeks sounds awesome, they are probably picturing a fun time like summer break, not the reality of being trapped at home and not seeing their friends. Over the coming weeks, you may see an increase in behavior issues with your kids. Whether its anxiety, or anger, sadness, or protest that they cant do things normally - it will happen. You may see more meltdowns and tantrums, or oppositional behavior in the coming weeks. This is normal and expected under these circumstances. What kids need right now is to feel comforted and loved. To feel like its all going to be ok. And that might mean that you tear up your perfect schedule and love on your kids a bit more. Play outside in the yard and lay watching the clouds drift by together. Bake cookies and paint pictures. Play board games, video games with your kids and watch movies. Do a science experiment together or find virtual field trips of the zoo. Start a book and read together as a family. Build a blanket fort and camp in the backyard. Snuggle under warm blankets and do nothing. Dont worry about them regressing in school. Every single kid is in this boat and they all will be ok. When they are back in the classroom, they will have the support of the community and teachers and you. They will course correct and teachers will meet them where they are. Dont pick fights with your kids because they dont want to do math. Try not to get into battles with them if your kids won't follow the schedule. Break up the learning with fun times and if they are resisting just leave it and go back to it later in the day. If I can leave you with one thing, its this: at the end of all of this, your kids mental health will be more important than their academic skills. And how they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did during these weeks are long gone. So keep that in mind, every single day. Stay safe.

19.01.2022 Happy Thursday to our wonderful community. How are you today? As parents its so easy to lose sight of our own well being especially with all the craziness this year has brought with it.... How are you looking after yourself? Here are some simple ideas you might like to try Create some enjoyable personal goals for yourself and track your progress Find or create some me time and do something that you enjoy Start a gratitude journal and write what you are grateful for each day Read an inspirational book and write your thoughts about the book in your journal Take a long walk and enjoy nature then write about your experience in your journal Try a new exercise and stretch afterwards Just do nothing or take a power nap Notice the amount of time spent watching TV which is full of negative repetitive bad news. Take some time away from it. Listen to Podcasts that are encouraging and supportive. Download an app and practice mindfulness regularly - ie ,Smiling Mind, Stop Breathe & Think, UCLA Mindful, 10% Happier, Calm, Headspace Clean out an area of your home or rearrange your living area. Clean out the apps and phone numbers on your phone and set a timer to remind you to stop what your doing and take 5 deep slow breaths every day, relax your shoulders & neck and any tension you might be holding in the body. Get up from whatever you are doing and have a glass of water. Think of someone you love, close your eyes and really imagine every detail about them, what they sound like, the clothes they wear, the colour and style of their hair, how they make you feel, then write them a letter telling them how much they are loved, get the kids involved by drawing pictures or writing their own letters as well. Show up for yourself with kindness. Remember that all feelings and thoughts are OK. Reach out and ask for help if you are struggling. What are your favourite positive coping strategies? 17.01.2022 They say it takes a village, but finding a village or even trying to create one is hard when your juggling all of the things all of the time in the face of strangulating financial constraints, constant stigma and ruthless shaming by the media. Heres what lone parents need: A friend. A meal. An offer to drive a child somewhere. A babysitter. A night off. A box of healthy groceries, help with an occasional bill, A tank of petrol, your understanding and support instead of judgement and your voice standing up with us fighting back against the stigma that is endlessly tearing us down right across the media. We are fine, sometimes, but we are also probably not fine.

If I could change the words in the pic below I would. 550 reasons to keep breathing without having a panic attack a...nd/or having parents AND children spiralling into mental health issues and/ or staying with a violent and abusive partner issues because the Newstart allowance is NOT enough to live on for anybody!!
