20.01.2022 Have you been thinking of developing a track system for your horses but don’t know where to start? This video explains the various things you should consider while showing you around their fabulous track. https://youtu.be/YHurNwnRINE
20.01.2022 Help! My horses hooves are cracking Right now I am seeing a lot of superficial hoof cracks. These are small vertical fractures of the outer hoof wall. While they are not a huge issue they can be a sign that the horses hoof integrity and/or living conditions are not ideal. Would your horse benefit from a hoof supplement or other dietary change? Do they need more frequent trimming to prevent flare and weakening of the hoof wall? Can you keep them out of the mud? Where I am in Gippsland the latter is highly unlikely. If your horse has these cracks, do what you can, but dont panic. Keep an eye on them and let your trimmer or farrier know if you have any concerns. https://horse-canada.com///superficial-equine-hoof-cracks/
19.01.2022 Amazing footage of a venogram showing blood flowing through the hoof. Can you imagine the damage when sensitive tissue becomes inflamed and swells during laminitis? Perfusion is compromised, tissue dies, mechanisms fail. No wonder is such a tragic disease.
19.01.2022 Good advice here. Shade is very important for me. It doesnt take much for my brain to fry and then Im no good for the rest of the day.

17.01.2022 Worm smart, not hard. This is a great service. I go past the Wormcheck lab most Mondays, so if anyone local to me would like me to drop off samples for them Id be happy to do so. Only $10 per horse when delivered to the lab and you will get your report via email.

12.01.2022 *Bread bags and laundry sanitiser* Its a long time (years) since Ive done this, but after many months of wet conditions and green grass Argies feet are showing some wall separation. The separation itself is not a huge issue, but it is a sign that hooves are not in optimal health. As the separation progresses the lower wall can weaken, chip, crack and/or flare. The compromised hoof capsule can make the sole prone to bruising and abscesses. Bacteria make their way into the... gaps leading to white line disease and, most commonly, seedy toe. Dirt trapped in these little cracks can cause abscesses too. What looks like a bit of dirt in the hoof wall is a flag to horse (and donkey) owners to review our management practices for the current conditions. 1.The diet may need supplementing and/or access to pasture reduced. 2. Reduce access to muddy areas and other fun, wet places horses like to hang out. 3.More frequent trims may help to keep the walls from flaring and splitting and limit opportunities for infections to start. 4. Practicing some hoof hygiene, with disinfectant soaks for example, can reduce the load of harmful bacteria and help prevent more serious infections. Do your horses hooves show signs of separation? If you live in Gippsland its quite likely that they do. If they dont, a gold star for you!!

10.01.2022 This is where I bought many of the fodder plants I have put around my horses track system. Im so excited to see them thriving despite being planted over the summer. Im definitely going back to get more. Maybe some plants for the birds and the bees as well as the horses.

07.01.2022 Dead legs and dissections teach us a lot. My understanding is that it is not just frog pressure moving the blood but the hydraulic sucking force created from the movement of the lateral cartilages (Bowker). When they are pushed apart, blood is drawn into the hoof. When they come back together, as demonstrated by Dr. Teskeys thumb pressure, blood is released back up the leg. So an overgrown frog with too much pressure, preventing loading of the heel and activation of the d...igital cushion, could have a detrimental effect blood perfusion through the hoof. Insufficient frog would cause overloading of the heels and other hoof structures and possibly cause a horse to shift its weight to its toes. This would also prevent the digital cushion from functioning correctly and affect blood flow. Blood flow is important in the hoof not just because it provides nutrients to the cells, but because it plays an important part in cushioning downward forces, dispersing shock waves and reducing concussion. The digital cushion is not just fatty tissue and cartilage, but blood too. See more
06.01.2022 Is your horse suddenly lame? The extended wet period in Gippsland has made hooves soft and prone to bruising, wall separation, and subsequently, abscesses. Its important to rule out other possible reasons for your horses lameness before assuming he has an abscess though. This article describes some common causes of acute lameness and what you should do if you find your horse on 3 legs. https://thehorse.com//3-legged-lameness-in-horses-the-li/

04.01.2022 There are so many benefits to the track system. My own system continues to develop and now includes a chicane and a bridge, and hundreds of fodder plants. Lucerne trees, old man saltbush, woolly bushes and roses will eventually form edible hedges along the outside of the track.
