25.01.2022 Our philosophy is ‘people caring for people’ and it’s always wonderful to see examples of our team members looking out for both their patients and each other. Rachel Gale has been a staff development co-ordinator for four years and is always searching for opportunities for staff to improve their qualifications and knowledge. Here is her story: I successfully applied for a scholarship for 12 staff to take part in a mental health first aid course, which is one of the many scho...larship opportunities Ramsay offers every year. The scholarships offer fantastic opportunities for clinical and non-clinical staff to develop their skills in areas of interest. I really felt the Mental Health First Aid Course would be useful, as it’s important we care for our patients’ mental health as well as their physical health. In addition to patients in the mental health unit, we discovered that a lot of our patients in the medical department, operating theatres and maternity wards also had some mental health concerns. Completing this course enabled our staff to better deal with this and understand patients from a holistic point of view. The feedback was great; staff felt empowered to better understand our patients and look out for their mental health. They were able to use the new skills in all aspects of general care - from After Hours Managers liaising with patients outside normal hours to those working with perinatal mental health patients and also our surgical staff. I feel very lucky to work at Ramsay, with so many opportunities to develop our skills to enable us to do our job to the best of our ability.

18.01.2022 A TO Z OF PREGNANCY The letter J... J is for JAUNDICE.... Some of you may have heard the term but don’t know or understand exactly what it means so today we outline this in a little more detail. Simply, Jaundice causes the skin and white part of the eyes to go a yellow colour. It’s caused by excess of the pigment bilirubin. It’s generally broken down by the liver but in a baby, they can’t break it down quick enough, giving them that yellow appearance. Whilst it’s usually harmless, it is important that you tell your Doctor so it can be monitored! It’s a common condition in newborns.

Although it doesn’t usually harm the woman or unborn child, severe morning sickness including hyperemesis gravidarum, or morning sickness that includes dehydration and weight loss, requires medical attention. 03.01.2022 A TO Z OF PREGNANCY The letter M.....M is for MASTITIS! Ouch.just reading it gives breastfeeding mums goosebumps! ... Mastitis is generally caused by a blockage in the milk duct which then caused inflammation of the breast tissue. The first symptom of Mastitis is often ‘cold and flu’ like symptoms and generally feeling unwell. Our hospital is more than happy to offer you advice and suggestions when it comes to breastfeeding. Another wonderful resource is The Australian Breastfeeding Association. Their recommendation around things to do to help relieve mastitis includes: Talking to an Australian Breastfeeding Association counsellor. Seeing your Doctor for antibiotics early. Commencing treatment as soon as possible. Resting as much as you can. Keeping the sore breast as empty as possible by feeding your baby often. Applying warmth to the sore breast for up to a few minutes before a feed. Feeding from the sore breast first, when your baby's sucking is stronger. Massaging the breast gently while your baby feeds. Hand expressing if needed, before, after and between feeds. Cold packs after a feed may help relieve pain and reduce swelling. Breastfeed often. Hand express if your breast feels full and your baby won't feed often. Early treatment is important to reduce any disruption to you and your babies feeding.

02.01.2022 - Our People - It’s always heart-warming to see examples of our team members embodying our philosophy of ‘people caring for people’. Mollie McDonald is an endorsed enrolled nurse in one of Ramsay’s perinatal mental health units in Victoria. Here is her story:... My mother was a nurse, so it was something I was always interested in doing. One thing I discovered very early on is that, as a nurse, you are constantly continuing your education. I completed 18 months study at Swinburne University and I have started studying again to become a Registered Nurse. When I heard about the opportunity to apply for a scholarship for the Mental Health First Aid Course, it was something I was really keen to put my hand up for. The course appealed to me as I work in the Perinatal Mental Health ward and I wanted to not only improve my knowledge of mental health issues but also my confidence with patients. The 12-hour course was run over a number of days and I really got a lot out of it; I’ve already started to implement some of the strategies I learned. It has reaffirmed how important it is to take a holistic approach to dealing with mental health issues. My skills have definitely improved and I am much more confident in my decision making around risk assessment. Doing the course as a group helped me build relationships with people in other parts of the hospital and encouraged us to feel more united as a team. It is definitely something I would recommend to my colleagues. It was great to be given the opportunity to do this course, particularly for those who are fairly new to nursing. I’ll be on the lookout for other Ramsay scholarship opportunities to further improve my skills.

01.01.2022 DAY 7 FEEL GOOD FRIDAY Serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins are famously happy hormones that promote positive feelings like pleasure, happiness, and even love. Research on the science behind happiness indicates that through exercise and positive self-talk, we can trigger some of these feel-good hormones.... Your challenge for today is to take a moment to invest in self-compassion. Take five minutes to be with yourself and acknowledge your awesomeness. Write down your mantra! Share how you feel about completing the challenge with #RHCMentalhealth
