12.01.2022 Fraser Island beaches are made up of silica sand and heavy mineral deposits (the "black" sands) such as rutile, ilmenite, monazite and zircon. When water (rain, creeks, high tides) and wind wash away the light white sands the heavier mineral sands remain on the beach. Sand mining on Fraser Island began in 1949 and after environmentalists took the case to the Australian High Court sand mining was ceased in 1976 due to environmental impacts.

10.01.2022 Fraser Island Turtles....this is the time of year (Nov-Jan) when hundreds of majestic sea turtles make their journey to the shores of Fraser Island to lay their eggs. We were fortunate last night to witness this Mum and share in her rhythmic trance while she dug her nest then layed her precious eggs...what a special treat.
