20.01.2022 Dear SFID Supporters, Many people are asking what they can do and whilst we are not permitted on the Island and therefore cannot fundraise for medical assistance for injured animals, we can however keep up surveillance in the air. The roads are too dangerous to travel on, the barges are not taking people to the Island and Kingfisher has been evacuated. We can however keep you updated with aerial photographs, videos and commentaries via aerial surveillance. Yesterday our T...eam were in the air for almost 2 hours, and reported burnt areas North, South, East and West, but they were also able to fly low enough to scan the beach and in between bush in an attempt to see if any wildlife was making it to the beach and if any animals were in need of urgent medical treatment. Such surveillance costs $1,200 per 1.5 hours in the air. If you or anyone can help with donations, please could you donate via our website www.savefraserislanddingoes.com or direct into Save Fraser Island Dingoes Account BSB 034-136 Account 303196. All donations are tax deductible. We have also been in contact with HSI (Humane Society International) who will seek permission to access the Island when considered safe. If they are granted access,we will support them in any way we can. I'm happy to receive e-mails or phone calls on 0741241979. Kind Regards, Karin Kilpatrick Secretary/Treasurer SFID Inc 1A37577 Hervey Bay Qld 4655 PHOTO CREDIT Jennifer Parkhurst.
20.01.2022 Kingfisher has been evacuated, Ground crews have been withdrawn because it is too dangerous. The only thing holding the fire back at the moment are the water bombers.
17.01.2022 The fact is that feeding the dingoes would NOT change the animals reaction to a small child entering their territory. Dingoes are naturally inquisitive and curious and would instinctively investigate the appearance of something unfamiliar, such as a toddler, regardless of how well fed they may be. They do not normally see humans as food, but rather a food source, which is the problem. That being said they are opportunistic hunters and scavengers and a small child would be easy prey. The moral of the story is that accidents can happen and children can get away from their parents care, but when it happens on K'gari it can have very serious consequences. We wish the child a speedy recovery.
16.01.2022 This is horrendous.
15.01.2022 More disturbing footage.
15.01.2022 RANGERS INVESTIGATING AFTER DINGO KILLED IN VEHICLE STRIKE. by Carlie Walker Investigations are being carried out after a dingo was killed in vehicle strike on Fraser Island.... The incident happened on the beachfront north of Cornwall’s Break Road on April 13. Rangers believe the dingo was hit by a car while foraging alone on the beach. The vehicle tracks suggest the vehicle has not stopped or swerved around the dingo. Rangers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward by contacting the Department of Environment and Science on 13 QGOV (13 74 68). So far this year, one dingo has been struck and killed by a vehicle, while another was run over post-mortem after being killed through dingo pack fighting.
14.01.2022 SFID MEDIA STATEMENT. 29 Nov. The fires on Fraser remain in the headlines and in the hearts of all those concerned about the devastation that... is sweeping across the Island. The smoke continues to impact regional areas while the flames devour the vegetation and wildlife. Whilst the QPWS fire management objectives are 'to protect the public and their communities and protect critical infrastructure and assets many of us are anxious and disturbed by the scale of destruction to habitat. Last estimate was more than 72,000 hectares have burnt since the fires started from an illegal campfire on October 14. An out of control fire in inaccessible forest on a sand Island is extremely difficult to manage, that is why it is hard to understand why action wasn't taken over a month ago when there was an opportunity to contain it. The long term consequences of losing so much habitat, especially in a closed ecosystem such as K'gari, are largely unknown. We do know that all species are interdependent and rely on each other for survival, any change in the population of one species can have a flow on effect to all. There are many vulnerable and endangered species on K'gari, if we lose even one it could irrevocably change the very fragile and unique ecosystem that is the K'gari we know today. As the smoke and flames continue to fill the air we hope all those fighting the fires on the ground and in the air stay safe and we pray for rain. Cheryl Bryant (Save Fraser Island Dingoes Inc.) 03.01.2022 Rangers are concerned that dingo attacks will continue on Fraser Island if visitors keep feeding them, or getting in close for a selfie. Nine infringement notic...es have already been issued this year, and the Department of Environment and Science warns that change is needed now. www.7NEWS.com.au #7NEWS
02.01.2022 A WARNING is in place for a fire burning near Cathedrals at Fraser Island where conditions are getting worse. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services is urging those in the area to follow their bushfire survival plan now. "If you do not have a plan, your safest option is to leave now if it is clear to do so. If you are not in the area, do not return, as conditions are too dangerous.
