24.01.2022 Check out these glorious glasses with frames featuring artwork by Rheanna Lotter, a Yuin woman who also runs Ngandabaa Aboriginal Art. They're the latest limited edition glasses from our partner Specsavers Australia and every pair sold will help reach the target of $125,000 to go towards our work in Australia. That will help #ClosetheGap in #eyehealth and work to ensure more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have access to eye care and eyewear.

23.01.2022 It's International Day of Older Persons and we were reminded of the wonderful 87-year-old who we met five years ago - Madam Mey. She was completely blind from untreated cataract before a Foundation-supported eye camp helped her see again. Back home, she watched the toddlers play and, when one lost his beanie, she walked over to place it back on his head before returning to her chair. Such a small action but, for Madam Mey, pure bliss.... United Nations #UNIDOP #TBT

23.01.2022 You HAVE to watch as a shy little smile creeps across Truat's face as she realises how well she can see after her eye surgery! Seven-year-old Truat was living an isolated life but this relatively quick and simple surgery meant she could smile again and look forward to a new life. 23.01.2022 Hi, my name is Annette Houston, and I run The Fred Hollows Foundation’s Supporter Services team. I have my own connection to Fred I’d like to share: I’ve been with The Foundation for more than 25 years - in fact, I first met Fred when I was his Secretary at the Prince of Wales Hospital Eye Clinic in 1988. I remember being in awe of 'Prof', a man who showed empathy to his patients and treated people equally be they an MP or a prisoner. I was also a bit scared of him at first.... He was gruff and to the point, and did not have time for fools. You had to do your job and do it to your best ability. He did not accept any less. I respected Fred’s values and beliefs, and these have carried over to The Fred Hollows Foundation. By sharing these inspiring stories about Fred and the history of The Foundation, we’re passing the torch to others. Share YOUR story in the comments here or with a post using #MyFredMoments... thanks! #RememberingFred

22.01.2022 "When we open the eyes for the patient, it makes the doctor very happy too - very happy to see we can restore sight for the patient. "(But) we cannot do it alone... thank you!" says Dr Meng from the National Eye Health Program for Cambodia. SEE more about our work there at https://bit.ly/HelpNgin... #Cambodia #eyehealth

20.01.2022 #DidYouKnow: There are 1.1 billion people globally with vision loss; Vision loss is projected to affect 1.7 billion people in 2050; 90% of vision loss is avoidable; Vision loss is driven by inequality.... 19.01.2022 #TBT: It was this week in 2002 that our Ambassador Susie O'Neill celebrated a special Schools Day at Greystanes High School - Official in Sydney. There were #fundraising activities and the cataract games, where sports were undertaken while wearing 'cataract glasses' that mimic obscured vision. How time flies!... : Peter Carrette

17.01.2022 Looking after your #eyehealth is so important, especially with increased screen time in lockdown and working from home. One way to do that is to get regular eye checks. For #WorldSightDay, we want to urge you to make sure you get an eye check up, especially if you're a little older, and you can do that for free with our friends at Specsavers.

16.01.2022 Several years ago, I was in the south-west of China when two tall African men heard me speaking English. "Are you Australian?" Asked one. "Yes."... "Do you know Fred Hollows?" asked the other. "Oh, have you heard of him?" "He trained us," they replied. They were both doctors from Eritrea and were travelling in remote areas of China, teaching doctors what Fred Hollows had taught them. How great, to actually meet people who were continuing Fred's good work. Audrey wrote to us recently. If you have a #MyFredMoments, share it in the comments here... : training cataract surgeons in Guangx Province, #China.

14.01.2022 Happy #GivingTuesday! But, what can you do to #help on a day like today? You could: look up Workplace Giving, start your own fundraiser, or join Fred's Team! SEE how to do all those things at: https://bit.ly/GivingTuesdayFH... ping GivingTuesday Australia

14.01.2022 Today is Global Handwashing Day and it's never been so important, even for someone like Hollywood actor and Foundation ambassador Joel Edgerton. Here he is with some clever kids in Ethiopia getting a run through the finer details of one of the most important tools in stopping the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness, trachoma, as well as coronavirus. #GlobalHandwashingDay #HandHygieneforAll

13.01.2022 Meet Charlie, our newest ACT Junior Ambassador. Charlie earned that recognition for demonstrating Giralang Primary School's values of caring, cooperation and courtesy, and leading an initiative to revitalise a garden and share with other students how local Aboriginal Peoples use plants to source food and medicine. Congratulations, Charlie, we can't wait to see how the garden goes.... And WATCH this space for more of our recent #HumanityAward recipients... ping Giralang Primary School P&C, #ACT

12.01.2022 "When the patches come off, these eyes that were blind yesterday now look at you with #joy," writes Emily Bissland for ABC News. "Joel (Edgerton) watches his friend and hero Dr Ruit perform swift cataract removals and intraocular lens replacements, completing some 70 operations in one day." 11.01.2022 CHILDREN ARE AT RISK OF PERMANENT BLINDNESS If we don’t reach these #children in time, their blindness could become permanent. Your donation can help deliver a #school eye screening camp so that we can reach more children like Truat (pictured) in countries such as Vietnam. SEE how: http://bit.ly/MeetTruat

11.01.2022 "I worked with Fred years ago at a place called Wee Waa," Bev writes. "I remember lots of things, some funny, some sad, but about Fred himself: his humour, his caring and gentle manner, (and) his understanding of the people around him and those he treated." Such moving memories, and you can share YOUR #MyFredMoments in the comments here or with a post of your own using the hashtag. Thanks!... : Fred with a young patient during the National Trachoma and Eye Health Program in the '70s.

10.01.2022 We've just had our ninth Fred Hollows Humanity Award recognising Year 6 students following in Fred's footsteps, and making a difference in their community with compassion and kindness. In 2015 we were marking our first NSW award. Here's a look at the 97 students from 77 NSW primary schools who received a Fred Hollows Humanity Award that year, pictured with then Premier Mike Baird (see centre, alongside Gabi Hollows). 08.01.2022 "We were in a New York taxi a couple of years ago with an Eritrean driver. When he found out we came from Australia, he began to talk with awe and love about Fred. I commented that Fred had died and he replied in a shaky voice, 'Fred Hollows will never die'. "It brought tears to our eyes!" writes Toni about her #MyFredMoments. 07.01.2022 "Working with Fred at Wurli Wurlinjang in Katherine and Wuchopperen in Cairns, he just got on with it... and he helped us with our common problems like diabetic retinopathy and cataracts as well as glaucoma," remembers Neil. 05.01.2022 "What an incredible opportunity it was to share the work of The Fred Hollows Foundation with Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness," says Jennifer Merryweather from our Indigenous Australia Program team. WATCH for yourself as Her Majesty The Queen and Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex join a call with VISION 2020/IAPB CEO Peter Holland, Natrajan Vengadesan from Aravind Eye Care in India, and Dr Jalikatu Mustapha of Sightsavers in Sierra Leone. It was to mark #WorldSightDay on October 8 and to recognise Jennifer for her leadership and influence in working to #ClosetheGap in eye health and bringing positive change across the Australian vision care sector. Congrats, Jen!

05.01.2022 Today is World Sight Day, and Scott Morrison (ScoMo) has applauded the work of @Vision2020 and its member organisations including The Fred Hollows Foundation in this short video. "The late Fred Hollows once said the basic attribute of humanity is to look after each other when they are in need. That's what you've done, for the past 20 years." We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! There’s been a great deal of progress since Fred’s day. But there’s still so much more to do..., especially when Indigenous Australians are 3 times more likely to be blind or vision impaired compared to other Australians. That’s why we’re urging all Australians to get their eyes tested this World Sight Day it’s something else you can to do to carry on Fred’s vision. #20yearsofvision

05.01.2022 "Fred Hollows was a great surgeon," writes Hilda. "I was lucky enough to work with him twice. He was irascible (and) had a devilish sense of humour but, my god, he made music when he operated!" 03.01.2022 #Covid19 may have stopped us from having our 2020 #HumanityAward presentations in-person. But it hasn’t stopped these wonderful Year 6 students following in Fred’s footsteps with great displays of compassion and community. 03.01.2022 "Truat can't see the blackboard, she stumbles a lot when she walks, she can't play with her friends, and they tease her because she's blind," reports her mum, Thuyen. It broke Thuyen's heart but she simply didn’t have the money for Truat's surgery, without which Truat would be permanently blind. See how people like YOU helped change that, at: http://bit.ly/MeetTruat

02.01.2022 Looking after your diet is vital for your eye health, especially if you have #diabetes. And, sure, the guidelines tell you to eat food from the five main #food groups. But WHICH foods should you be eating? Well, here are some ideas we've got: https://fal.cn/3bQzK
