25.01.2022 Things to do that aren’t online: Developing children’s language and listening skills South Australia’s Special Education Resource Unit (SERU) has a document you... can use to guide you in ways to develop students vocabularies. ‘SIMPLE ACTIVITIES FOR LANGUAGE INTERACTION’ can be downloaded from http://web.seru.sa.edu.au//Simple-Activities-Language-Deve Another great resource is ‘Developing Oral Language with BARRIER GAMES’ written by Alison Jarred & Nadja Roelofs and illustrated by Nadja Roelofs has 128 pages of ideas for different barrier games and is downloadable for free from https://www.scoilnet.ie/uploads/resources/24381/24104.pdf Barrier Games are fantastic ways of developIng language skills in children. In a barrier game, two players sit across from each other with a barrier, such as a large book, a tray, or a folded piece of cardboard between them. Each player has the same tools on their side of the table, they might be a blank piece of paper and the same colour crayons or pencil, duplicate scenes and objects, or a scene with slight differences they need to describe. Place the barrier so that each player is unable to see the other player’s scene and objects. Player A chooses where to set each object on his/her scene. They then give verbal directions to help player B set up his/her scene exactly the same way they did. At the end remove the barrier to see how close the player B got to the original setting. Twinkl also has a number of colourful barrier games some of you might enjoy with your children https://www.twinkl.com.au/resour/t-e-191-barrier-games-pack

23.01.2022 Making good use of our time...freshening up the outside of our centre.

22.01.2022 I found this online, but love the simplicity and sophistication of the designs. The learning opportunity is to google African masks and share that with the children and the have them make their own mask. These beautiful masks are very times appropriate.

21.01.2022 Phonics Play Comics has a range of phonic readers that are grouped following the Letters and Sounds phonic sequence. They are great for capturing the interest o...f some of our engaged and older readers that still need phonic books. To make work at home more interesting, there are also templates to make your own comics, the uses for these are only limited to your imagination. We would love to see any comics you make. https://www.phonicsplaycomics.co.uk/comics.html

21.01.2022 Automaticity - is the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. It is usually the result of learning, repetition, and practice. Automaticity is important in Literacy and Maths. This is what it looks like. It needs to be a 3 second response to a question/word.... Not all things need to be automatic.

18.01.2022 It's not all about homework (only 2 hours our of our day).

13.01.2022 Good luck everyone with isolation schooling tomorrow! Just remember, even if you are not learning a new language, taking a short course, teaching your child to cook, to clean, to paint, to read, to write, to sing, to dance...and all the other ridiculous things we're expected to do concurrently, you're still an AMAZING parent.

10.01.2022 Just in case people are bored, you know cleaning, cooking, working from home, homeschooling & learning another language whilst in #iso, here is another fun thing you can do!

10.01.2022 It may not look like it, but planning the whole term for a group of 4 kids takes about 6 hours. It is for this reason that I will only be able to offer my services to half of the students in my centre. For all those being forced to homeschool, my main advice would be to take things slowly and focus on the basics this term. Whilst kids can catch up, for some it's harder. Doing something is better than doing nothing.

10.01.2022 It doesn't matter what homeschooling looks like. Does it?

09.01.2022 Here is the Victorian news. For the time being, our lessons will continue to run online. A term 3 timetable will be released shortly with some changes.

03.01.2022 I'm pretty sure this is the best thing about homeschooling.

02.01.2022 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT WE'RE MOVING ONLINE (until COVID 19 is over!) Hi everyone!... I fought to keep the centre going for as long as humanly possible, but now in the safety of everyone, we're entering the virtual world for our lessons. Things will run pretty much as normal in our small online groups. We're starting off in groups of 4 this term and some private lessons. The trial runs over the holidays have been successful. I started to send out messages to some parents yesterday about their child's spot for term 2 and will be making contact with everyone by Friday to explain how things will work. Stay sane. Thank you to one of our parents who sent me this! This definitely IS ME!
