23.01.2022 Recent changes in the field of dental sleep medicine have been remarkable. There have been three innovations which have resulted in oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnoea of unequalled comfort, as well as strength. 1 - Intra oral scanning Instead of taking impressions in the traditional way, a camera used in the mouth, captures a 3D image. The image is extraordinarily accurate and once in the system does not need to be retaken for any reason. No more messy impressions!... 2 - 3D Printing Appliances are now designed by trained technicians, on a computer screen, using specially developed software. The appliance is then printed by sophisticated medical grade 3D printers resulting in uniformly thin appliances with an exceptional fit. The level of comfort for patients is unparalleled. 3 - Nylon The advent of the medical grade nylon material has resulted in appliances which can be thin to a level of less than 1mm, yet virtually unbreakable. At SleepWise Clinic we are using this technology and recommend that if you are considering an appliance for treating your snoring or sleep apnoea, then nylon should be your first choice. In this video, Dr Ben Abbott of SleepWise Clinic, discusses and demonstrates a state of the art nylon based oral appliances designed and manufactured in Melbourne Australia.

23.01.2022 Dr Ben Abbott Dr Abbott graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2008 with a Bachelor of Dental Science degree. Originally from Tasmania, he moved to Melbourne in 2011. He is an experienced general dentist, having worked in several inner city practices. After seeing the benefits of oral devices for patients with snoring and sleep apnoea issues first-hand, he undertook further training in the field. He continues to pursue further ongoing education relati...ng to sleep, and is a member of the Australian Sleep Association. Working in close conjunction with sleep physicians, ENT surgeons and sleep psychologists, he believes the quality of your sleep has a dramatic impact on your health, well-being and overall quality of life. 07.01.2022 Our Dr Ken Lee at SleepWise has shared this statement from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine regarding Oral Appliance Therapy "Oral Appliance Therapy should be prescribed as a first-line therapy for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea during the COVID-19 pandemic."... This recommendation is based on the following information: CPAP therapy potentially exposes individuals, especially those in proximity to the patient, to increased risk of transmission of COVID-19. COVID-19 can remain suspended in the air in aerosol particles. There is the potential though still unknown for patients to be re-infected from re-using CPAP tubing, filters and masks. There have been reported shortages of distilled water and other supplies necessary for optimal use of CPAP machines. Oral appliances do not generate aerosols and can be easily disinfected by patients to kill the COVID-19 virus. To read the full statement click the link below http://ed.gr/ct8t4

05.01.2022 Did you know that getting a good nights sleep can boost your bodys ability to fight, prevent and overcome infection? Adequate sleep is critical in ensuring your immune system is able to fight infection. Not only do you need to get enough hours of sleep, but the quality of that sleep is just as important. A recent study showed those who slept less than six hours a night were four times more likely to develop a cold than participants who slept for seven hours or more. If yo...ure waking in the morning still feeling unrefreshed, feel sleepy during the day and are snoring, you may have undiagnosed sleep apnoea. If you are experiencing these symptoms it is strongly recommended that you do a sleep study, which is the only way to determine if you have sleep apnoea, and most importantly the severity. The bottom line is that good, quality sleep is a natural immune booster and that focusing on your sleep habits is really one of the best ways to strengthen your immune system and fight off infection. 04.01.2022 We understand that it can be confusing when hearing new terminology; so, at SleepWise, we are here to help break down the different terms used to describe Oral Appliances! What is an Oral Appliance? An Oral Appliance is a device worn in the mouth during sleep to treat snoring or sleep apnoea. They work by bringing the lower jaw forward to help keep the airway open. What often confuses patients are the different names that these appliances are called. Oral appliances can als...o be called: - Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS) - Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD) - Snoring and sleep apnoea splints - Snoring and sleep apnoea dental device - Snoring and sleep apnoea mouthguards/ mouth pieces What is Oral Appliance Therapy? Oral Appliance Therapy or OAT, is the treatment of snoring or sleep apnoea with an oral appliance. It is generally safe, painless, effective and does not involve surgery. Oral Appliances are for most people easy to wear and it is normally possible for you to still speak, yawn or drink when wearing the appliance. What is the process of Oral Appliance Therapy? Step 1: Consultation and examination Step 2: Scanning and registration Step 3: Fitting Step 4: Reviews We will break down the details of each individual step in the next few posts!

01.01.2022 The past 12 months has seen the greatest leap forward in oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnoea that weve seen in the 20 years since we established Sleepwise Clinic. Intra oral scanning, instead of taking impressions, coupled with 3D printing using medical grade nylon, have resulted in appliances of unparalleled comfort, thinness and strength. As you can see in the video, the acrylic appliance fractured into several pieces while the 3D printed nylon was completely in...tact and fitted normally back in the mouth. This was repeated several times and the results were similar. We have now made over 500 appliances from 3D printed nylon and the results have been like nothing weve seen before in terms of comfort; and we havent had a single fracture - only dogs running away with the odd appliance and putting some dents in them!

01.01.2022 Proudly Australian owned and operated! SleepWise Clinic offers patients oral appliances that are made locally in Melbourne! From our clinic, to the laboratory and 3D printers, everyone involved with the production of our appliances are based in Melbourne.
