23.01.2022 HEALTH Resistance Starch Most of the daily complex carbohydrates in our diets are starches. These include grains, potatoes, pasta, breads, rice, etc. They are slow to digest, not spiking our blood sugar levels.... Once these starches are processed and refined they become problematic and unhealthy, raising our blood sugar levels which in turn leads to weight gain and all metabolic disease. But not all starches you eat are digested. Some resist digestion and pass through the stomach to the lower intestines and colon. These are called resistance starch. Once the resistant starch makes it’s way to the lower intestines and colon it starts to feed our friendly, good bacteria. This is essential for good health. As our good bacteria increases so does the health of our digestive tract and colon. This is a huge help in preventing colon cancer. Any excess resistance starch left over from the bacteria will turn into Butyrate. Butyrate travels through the body via our blood stream. Butyrate helps control body inflammation as well as supporting our organs and our immune system. Another benefit of Resistant starch is that it lowers cholesterol. It also lowers blood glucose and insulin levels, especially after a meal. Resistance starch curbs the hunger hormone Leptin, reducing our hunger levels throughout the day. You can find resistant starch in grains, seeds, legumes, oats, raw potato, and green bananas. Interestingly, potato, pasta and rice when cooled and left 24 hrs after cooking turn into resistance starch via a process called retrogradation. The structure and healthiness of many foods will change depending on how it is prepared and when it is eaten. Try to incorporate Resistant Starch foods into your daily diet. 23.01.2022 HEALTH Exercise. . . Enough is Enough! If exercise was a drug, it would be the best drug we have for preventing... heart disease, dementia, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity, but like any drug you have to get the dose right. It only takes 15mins of walking everyday to start reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The more you exercise the more you reduce the risk. However with long term extreme exercise you will start to loose some of these benefits. The heart is roughly the size of your fist and pumps about 5 litres of blood around your body per minute. This adds up to 3 -4 billion beats per lifetime. During intense activity the heart can pump up to 30-35 litres of blood per minute.This can stretch and be problematic to the heart. After about 45mins of high intensity training , the bodies antioxidants can not keep up with the excess oxidative stress that is created by the exercise.This can be decremental to our heart health. Especially after the age of 45, where long intense exercise causes tears and micro damage to the heart. It can also lead to fibrosis, scar tissue and the development of arterial fibrillation. This heart damage is due to the accumulation of excess exercise over a long period of time, e.g bike and marathon runners. As we age its important to start training for health and longevity. Incorporating zone 2 training where we exercise for a longer period of time at lower heart rate levels is a great tool for longevity. 07.01.2022 WHOLE BODY VIBRATION (WBV). . . what is it, and is it good for me? WBV is a platformed base machine like the Power Plate that sends vibrations throughout the body. These vibrations are measured in hertz. The optimal level is 30 hertz. 30 hertz = 30 muscle contractions per minute.... There have been many studies on what affect vibrations have on the body. One that is capturing a lot of interest is the release of growth hormone and more importantly growth hormone receptors under vibration. Studies also show that under vibration cortisol levels decrease, reducing body stress. Many athletes perform better than their competitors not due to fitness or skill levels but how well their body recovers between events. Cells under vibration become more permeable to glucose. There is also an increase in blood circulation and vasodilation. This will allow the body to perform at optimal levels. The muscles are able to convert more glucose and oxygen into energy. For the average person, it also helps control insulin and blood sugar levels. These tiny vibrations also pump our lymphatic system. This will improve our lymphatic circulation and help in the removal of stored toxins. When exercising under vibration more of our muscle fibers are firing, this stimulates muscle growth and leads to the burning of more calories. WBV will benefit all, from the elite athlete to people just trying to lose weight or suffering from an injury. Vibration training is perfect for a warm up and in preparing the muscles for a workout. It is also most beneficial in cooling the muscles down post event or workout. Aim to start the cooldown straight after exercise so the body can get back to resting levels and start the healing and growing process. If you are waiting for 2 - 3hrs after training to do a recovery session it’s probably too late to prevent the delayed onset of muscle soreness, (DOMS).
