21.01.2022 11,000 signatures collected to end greyhound racing in Western Australia so far (& we’re still busy counting!) As the WA government will only accept hard copy, original signatures this has been an extraordinary effort to achieve this figure. Thank you to every individual that signed, every business that displayed the petitions & of course our volunteers! ... We are in the process of counting the signatures for a final total, if you haven’t already please sign & send to us the petitions via mail or DM us for collection by Friday. Even if you only have one signature it still counts! Petitions can be downloaded from our website https://www.freethehounds.com.au/ban-greyhound-racing/ #EndGreyhoundRacing

21.01.2022 Here is the first of many stories we’ll be sharing as part of our campaign to ban greyhound racing in WA. Andre Deuner’s story: I had never seen a Greyhound until I arrived to Australia. As any other dog loving person I went to pet him straight away. He was a beautiful black Grey, very skinny - at least that’s what I thought at the time but turns out he was in very good shape. He got so afraid of me as I approached him and hid behind his female owner. All dogs here seem to ...be so friendly, so I was quite confused as to why that’d happened. She explained to me he didn’t like male figures because of the abuse he suffered when he was racing. Coming from a so-called third world country - where dog racing is long gone - I couldn't understand how this was happening here in Australia. So I started doing my research, signed petitions to ban the industry but was feeling like I could do more. That’s when my partner and I volunteered to be a foster carer for GAWA. It’s a life changing experience. The way these dogs come to us is heart breaking. Some afraid of everything and everyone; some reactive to all small and big animals; most with physical issues; the list goes on and on... But with love and care it’s amazing how all of them eventually come out of their shells and learn how "to dog" as we like saying. We’ve had something around 15 foster dogs so far (maybe more, I lost count) and they all have different challenges to deal with until we feel comfortable enough to find a forever family for them. Some of them will have to take anxiety pills until they pass away, some will never be able to go to a dog park and play like all other dogs but they’ll be happy in their own way. I’m really hopeful this industry can be ended or at least much better managed. The way things are at the moment simply cannot continue. Thank you for sharing Andre. We are asking our followers to write to us and outline the following: Your opinion of greyhound racing Greyhound cruelty you have witnessed Your greyhound’s story Your story how did you become anti racing? Foster carers in particular are encouraged to share their experiences rehabilitating greyhounds. We plan to use these stories for a social media campaign, reaching out to members of Parliament, and using in Government submissions. Every experience and/or opinion counts. Please email your story to [email protected]. Feel free to include a photo of you & your hound. If you wish to remain anonymous or not have your story shared publicly, please note this in your correspondence. Greyhounds need your help. Together we can make a difference Stories will be accepted until 31 January 2021 #endgreyhoundracing

18.01.2022 October 1 is National Black Dog Day. The purpose of this day is to encourage adoption of black dogs. We don’t understand why black dogs are so often overlooked and spend the longest time in foster care. They have beautiful shiny glossy coats that every colour looks fabulous against. Plus they have that gorgeous little wolf face when those grey hairs come up. We LOVE our black houndies. Let’s see your black beauties #nationalblackdogday

17.01.2022 Now we understand kennelling of dogs may be necessary during the re-homing process, but as a long-term housing arrangement, it is not suitable for a dog. Good welfare means a dog is free from physical discomfort and mental distress and a barren kennel environment generally cannot provide this. Dogs should be free to express normal and healthy behaviour which includes adequate movement, play and interaction with people and other animals. Impacts of the kennel life are commonly... seen in greyhound rescue, this includes: anxiety/behavioural issues, kennel coat, sores, and physical signs of stress/frustration/boredom such as worn down teeth from chewing kennel bars. Dogs require adequate shelter from the outside elements particularly during storms and extreme temperatures, and a shed that is commonly used for housing greyhounds just isn’t good enough. We think greyhounds deserve so much more than what the racing life can provide them. If you agree please download, sign and return our petition to ban greyhound racing: https://www.freethehounds.com.au/ban-greyhound-racing #endgreyhoundracing #couchesnotcages #companionsnotcommodities

13.01.2022 We want to tell you the story of a boy who passed away earlier this year. His name was Commander JayJay. He was born in WA in November 2014 along with his 7 brothers and sisters. His first race was at Cannington 20/7/16. 6 months into his racing career he fractured his right hock and was stood down 90 days, however he didn’t race again for 11 months. He came back to race late Dec 2017. 2 months later he was suspended for 28 days for failing to pursue the lure with commitment.... On his first race back he sprained his right hock. 2 months later he fractured his left hock and was stood down 42 days, however didn’t race again for 9 months. He came back to race in February 2019 and by December he sustained a muscle injury and was stood down 21 days. This was the end of his career, he was 5 years old. Soon after his owner informed the racing authority that Commander JayJay died from illness. Dogs are our companions and we are meant to protect them from harm. Commander JayJay needlessly suffered for what? Someone’s hobby? Gambling profits? After all that suffering he didn’t even get to experience pet life. If you agree no dog should be treated this way please download, sign, and return our petition to ban greyhound racing: https://www.freethehounds.com.au/ban-greyhound-racing Help us end this exploitation and mistreatment of man’s best friend. (Injury details are from industry stewards reports and death details from retirement form obtained under FOI laws) #endgreyhoundracing

10.01.2022 Story sent in by Tristan. It was 2016 when Andy joined the family. Not alot of fat on him at all and his head down and tail between his legs. My ex partner and I saw GAWA at a local markets. My ex fell in love with the dogs so we put our names down to foster with the chance of adoption. I had previous experience with Greyhounds but nothing like one being a home dog. I only had experience with trainers as some people i knew many many years ago trained them. I was up before t...he sun to take the dogs down to Cannington for time trials and most Saturday nights at race meetings at Cannington. I had no idea of the exploitation the industry was doing to these poor pups. It wasn’t until i visited the trainer one day and she was very very upset and crying. I asked what was wrong. She said the Greyhounds were out having a toilet break (dogs lived in a tin shed) and somehow the cat got out. Needless to say, sadly, there wasnt much left of the cat. That was when i stopped supporting the racing industry. So, my former partner and I got a call from GAWA saying they had a Greyhound for us to meet. We jumped in the car and went to Baldivis Markets. The day was gloomy, overcast and wet! We were introduced to Barry (now Andy) and took him straight home. He settled straight in with the family and now cannot be seperated from his Staffy fur sister. As luck would have, by some miracle chance we have since discovered that my ex partners cousin was actually Andys trainer! (Thats how Andy got his name. He wouldnt answer or respond to Barry so we changed it back to Andy). I cannot imagine life without my big handsome boy!! I will not rest until this hideous industry is stopped and the Greyhounds can run free for fun... not their lives. Thank you for sharing Tristan We are asking our WA followers to write to us and outline the following: Your opinion of greyhound racing Greyhound cruelty you have witnessed Your greyhound’s story Your story how did you become anti racing? 03.01.2022 We’d like to say a HUGE thank you to all the businesses so far that have kindly agreed to display our petition to ban greyhound racing. We couldn’t do it without you and we appreciate your help so much In WA, our government only accepts paper copy petitions with original signatures - online petitions are not an option. This means we have to work harder to get our petitions out into the community to collect signatures. We couldn’t reach our target by January without the hel...p of these businesses. With their assistance, we will be sending a strong clear message to our state government that greyhound exploitation has no place in a modern compassionate society. We ask our followers if you can please please head over to these businesses’ social media pages and give them a like. Also, make a commitment to visit & support them- grab some pet treats, or a coffee, or lunch, and thank them.
