25.01.2022 Welcome our new (future) bird keeper

24.01.2022 You may recall I mentioned about an older pair of weiros that were surrendered to us. They thought they were 2 girls for the last 10+years due to them never having fertile eggs. It's because the male has leg/foot issues. Anyway... We stuck some fertile eggs under them, and the first one hatched this morning! I'll keep an eye on them to ensure they feed it, if they don't I'll give it a special brew for its first feed, and subsequent feeds if needed. If they still aren't feeding by tomorrow (The chick will start actively calling for food after its first couple of feeds), then I'll try swaping it for an older chick, and worst case if they just dont feed... Atleast we gave them a chance. I'll put them into the communal aviary and give them another chance down the track.

24.01.2022 So rescue chick ended up having a foot over its head which is why it wouldn't have been able to move. It was very happy to be free of the egg, a little lop sided but once it's moved around a bit the joint/muscles etc will free up and all should be normal. The progress was just more wetting, releasing the membrane and pulling it back, removing a bit more egg, letting it warm back up and repeating over again until the chick decided it was time to push out. It's now under mum and dad so fingers crossed it makes it through the night and is fed tomorrow.

22.01.2022 The little budgie is doing well! You can see its back here amongst the huddle.

21.01.2022 EOI: Baby Galah. If you think you'd be interested in a young male galah please inbox us with your interest and explain why you'd be the best home for him!

21.01.2022 Breeding wieros for sale in Albany, can deliver to Perth this weekend.

20.01.2022 This guy acting older than he is, demanding to be out and either laying on my shoulder or chest getting scratches or preening my beard *Yes I'm extremely tired

19.01.2022 Nest box cleaning... Too many people don't do it. There are several reasons, main ones being; > They dont in nature > I'll scare the parents off the nest and they wont want to go back in > The parents will smell me on the chicks and abandon them... > It's too hard Now... Lets bust some myths and correct some assumptions. > In nature their nest hollows are very different, often slanted so the parents can push the crap out. Some parents will eat the poop to clean up, the issue with this is bacteria ingestion which is then being fed to the chicks. It can have a cascading effect. I have a pair that does this and if I don't clean the box often enough they and their chicks get diarrhoea. Easily sorted with cleaning and a remedy. But avoidable. Why risk it when it's so quick and easy to clean!? > You can get the parents out of the nest without worry, as soon as they are able they'll go back in to make sure everything is ok. I have my boxes on hooks so they can be quickly removed and I can take the box elsewhere to do the clean which is much easier and safer. > Handling eggs and chicks at any age, although you do need to be extra savvy with being clean & sanitised, will not cause the parents to abandon. However I do suggest never leaving them access to their box "empty". Always block up the entry or remove the nest then put back with chicks/eggs as it was, just cleaner. Birds can't smell you or if they do it doesn't deter them from taking care of their young or eggs. > Make it easier! Place your box in an accessible spot, make it easy to remove/replace, use things that make cleaning easy. Box held up by picture hooks (the strong secure ones), rolled oats cheap and easy to toss out, and pour in, a metal or plastic scraper, F10 cleaning wipes. Use a bowl with rolled oats, 15-20secs in the microwave gives them warmth some paper towel onto if too hot, to hold the chicks/eggs while you take 2-3mins to clean the box. The process takes about 5mins, 10mins tops. Put some food in for the parents to keep them occupied while you do it. This is a weeks worth of buildup. I normally clean twice a week for this age/number of chicks. (We were away for a few days) 1 clean is just a top layer removal, the 2nd is a full replacement.

18.01.2022 Sharing some good information!

18.01.2022 Hand raised budgies. $80ea inc Some food, toys and supplements to get you going. Can supply cages from $60. Ready to go!

17.01.2022 We'll actually be doing this for our Patio/flight area on our Kitchen/Dining and a Bedroom window that look out into the area. Window tape when done correctly can be almost invisible from inside but enough from the outside to stop a bird flying into it. As they see the vertical lines they "cant fly through them". If they were horizontal though they would still fly into the window.

17.01.2022 Good laugh... Almost seems true hey

16.01.2022 Baby with the foster Weiros is doing well. Although it's apparent that Mum is the only one feeding. Dad is a good sitter but he wasn't feeding, so I kicked him out to let mum go in and feed chick.

15.01.2022 I was going to wait till it was complete... But I'm too excited and wanted to share the progress! We're soooo close now to being fully enclosed (excuse the poor quality photos, my phone is on it's last legs). Both ends are sliding doors

14.01.2022 Absolute this!

12.01.2022 My superstar brother just successfully helped a budgie hatch with me guiding him over the phone. We were about to set off to Perth when I conducted the last chick/egg check and found a budgie trying to hatch from the wrong end of the egg (mal-positioned). So before I left I gave it a breathing hole and popped it into the incubator. This also dried out the membrane to stop the chick moving which would have likely led to its demise as it would have caused bleeding. After 36hours the chick was very vocal and we knew it was ready to come out. So with some phone calls, pics, video chats 2hours and patience saw us through it with a happily hatched chick now in with it's siblings and Mum. Hopefully it survives the night fingers crossed

12.01.2022 Anyone that followed Operation save chick from egg and/or my foster pair (the ~12yr olds that have never hatched or raised chicks despite sitting on eggs most of their lives). They were going so well with the first 3 we put under them we've put another 4 under them too, this includes the chick I helped hatch. Looking at them you wouldn't know which 1 it was, but I can tell from the umbilical scab. It's not lopsided anymore and all limbs look perfect and move normally. I'm so happy for this pair, I'm saddened that I'll be away on holidays when the first of these lot will leave the nest (I'll get my family to keep me updated and send me pics etc).

11.01.2022 Think before buying, we always screen our clients to make sure they are making the right choice and we ALWAYS offer our guarantee that if the bird isn't right we take it back, because although we want happy clients our birds happiness comes first! If anyone ever sees a bird being neglected, direct the owner to us for surrender, no judgement. We take them, rehabilitate them, and give them everything they need to thrive!

11.01.2022 Normal people see weeds, bird people see bird food

10.01.2022 Progress so far on the new back fence... Even like this the area looks so good, it was a mound of weedy dirt before. Cant wait till Wednesday when the fence goes in!

10.01.2022 Got some stuff going on down the back of our place! Any guesses?

10.01.2022 A couple of these cuties might be available, pending a couple of replies as we're at the end of our waiting list for weiros (the budgie wait list is still past xmas at this stage). Please contact us if you might be interested in a new feathered companion :-)

10.01.2022 Foster weiro, still going well although Mumma isn't feeding as much as my other breeding pairs feed their chicks. So I brought it in and gave it a top up. This foster pair deserves to raise a chick after 10+years of sitting on infertile eggs! P.S. A sibling is hatching too :-D

09.01.2022 We still need to educate people on proper bird husbandry, but we're making a difference! Things like this comic are actually a great way of getting a point across :-)

09.01.2022 Who wants to hand raise birds? *Sound on!

08.01.2022 One of our hand raised budgies enjoying a scratch... How cute!

08.01.2022 Sometimes the novelty wears off, circumstances change or some people just aren't aware. We are here to help change this from happening. We take on birds that can't be cared for anymore, aren't loved as they once were. If you see a bird being neglected point the owners to us!

08.01.2022 Rehoming/Adoption opportunities: Enquiries via inbox. You must be able to prove that you can provide the right home for the bird/s. This means an appropriate sized indoor/outdoor cage (flight area where applicable), be able to provide enough one on one attention or if introducing to a potential mate know how to go about it properly and with correct intentions, be able to provide the correct diet (as some species need a specific diet to thrive) and most importantly be able to ...afford vet care if the time came < This is a big one, too often we see posts online asking about their sick bird that "hasn't been itself for a while" and complaining about vet costs. By the time birds are visibly sick it is fairly progressed and needs quick attention and care. Female Eclectus Parrot, Tame but needs experienced owner. Suitable for pairing. Adoption fees to be discussed. Middle aged pair Weiros (Cockatiels) not able to breed themselves but have fostered 2 clutches successfully although signs of plucking. Would suit large avairy (non-breeding) can live mixed with other species of similar personality. No charge. One legged budgie female, not tame. Was in an aviary environment but was being picked on by some of the other budgies. Could be paired with another male or female budgie for company and kept in an appropriate cage indoors or outdoors. No charge. *Discuss options

07.01.2022 Meet our new arrivals, Cai and Kiki the white-bellied Caiques (K-eye-eeks, or alot of people say Cakes haha ). They're going to take a bit to train but they will hopefully be our future breeders so not too fussed if they aren't super playful.

07.01.2022 Operation save chick from egg. I often see people loosing chicks just before or during hatch. There are a lot of reasons for it, but the most common is due to the chick development in what we call malposition. This is where the chick is unable to correctly manoeuvre itself inside the egg to successfully unzip itself and hatch. This is the importance of candling eggs and understanding what you are looking at and looking for. On smaller eggs like Budgies and Cockatiels it is di...fficult to see anything once they get to hatching stage as they fill the whole egg apart from the airsac. But you can still pickup on things. This little one started to hatch (pipped 2 days ago) but in the wrong spot and caught a vein which caused a small bleed, not always an issue and some will still hatch fine. But in this ones case, it caused the membrane to stick to it and it hasn't been able to move, so the cracks in the egg just went in a large circle (in the same spot) instead of around the egg. It's still got another day till it would seriously need help but due to the bleed I wanted to make sure nothing else was going on. I've take the top of the egg off where the airsac is, you can see the dry membrane... But we still need to be very careful, see the next pic I've wet the membrane with a sterile solution and now we can see the veins. Once these recede we can start work. I can't yet see the reason for the malposition, but it's not extremely bad like some, it's head and beak are in the right place just a little low. I'll update in a new post in a few hours, these things take time! *You can see the darker patch near its beak, this is the dried blood.

06.01.2022 Lacewing female budgie, ready to breed. Half show size. $30

04.01.2022 Spot decided he wanted to play peekaboo under the paper

03.01.2022 Our clients than have purchased birds will remember us telling them how much food to give, this has been written by another enthusiast like us... A good reminder :-)

03.01.2022 As annoy as magpies can be, they are good for chasing away the hawks and eagles! Just had an eagle hovering around and 4 maggies chased it off :-D
