25.01.2022 One secondary college near Mandurah is giving students the opportunity to become aquaculturists and help fill an important estuary system to the bream with ...an important fish species! John Tonkin College students are spending their time in the classroom, and also out of it, working to ensure black bream stocks in the Peel-Harvey Estuary remain abundant for many years to come. Led by the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council alongside Murdoch University and JTC, the Black Bream Project which is supported by Recfishwest is working to increase stewardship of our estuaries and teach kids that healthy rivers lead to healthy bream stocks. While the program is doing a wonderful job nurturing black bream, it might also be nurturing WA’s next crop fisheries scientist, researchers and fishers. 20.01.2022 Koi and goldfish may make lovely additions to your garden pond, but did you know they cause havoc when illegally introduced to our wetland and lake systems acro...ss the city? These pest fish species prey on tadpoles and turtle hatchlings, can introduce parasites and diseases, and contribute to harmful nutrient loading in our waterways Recently our Natural Areas team were tasked with removing the invasive Koi and goldfish from the wetland at Juett Park. Our crew successfully caught and re-homed over a dozen feral fish helping to ensure the safety of this season’s taddies and tiny turtle hatchlings! We actively encourage residents to correctly re-home unwanted pet fish and report sightings of illegal dumping across the City to FishWatch on 1800 815 507.

19.01.2022 Great teamwork between Western Australia Police Force and our crew on Assure this afternoon to rescue two kite surfers. Water Police tasked their vessel TW154 a...nd Assure to search for the kiters after receiving a call. They were located approximately 1km west of Coogee beach. The wind had dropped and they were unable to self recover back to land. TW154 recovered one kiter and Assure the other. Both were transferred to Assure and taken back to land in good health.

19.01.2022 Whether it’s coastal patrol work or fishing adventures, our vessels are a cut above the rest. Book a sea trial today: http://ow.ly/OVm930qWqP4 #ShockwavePowercats

19.01.2022 Training time! Always fun hanging out with these guys. Helicopters play a critical role in marine search and rescue, and we're always in awe of their skill. We're fortunate in the metropolitan area to be able to call on air assets from a range of organisations.

16.01.2022 Staff at the Department of Transport office in Fremantle taking part in the "wear your lifejacket to work" day. Thanks to everyone for getting involved as part ...of the National Safe Boating Week! This was just prior to some fun activities held at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour where a few people were dunked in the water with a lifejacket on, all for a good cause. We will have some great footage to share of this some time soon. Make sure you send your photos through to us. See more

16.01.2022 Have you seen whales or other marine fauna while out fishing? You can help provide valuable information to fisheries scientists by reporting what you see as a c...itizen scientist. By downloading the free Marine Fauna Sightings app from the App Store or Google Play, you can provide information on a range of marine fauna to help track them along the WA coastline. Gaining a better understanding of where whales are, and when, for example, means we can reduce the risk of entanglements in commercial and recreational fishing gear. It also helps inform more effective management solutions. The app was developed by our scientists in collaboration with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Users can note the species, numbers and their movements, and add photos, which is matched to location data from your phone. While individual sightings add to the data, the biggest help is to undertake a ‘survey’ either on your way out or back from a fishing trip. This allows scientists to determine where you saw marine fauna, but equally important, where animals weren’t sighted. Starting as a locally focussed collaboration, the app has since expanded its scope to include more marine animals, such as dolphins, turtles and dugongs and is now nation-wide. It also includes handy information to help identify species and learn more about them.

12.01.2022 Sale records for meals and computers were amongst the items seized by DPIRD compliance officers who did a targeted inspection of the Currambine Bar and Bistro i...n September 2017. The seizures were part of an extensive investigation that also involved forensic auditing of the records of the business, which revealed significant discrepancies in the restaurant’s legitimate purchases of seafood when compared to their outgoing sales of seafood dishes including western rock lobster. In Perth Magistrates Court recently, the company responsible for the business and four people associated with it were ordered to pay fines, mandatory penalties and costs totalling $150,259, after pleading guilty to black market seafood trades. 11.01.2022 If you have ornamental fish you no longer want to keep, please do not release them into our waterways. Ornamental fish that came from an aquarium or are deliber...ately moved from one waterbody to another can have a devastating impact on our native species and aquatic environment. If they get established they can be difficult if not impossible to eradicate and their impact may be irreversible. If you no longer want your fish, give them to an aquarium, contact an organisation such as the Koi Society of WA or find someone willing to take them. If you see ornamental fish in our waterways, you can help us protect WA’s aquatic environment by emailing [email protected], or calling FishWatch 1800 815 507. Let us know about any unusual fish or pest species you see, or catch, and if you do catch a pest or ornamental species, please do not return it to the water.

11.01.2022 Not just for fish ! The crayfish like almost all marine species has an iki jime spot . When spiked correctly, besides being humane and respectful to your catch,... stress is greatly reduced. When allowed to die slowly or boiled live flesh degrading toxins are released. This compromises the texture and flavour of the flesh. Brain spiking with the Ikipik takes care of this leaving you with fresher, tastier cray meat which is what it's all about!

09.01.2022 Club member Luca done well with good conditions on Tuesday to pick up a couple of good dhuie's and snapper ..

05.01.2022 CHECK THIS OUT! Just a few hours ago we were stoked to be joined by some of the great and the good of the recfishing community and DPIRD’s Marine Finfish Hatch...ery team to release 10,000 yellowtail kingfish off South Mole at Fremantle. That’s a massive step forward for establishing an ongoing metro kingie stocking program and 10,000 more reasons to get excited about hooking into amazing sportfishing off Perth! Kingies are fast-growing these fish could be legal size within a year and they are hardy making them perfect for fish stocking. The State Government has backed in funding for kingie stocking for the next three years and adds to our ongoing barramundi, pink snapper, trout and marron stocking programs. Well-managed stocking programs create fish abundance and fantastic fishing experiences. Stocking really is king! For more information, click here https://bit.ly/39gqqc4 Thanks to Dixon Brothers Fishing, Halco Tackle Fabio Varrone, of Fab Fishing & Tours, Compleat Angler Nedlands and Tackle West for supporting and coming down to help us release the kingies! Also, shout out to Saltfix for sharing some awesome fishing footage with us! Fisheries WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD Peter Tinley AM

04.01.2022 Mulloway in the 12kg to 25kg range have been caught in good numbers in 90m to 110m of water behind Rottnest Island. The metro fish aggregating devices (FADs) are continuing to produce dolphinfish and tuna this week. Reef fishers have been doing well on pink snapper and baldchin groper south-west of Rottnest. More baldies have also been coming from the 30m to 50m depths off Hillarys, Ocean Reef and Mindarie. There have been some nice mulloway caught within Cockburn Sound, which still may also be worth trying for Spanish mackerel considering the masses on baitfish in the protected waters. King George whiting have been successfully targeted in 10m to 18m of water off Cottesloe. Squid catches are improving along the seagrass beds off Fremantle.

04.01.2022 Just a reminder to all of our members we have our AGM tomorrow night Friday the 27th of November starting at 6.30pm at our clubrooms in Henderson.A couple of rule changes and committee positions will need to be voted on .So come along to make sure your opinion is heard. After the meeting there will be a sausage sizzle.Hope to see you all there thanks FRFC

03.01.2022 Recreational Fishers should feel incredibly proud to know that their annual licence fees contributed towards this new van that’s kitted out to help children and... adults living with a disability get outdoors and go fishing. Fishability have been doing this great work for 20 years and I was pleased to attend the launch of their latest van with Lisa O'Malley MLA at Point Walter today! Big thank you to chairman Michael Donnelly and all the volunteers for having us today and keep up the great work.
