25.01.2022 We just listened to Tasha speaking about ways to support your child in the face of possible anxiety related to returning to school on Monday. Tasha provided some very sage advice that begins with really listening to the nature of your child’s concerns and addressing the issue rather than glossing over it with the school will be great...there’s nothing to worry about type of response.

25.01.2022 Pam Kaster shared this padlet of Decodable Text Resources - now all we need is a month of Sundays to trawl through it all....!

25.01.2022 And this is why we do what we do.....!

22.01.2022 Now for something completely different....who can spot Jenny Baker as an extra in the Homely Homewares’ shop....? Hint: she is wearing brightly coloured clothing....hahahaha

22.01.2022 In the case of phonemic awareness, trying to perceive the sounds within words can be difficult. If you have any doubt about this, you should listen to a foreign language; try to count the words. Good luck! Having a visual representation can help, however. Eventually you need to perceive the sounds by ear alone, but the support of the eye can help facilitate the accomplishment of that. A quote from the ever pragmatic Timothy Dhanahan who addresses the often asked question re...garding Phonological Awareness.... Would you like letters with that Madam.....? See more

21.01.2022 Subject specific vocabulary lists.... thanks for sharing Kathryn Thorburn....!

18.01.2022 Annique Farrelly Ildi Bruz...... let me know if you think we should purchase this....!

18.01.2022 Pure reading versus image processing...! Letter sound association versus whole word reading...! Left lateralisation versus right lateralisation...!... Graph versus mountain...! Just in case you missed this video in the previous post, we thought it was worth sharing again keeping these key concepts (above) in mind. It is a winner for explaining to parents and other professionals why we MUST adhere to the systematic synthetic phonics approach to reading if we want students to be able to self teach And after all, isn’t that the aim of good quality pedagogy?!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v21wwvEti5Q

18.01.2022 Why we MUST teach our students how to read using systematic synthetic phonics.....!

17.01.2022 Please be aware that we have told our clinicians and support staff to leave the clinic immediately due to the current bushfire watch and act alert. THE CLINIC WILL BE CLOSED. We apologise for any inconvenience and hope everyone stays safe. . . . ... A bushfire WATCH AND ACT is in place for people in an area bounded by Azelia Road, Rockingham Road and Cockburn Road in parts of HAMILTON HILL, SPEARWOOD and NORTH COOGEE in the CITY OF COCKBURN. There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching in the area and conditions are changing. https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au/

13.01.2022 To all our FSPS community, We just want to let you know that in accordance with the recommendations provided by the Western Australian State Government yesterday, we will not be working with students via face-to-face services whilst WA is experiencing hard lockdown this week; the clinic will be closed until close of business Friday 5th February (unless otherwise advised). We are pleased to be able to offer our students sessions via telepractice. These will be available throu...ghout this week - and beyond if required. Your therapist will make contact with you to set up arrangements for telepractice if that is something that would work for your son / daughter. Whilst it is disappointing that the exciting start to Term 1 has now been delayed, we completely understand the necessity to keep everybody safe and prevent further spread of the virus. We will do everything in our power to support state government recommendations! Please email - [email protected] or [email protected] or call us on 94334595 at any time of the day. We have staff ready and waiting to receive calls and answer your queries. We are here to support you and your family during this time. Until we see you again, please stay safe and well and happy..X Cheers from The whole FSPS team..!

12.01.2022 Among literate individuals, written words are always processed in the left side of the brain known as The Visual Word Form Area. It is believed this part of the brain serves to break down words into phonological chunks so that they can later be built back up to derive meaning via frontal regions of the brain. In short, effective reading appears to require auditory discrimination: a significant tick in favour of the phonemic awareness camp when it comes to the so-called "Reading Wars" between competing beliefs of how best to teach children to read.

11.01.2022 Yesterday, Jenny Baker worked with the team on the complex area of analytical essay writing.the main focus was on the analysis of different text types with the aim of understanding how an author constructs a text in order to achieve its designated purpose. We examined how to roll out an argument within the essay and how to provide students with a structured framework to place their argument into. Our word of the day was.....milieu!

08.01.2022 We love numbers nearly as much as we love letters....... particularly when they make such "neat" patterns. Oh, we love patterns too.....! Happy 10th October 2020......X

08.01.2022 Verity, Ildi and Annique have shared the wonderful opportunity of learning from Shaun Ziegenfusz over the past couple of weeks. In the first webinar, he covered the diagnostic process for Developmental Language Disorder and provided them with a host of valuable resources for both report writing and to provide to parents who have a child with the diagnosis of DLD. Last night, he talked about instances when a child has a Language Disorder in conjunction with another condition such as ASD or ID.... we will host a whole team sharing evening in a few weeks so that Verity, Ildi and Annique can pass Shaun’s pearls of wisdom onto the rest of us. Our next topic is how to diagnose DLD in children with English as a second language. That’s next week....!

08.01.2022 Here is our wonderful volunteer Agnes who has been colouring and cutting and laminating so many wonderful resources for all the children who come to the clinic. Today she brought all her completed resources in for us......her bookmarks have already been a huge hit....! We your work Agnes....and we you....X

05.01.2022 We wanted to showcase what can be achieved in just 4 two-hour sessions of intensive narrative writing instruction. Ildi ran a holiday group for year 4, 5 & 6 students who needed assistance with plot as well as sentence structure required to produce a successful narrative. We typed up one young man's "cold" (before) and "hot" (after) stories - and are delighted with the results - as was he!!!

03.01.2022 More fantastic content from Annie Unger from Rosanna Golf Links Primary School in Victoria. Annie discusses the intricacies of phonological awareness in such a clear and comprehensive manner - great for teacher development as well as parent information sessions. Thanks Annie.....!

01.01.2022 Preparing for a session on essay writing for Friday's "Sharing Successful Practice" Conference - the topic under investigation is GRAFFITI and while looking for facts, the following website emerged with some interesting "breakdowns" of graffiti styles - did you know there are eight different styles of graffiti....?

01.01.2022 Luke is another happy winner in our Dyslexia Awareness Colouring Competition. Here he is with his bag of winning goodies....well done Luke!!

01.01.2022 Some take-home points from this article by David Kilpatrick........ We cannot teach students every word in a spelling system. Typically developing students can teach themselves how to read and spell new words. ... Connections between a word's pronunciation and its letter sequence are made. Typically developing students require 1 4 exposures to remember a word. The ability to sound out an unfamiliar word forms the foundation of remembering words. Our orthographic memory is "logging" some kind of connection between that spoken word and that printed word so that on future encounters, it is easily recognised. The automatic process of remembering words is driven by automatic access to letter sounds combined with the automatic access to the phonemic structure of spoken words. Working on phonemic manipulation (divorced of graphemes) is vital for developing the phonemic muscle of students. Students must be able to flex their phonemic muscle in order to orthographically map new words.
