07.01.2022 I recently read a new novel for children from the UK's Andersen Press. It's a crime/thriller called JEFFERSON by Jean-Claude Mourlevat in which a hedgehog fights to clear his name when he's accused of murder. It's a delightfully quirky tale of animals and humans, of friendship and passion, cruelty and compassion. JEFFERSON takes its cues from hardboiled crime fiction and adds a huge slice of playful and inventive world building as the forest animals team together and see jus...tice restored. Young hedgehog Jefferson is both the accused and the investigator of a sudden and shocking murder. The pencil illustrations by Antoine Ronzon add atmosphere and texture to the reading, making JEFFERSON a book that stands out in a crowded market. The Anh Do's of the world needn't worry just yet about being knocked off their bestseller perch, but I would recommend this book for savvy readers aged 9 and up. Here's translator Roz Schwartz reading from the opening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJbuX1RucmE
