25.01.2022 A new state-wide environmental crime campaign by Crime Stoppers is being launched to address the ongoing issue of crimes having a devastating effect on our wate...rways. For the first time Crime Stoppers has collaborated with both Local Land Services (LLS) and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) on a dedicated campaign to address the illegal trading of certain plants catastrophic to our waterways. Plants like water hyacinth, frogbit and salvinia are illegal to trade and devastating to our environment. These plants grow at a rapid rate, block waterways, reduce water quality and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to control. They restrict livestock, birds and other native animals’ access to water, reduce food and shelter for fish and native animals and prevent native water plants from growing. But it doesn’t stop there. These water plants also put the economy and our community at risk. Boating, fishing and swimming will be a thing of the past if we don’t stop the growing and trading of plants which cause havoc in our waterways, said CEO NSW Crime Stoppers, Mr Peter Price AM. With spring fast approaching, the rapidly expanding online marketplace has become an emerging pathway for the prohibited trade of plants, and a biosecurity challenge. It is an offence just to have frogbit plants because of the devastating impact that species can have. So, we are appealing to the public for help. Community awareness and action will be crucial in stopping the prohibited trading of these plants. We are asking anyone who sees these plants being sold online to report it to NSW Crime Stoppers. added Mr Price. To make a real difference and protect our waterways, we need a whole of community approach. People are spending time online and this is where most illegal trading of these plants occurs’, said Mr Price. Local government authorities and the Nursery & Garden Industry NSW & ACT are also supporting the campaign. Penalties of up to $1.1 million or 3 years imprisonment are in place for individuals found to be selling these plants. If you see, know or suspect criminal activity, contact Crime Stoppers in complete confidence on 1800 333 000 or report online at https://nsw.crimestoppers.com. We don’t want to know who you are, we just want to know what you know. For more information about the three targeted weed species visit https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au See more
24.01.2022 EAST Fremantle’s mayor has labelled tree vandals as cowards after greenery on Riverside Road was deliberately damaged for the second time in four months. Six new trees were ruined on Wednesday last week, with the Town now forced to fork out more than $10,000 to replace them.
21.01.2022 Weeding - it's a pleasant way to spend time in the bush. On Saturday I had 3 nice surprises - the rainy weather held off, our group was gifted a set of flash weeding tools (thanks, Phil!) and there are orchids to spot. If you're in the park on Saturday afternoons, come and say hello!
20.01.2022 Project update: As you can see, many of the plants are surviving and thriving. We even have a sneak peak into what flowers will cover this site in the future. W...ant to say a huge thanks to all of those silent volunteers who have been fixing the tree guards over the last few months - this work is really appreciated as it will drastically increase the survival rate for all the seedlings. Thank you!! See more

09.01.2022 So you think APACE is just a native nursery ? Fact is, APACE offers a full suite of environmental and land-care services, from consultation through to landscape... design, site preparation, weed control, planting, post-planting maintenance, native seed collecting, provenance seed growing and a native nursery ! Our crew members have been flat out over the past few months at various sites for clients ranging from Local Government to friends off community groups and more. All of this work is seasonally driven, so as the planting season begins to wind down, we will start to focus on native seed collecting over the summer months. See more
06.01.2022 I was introduced to the wonderful Owl Friendly Margaret River group last night at the Margaret River Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Nature Conservation M...argaret River Region sundowner. Did you know that some of the most common pest-control baits you buy from Bunnings etc are lethal to our owls, possums and pets? Rats and mice can take days to die when they eat some anticoagulant baits. During that time, they’re slow, easy prey for predators who unfortunately are also killed by the bait. Look for baits with warfarin or coumatetralyl which will still kill the pests but keep our wildlife and pets safe! For more info check out owlfriendly.org.au.
